Argentina fears more massive protest and looting on anniversary of 2001 economy meltdown

Full article 96 comments

While facing the challenge of police unrest that has spread to half of the Argentine provinces the government of President Cristina Fernandez is designing a plan to counter the threat of further rioting and looting on 20 December, the anniversary of the worst day of the 2001 crisis which forced the resignation of then elected president Fernando de la Rúa and was followed by the largest sovereign debt default in Argentine history. Yes paying people early is the answer. Apparently answering their actual concerns won't work at all.

Does the government actually believe that paying people a couple of weeks early will actually achieve something? Especially as the value of their bonus drops everyday, to the point where they probably won't be able to buy that much?

But let's not address the real issues here. The lack of security. All those people with extra money in their pockets, wandering around the lawless streets of Argentine towns and cities, just looking for someone to mug them.

    What a stupid plan.

I was chatting with an Argentinean chap in New York on Sunday. He lives in NYC but his family are still in Argentina. After the usual niceties he quickly moved on to how frightened he was for his family and how dangerous it had become there. He noticed a marked change on his last visit home and how under-reported serious crime is. He explained how so many people there are hiding cash in their houses because they don't trust the banks and consequently they are then vulnerable to being robbed. (He said robbed and killed for their cash). He also described how his own family kept large amounts of cash in a hole under the bed until recently when they used it to buy a house, reasoning that when the peso devalues they will at least still have the bricks and mortar.

This conversation was entirely driven by the chap eager for people to know how serious the situation is there.

This entire event was quite shameful. If you asked anyone if this would happen four years ago, they would have looked at you as if you were crazy.

There was one casualty a few blocks away, and a lot of people showed up to their places of work early. Though they likely won't be conducting any business today. One of my friends had to work a shift while several stores around his place of business were being looted.

The Ks will try to blame the opposition, calling these attacks “premeditated”. The fact is these people developed a sense of entitlement, a need for confrontation, and they have developed the idea that the rule of law doesn't exist. The police ironically come from similar backgrounds.

I knew that Cristina wouldn't bode well through this year. How long before she leaves Argentina in a private plane against medical advice?

It is the small talk that is so telling when combined with the overall picture.

Here in Elqui province I meet a lot of Argies. I have noticed a big shift in their evaluation of their home country.

Just last Saturday I was in the Plaza at the public chess club with 2 of my kids when an Argie couple approached and asked if their girl could join in. Once we got her a game set up they started chatting with me. They were from Mendoza. I asked them how they found La Serena and they replied politely that it was nice and that they were impressed at how safe the city was. They elaborated that back home the crime and safety was a big problem and many public spaces were now unsafe. It used to be uncommon to hear such comments from provincial Argies.

When you put the real discontent of everyday Argies in to the wider picture of corrupt and incompetent political leadership, it is easy to see that there is turbulence ahead.

“I find it hilarious that our rgidiot regulars are always absent when bad stuff is reported.”

But this is good news for some of our trolls. The looting is a result of the police strike action, which is a result of the deterioration of public finances, which as a consequence has led to S&P down grading Mendoza's credit rating to “non investment grade”, which means less foreign investment ... which must be good right?

Or is it a case of evil, self-serving, Anglo S&P playing their part in the international coordinated effort to destroy Argieland?

I remember a similar scan in Delhi in 2001 when I was on my gap yaaaaar. Although there is was dog poo on your shoe. They had some kind of poo gun which they would fire at the end of your shoe just as you were crossing under the road. On the other side there was a kindly Indian chap who would point to your shoe and explain that the dogs in India really were very cunning and you mustn’t have noticed it whilst you were rushing. They would then quickly clean it off and charge you an extortionate rate. No pick-pocketing, just a charming little scam...

On the 30th anniversary of the return of democracy there are now 9 people dead in the midst of the sacking related disorder.

That is 9 Argies killed by Argies, deliberately, in events that revolve around stealing food and televisions.

    @40 Toby,
Events in England and France are irrelevant to what is happening today in Argentina.

I am pointing out to you that you frequently espouse the virtue of the economic measures that have contributed to the current economic problems of Argentina. The deteriorating financial situation has led to the police strike which in turn has allowed the looting to occur.

