Meanwhile, old papers show Spanish frankness, and hypocrisy.

Catalans are not Spanish. They are Catalans. A distinct nationality with a distinct language that date back to the 10th century. And “Spain” originated in the 19th century. Spain is a thieving state that doesn't respect the UN Charter. Sovereignty comes from the people. Support Catalonia/Catalunya!

Apart from putting troops on the streets, how does Madrid think it can stop this process? Perhaps they will try restricting the border crossings, between Spain and Catalunya, like they do with Gib?

The irony is that by taking this attitude and trying to block this, Madrid is inflaming Catalan nationalism to the point where they will vote to leave Spain, something which they probably would not have done otherwise.

And Sr Margallo’s response is straight out of the Timmerman script:

    http://www.chronicle.gi/headlines_details.php?id=32279

Somehow I don’t think the Spanish/Argentinian view of “territorial integrity vs self-determination” is going to be accepted in the EU, to say the least.

    Viva Catalunya.

*2 were you born a shit head or did you learn to be one!!??
*4 Hey wonder boy!! don´t put all the catalans in the same bag!! There are Spanish Catalans and there are radical Catalans.

50 % of the Catalan Pariament have rejected the referendum.Besides the Spanish Constitution has the power to withdraw the regional Government from the Catalan Government just as Great Britain did with Northern Ireland if they break the law and thereis always the military and Spanish security forces to step in if things get out of hand just like Great Britain did with Northern Ireland. So for the Catalans is a lost cause......

    Sunny,
That is a not a correct analogy:
Northern Ireland was beset by terrorists and the population was quite happy to remain within the UK.
Whereas the Catslonians are not terrorists, merely civilian inhabitants wanting a referendum for Self-Determination.

Hmmm, Self-determination. I can think of a better analogy than yours LOL!!

It will all end in tears if he relies on anybody in the EU or the Heads Of State to help them.

Great Britain should openly support them,

Spain deserves all that it is about to receive,
and good riddens to bad rubbish.

    @6
The UK prorogued the NI government in 1972 because the Stormont administration had lost control and was giving the impression to the nationalist minority that the British Army were acting on the orders of a Unionist government. What the British never denied to the people of NI was the right to self-determination. Since 1921 the people of NI have had the right to leave the UK any time they wish. The Scots are having their referendum later this year. So yes, the UK should give its full support to the Catalan's right to self-determination. Whether the catalans choose to leave Spain or stay should be up to them and no-one else.

@13 Spanish Raindrop (you are not even two drops)

Cameron is just a lying coward who cannot face up to any reality, so you can have him if you want him and good riddance.

He has single-handedly destroyed any chance the Conservatives had to form a government of Conservatives, not a coalition of Conservatives and cunts.

    @ 13 aussie sunshine
Doesn’t really matter what the Spanish constitution or law says does it, what matters now is whether the EU supports Catalan self-determination, or Spanish territorial integrity?

And the EU will, without a shadow of doubt, support self-determination, just as it did in Kosovo, and in every other situation where the question arose.

Territorial integrity, as quoted by Spain and Argentina, is a fallacy, a fabrication completely without foundation.

Watch this space, whether Catalunya decides to leave Spain or not is the only question, whether they have the right to, is not in question.

Back on topic, we're talking about Spain and their only viable province, Catalonia.

It has nothing to do with Northern Ireland or Britain, except for their membership in the EU.

Catalonia is free to hold a Referendum of their own residents to leave Spain, if they wish to have Self-Determination.

You and Spain may not like it, but that's too bad. Spain can only try to stop them with force, if enticements don't work, and I can see the EU and the UN having an issue with that.

Your problem - nothing to do with us.
Go bleat to someone who cares.

*15 Don´t you read the newpapers??!!
The EU has said many many many times that a separate state will not be recognised...which in this case would be Catalonia and Scotland. Do read a little more!!

*16 Catalonia is NOT FREE TO HOLD A REFRENDUM as the Spanish Constitution does not allow it...therefore it cannot be held as it would be treason a series offence by where those who hold it will be held up before the legal courts.

...My opinion is that no state can, in any way lawfully get out of the Union, WITHOUT THE CONSENT OF THE OTHERS; and that is the duty of the President, and other government functionaries to run the machine as it is..

    Sunny,

It ain't 1860, and it ain't the USA.

I don't know who you are angry at, or who you are trying to convince.

It has nothing to do with Britain or the US.

The Argentine Constitution says that the Falklands belong to Argentina. We know that doesn't mean anything.
Perhaps Spain doesn't have a real democracy?

The people of Quebec can vote to leave. The people of Scotland can vote to leave.
    Why can't Catalonia?

I think you need to froth and flail at the EU, or perhaps the UN.

No point getting mad with us - it's Spain's problem.

If Spain tries to stop this with military force, perhaps there will be a civil war.
