Over a quarter of the Argentine population live in poverty conditions, with no formal job, poor quality education, dreadful housing and insufficient healthcare, according to the latest paper from the Buenos Aires Catholic University Social Debt Observatory. Read full article

Perhaps the RCC should show it’s caring side by opening the doors to the Vatican vaults and give The Poor all the gold, jewels and other assets they have for “The Good Of God”. Most of it given by the “poor” in the hopes of getting into “Heaven” when they croak.
But then the Holy See would be bust and “The Poor would still be with us”.

This sounds very good. More than 10 million argies in poverty. Not that they merit anything else. How will things be when it's 20 million? Just a tip, argies, don't ask the UK for aid. If we talk about statistics, we'll find relevant differences among the different indexes, in fact, uca says that poverty is 24,4%, cifra-cta says it's 20%, indec says it's 4,5%, beside there are also provincial indexes, so, you can choose the one that you preffer.
I don't have the necesssary academic knowledge to affirm whether indec's figures are reliable of false, but what i know is that private polls don't enough infrastructure as indec has, in order to create a reliable index. In my opinion, private polls shouldn't be taken either as the ones which tell the truth about argentina's situation.
If we debate about argentina's progress in the last ten years, it's not necesary to take the numbers of any statistics, because people's progress, and our pendent social debts can be seen in the streets. If argentina didn't have a deep social improvement, embasies would be still the solution for many people, as they used to be for many years, however there is not any massive inmigration of argentines to other countries. On the other hand, if argentina didn't have this progress, rouds wouldn't be full cars with people who go to spend their holidays in the crowed beaches from our coast, beside turistic bussiness men have good expectations for their enterprices every summer, anyway, at the same time, many of them increase the prices of the houses and appartments that people rent.
The other side of our reality, is that we still have a 34% of workers who don't have any social safe in their jobs, they just have the government's help, beside, there is also a number of people who live in very precarious conditions.
Poverty exists in most countries: the UK has more than 15 millons of people living in poverty. Would you believe Prince Charles navy retirement is only U$S 167.00 per week? Of course, he donate his retirement money to charity.

I some how doubt the poverty rates rates for the US and UK (and Australia) contain such tragic examples such as:
* 7.3% of the population are malnourished
* 10% of house do not have running water
* 30% of house are not connected to sewage network
* 37% of young adults have not finished high school
* 20% of young adults don't have a job or school
* 12% of children aged 5 to 17 are involved in some kind of job
* 125,000 households does not have access to the real value of the basic food basket.

Argentineans have the country they deserve. They run it, they vote their pathetic populist politicians with easy answers in to power and they are now reaping the rewards. Unlike Nostrils, I don't blame anyone but Argentineans for what they are experiencing.
I don't have to be glad that my government will do the same thing because we know that politicians are untrustworthy and we know that they neither sides knows all the answers or gets it right all the time. We don't accept leaders becoming multi millionaires while in power. We don't accept the removal of checks and balances because the government thinks their right to govern is greater than my right to have those checks and balances.
Australia and Argentina were once equally rich and developed as each other. Then Argentina chose the path of Peronism and has never gotten off. Now they are not even in the same league as us. That is not because we were lucky and they had external problems we didn't face but because we took the difficult path of reform and not the easy path of populism.
Until a leader stands before the Argentine people and tells them the truth that they are broke, that their system doesn't work, that there is no external enemy trying to keep them down, that the way they live and work has to change, that their past wealth and prosperity was the result of a different set of values.... until that happens, Argentineans are doomed to continually repeat their past mistakes and continue their downward slide.
Saying I have glee and am counterproductive because I hold a mirror up to these failings is nothing more than shooting the messenger.

You'd be better off giving up this failed experiment of democracy and go back to military rule. It is the only thing that will get you a better life over the next generation. Try to find someone like Pinochet to fix the Society and rout out corruption. It will take a generation or two but it will be worth it.

Troy.....I say this without any racism, but I think all the troll posters here that hate Anglos, Europeans, North Americans, except Mexicans are Amerindians or at least part. Funny though I met some Guarani's up north in Missiones and they hated on one group and I can tell you it was a group inside Argentina.

For every thread that people like Nostrils and Stevie comment on, I comment on three.

I have spent the majority of my adult life working, living and investing in Argentina. I understand how Argentina works (or doesn’t, rather) and I have the scar tissue to show for it.
What had the potential of being the most interesting English speaking discussion board regarding Argentina has apparently become a place where fanatics from both sides (pro/con Argentina) come to “duke it out”. Several of the commenters seem to have no other motivation when commenting on this board than insulting other commentators, which is an awfully bad place to start if you are want to learn something from interesting discussions.
Argentines who are lamenting the sorry state of their country – like I do – are mostly motivated by the enormous untapped potential and will often display a love/hate relationship with their fatherland. But still it is home, so when foreigners, with apparent shallow knowledge and dubious motivation, turns message boards like this one into a childish “my country is better than yours” competition, I head for the door. Others may opt to defend what really cannot be defended.
Any person with a mental age above 16 knows that you can’t compare Argentina with Western Europe, Australia or USA with regards to human development indices. So why even bother? Does it make yourself feel better when taking a crap on a clearly worse run country than your own? If so, doesn’t that say a whole lot about you?