The situation was exacerbated by political brinkmanship when outside help was denied to Cordoba. Hence my “naive” assessment that this crisis is due to the combination of the economic scenario and political corruption and incompetence.

Even with my “paucity of perspicuous acumen” I can tell you that once this crisis abates, it will only be a reprieve. Any pay increase will be destroyed by inflation and the social/economic problems will remain.

But don't worry yourself about that and can we have some soothing music for these children cowering from the flying bullets Tucuman:

This civil unrest is a symptom of the disease of corruption, mismanagement and crass arrogance of the Argentine government.

Agreed, I was actually enjoying this persona. It was letting a little of his normal personality show through and not overshadowing it with his multiple mental health issues. The desire to hunker down and attempt to cut oneself off from reality is a natural reaction to being overwhelmed by events in your life.

Indeed his posts had become more informative under this persona than we had seen for a while. I hope this doesn't push back his grand unveiling of their master plan (he uses the plural to either denote his multiple personalities or because his login is the result of multiple users (how very common for many Argentine posters on here)).

I missed Dany's post earlier. Quite funny. Chilean pickpockets in BsAs reflects well on Chile and badly on Argentina. There is not enough lawlessness in Chile for them to operate freely so they moved to a more crime-ridden locale.

Doesn't reflect well on Dany either. He expects us to believe that he is extremely intelligent and has made himself rich and yet he moved to a country fill of Chilean pickpockets, Argentine looters and 25% inflation.

I guess Think is just sticking to Chilean articles at the moment. Salves his wounds to discuss a country that isn't falling apart.

Yes CabezaDura did at least debate. He did spit a bit of bile now and then but that is hardly surprising considering that is the norm for discourse in Argentina.

At least he would reply and partake. As you can see Nostrils has degenerated into a gibbering wreck who won't face reality and Think hardly appears other than when an article appears. Case in point to a new article on the civil unrest on this site.

@72 Yes, I want to hear the opinions of Argentines. It is rare indeed to actually get a debate going. The usual response is attack or divert.

Perhaps CabezaDura's cabeza wasn't as dura as he thought.

It can't be easy to live in a country where debate is twisted and used as a tool by the government to supress the truth. Perhaps he didn't truly realise how bad a name Argentineans are now gaining outside Argentina.

After a decade of Kirchnerism and La Campora shaping their society, is it any wonder that Argentineans are now not seen as the role model or 'superior' civil society of Latin America?

I am not sure. But he proved to be less duro that you would have thought.

    January!!!!

No, Nostrils is obviously keen to change but I don't think it is possible. He is a little too far gone…. like Kirchnerism.

It's not new he's used in the past.
I think his meds have run out and the pharmacies are still closed.

When you've denied reality for so long and it comes crashing into your psyche all at once it must be very hard to accept.
That's why Think, Marcos, Toby et al have all lost it.

    WHEN DEMOCRACY IS UNDER EXTORTION.
Unfortunatelly, there will always be some sectors of our society, who will use a legitimate claim like a pay raise, in order to extort the different governments.
Policemen know perfectly that although they have right to claim for a better salary, they can't do any strike, due they can't leave our citizens without protection.
What is going on in argentina since last sunday is no more than a despisable extortion, and i hope all provincial governments remove those people who started the strike, and accord among all the governors of the country, a deep and federal democratization of security forces. After 30 years of uninterrupted democracy, the democratization of those forces is a pendent debt, i know that it will be very difficult to do it, because most governors have always been too coward, and let security forces to get their own mony with illegal bussiness, however the last facts show that it's absolutly necesary carry on a federal democratization of our forces, otherwise, those people will continue extorting the different constitutional governments along the country.
If argentina could judge the criminals of the worst dictatorship from latin america, then nothing is impossible.
I wanted to go to plaza de mayo to celebrate the 30 aniversary of the recovery of our democracy, but i had to work, beside, when i heard that ten people died because of the protests, i felt too sad, and i didn't feel like celebrating anything. Anyway, a great man like president Raul Alfonsin will always have a special place in my memory, like Nestor Kirchner, and Cristina Fernandez de kirchner.

Then move back. No one is stopping you.

However it doesn't change the fact that Argentinean society is reaping its reward from a decade under Kirchnerism.

By all means head back and enjoy the reward with them.

    Canada won't miss you.
