The great English player David Beckham could come out of retirement and sign a short term deal for Argentine giants River Plate, reports Argentine website Diario Veloz. Read full article
Malvinas Secretariat announcement -
David Beckham has shown with his interest in Argentina's River Plate his support for our position on the Malvinas / Falkland Isles
@4 Like Maradona all sportsmen have a limit at the top of their game. At least Beckham does much for charity and promoting sport in our country. Maradona is all about himself. When Maradona was asked why he doesn't act as a role model for young people in Argentina he responded that he didn't want to be one. Nice.
Beckham would never leave his family for six months and there is no way his wife and children would live in Argentina. Just sayin'.
The Palacio Duhau would be more her style but as most of the designer labels have left BsAs I cannot see her going there. :)
Seriously, DB was on a chat show over here recently - can't remember which one - and he talked about his retirement and how much he was enjoying taking the children to school and spending time with them. As he put it, it was Victoria's time to shine. She would be the first to admit she couldn't sing but she has excelled in the fashion world.
Yes, i can't see Victoria making her way through the slums and taking her washing down to the river to beat it on a rock whilst David gets to kick a ball around a field.
David is a nice guy and a great football player, but I doubt he has any idea about the political furnace he would be walking into.
The policy raised by CFK was never official government policy. This was a discussion document produced by civil servants and diplomats. This would almost certainly have been rejected by the islanders. In 1965 the then Labour Foreign Secretary of State; Micheal Stewart made it absolutely clear in a statement to parliament that in any negotiation with Argentina the wishes of the islanders would be paramunt. This has remained government policy ever since.
The gvernment has made it clear also that the UK government has no doubts about British sovereignty over the islands. Therefore there can and will be no discussion over sovereignty until the islanders wish it.
the UK government spent 17 years in discussion with Argentina mainly because it was believed that by talking with Argentina there would be no invasion. Talking was believed to be cheaper than keeping sufficient armed forces in the area to deter any invasion attempt. This policy clearly failed.
The UK is therefore forced to defend the islands .
Given that Argentina sees talks as simply a discussion on how Britain will hand the islands over to Argentina, what is the point of any negotiations?
Beckham, if he has any sense at all, will not go anywhere near Argentina. As a British/English sport icon he will be vilified by la Cámpora and by the Malvinista mobs who would use his presence as another way of perpetuating the dishonest and shameful Argentine scheming to obtain sovereignty over the Falkland Islands.
@ Marcos Alejandro When are you going back to that shithole you left for a better life or are you still waiting for things to get better?? in that case probably going back in a box.
@19 LOL! Do you realise how racist, homophobic and murderous your post is? LOL! You make Argentines look bad.
DB makes fun of his reputation as ' a bit thick' but he is not stupid at all. He worked hard on the bid to get the Olympics in Britain and mixes regularly with politicians and royalty. He would not do anything to upset his country. Besides, he said he is too old to play football anymore and is enjoying his life as it is. He told a great little anecdote about having to step in to referee a match his son was playing in and having to award a penalty against his own son. Despite his son's tears he did the right thing.
Nah! Becks wouldn't stoop to playing there. He now has his house in London. After all, who would want to live for 6 months in Rgland? You want to live somewhere that has decent transport, great nightlife, top of the league in fashion for herself and where the lights don't keep going out. And not be buried in some BA hellhole. Anyway he is bound to be at the England matches in Brazil.
As many of the above posts make abundantly clear, Mr Beckham, who is indeed a charming, gifted and generous man, is retired. Your football club is safe and will remain a 'Bretard' free-zone.
Now if your really serious about living up to your blood-curdling moniker there are plenty of actual Pirates active in the South China Sea. Why don't you go and shake your fist at them?
What an extradinary bigoted outburst. There are plenty of Argentinian footballers playing here in England. No one minds in the least. They are treated by the fans and the press as just sportsmen. No one subjects them to your level of abuse. Many, Carlos Tevez for example are widely liked and admired. Their nationality just is not an issue at all.
Then again England is widely admired for its sense of tolorence and fairness. Not qualities readily associated with Argentina.
Well if they did go and by chance have another baby they could name it after one of the famous sites in BsAs: Favela 31?
Ha, ha, ha.
But if he did go he would have the fans eating out of his hands, no doubt about that. Charismatic guy, pity about Posh, has anyone EVER seen her smile?
Well yes, football is an expensive business. When Real Madrid paid Manchester United $150 million for Christian Ronaldo, they made their money back in 3 years just by selling Ronaldo T-shirts.
@33 Except the good players don't stay in Argentina. They go and make their fortunes abroad. The football matches I attended in BsAs were not good quality compared to the Premiership matches I have attended. (No disrespect but they are worlds apart in standard).
@30 Search youtube for Posh and Becks being interviewed by Ali G for a charity event. It is quite old now but you will see plenty of smiles from both of them as they are ribbed mercilessly. That they can laugh at themselves warmed me to them.
Both have amazing agents and business sense, that is for sure.
@37 Sure, disagree :) LOL! They were different, the football in Argentina was like school boy football over here, everyone wanted to hog the ball and no defence. It bored me rigid. On the other hand the fans were outstandingly entertaining.
@39 Yes, I should have been more specific. I am at home in England at the moment. Probably here for another month or so before heading back to South America. No disrespect but I was completely disappointed by the football in Argentina as a comparison to European football.
I'm afraid most decent Argentinian players are playing in Europe. The English Premiership is not called the league of nations for nothing. Virtually the entire Argentinian squad is playing in Europe. Well you can't blame people. A man has to earn a living.
Football is also very local in England. People tend to support the local side, even if they will never win any cups.. The average attendance for the championship (the second division) is 17,000. In Italy its only 4,000. Italians only support a football team if they have a chance of winning. This means that even clubs in the second or third division have money for overseas players. The standard therefore is pretty high even for lower division clubs.
I note that our Rugby correspondent Paul Cedron has not contributed to this thread, but on another he has tried to bring in the names of Ronan O'Gara and O'Driscoll in his arguments. Both I think played for the British and Irish Lions touring team.
Rugby in Ireland has always been ALL Ireland, and Felipe Contepomi was a star of the Leinster team
Shame on you Paul,Rugby isn't about politics
Having said that, if you had someone like Pichot who lead your national side so well in the World Cup as president, Argentina would be a better place.

That stunning free kick goal in the dying seconds against Greece; magical. That penalty against Argentina in June 2002 in Japan; sweet revenge.
River Plate should be so lucky. Be a nice change to have a global icon playing for them instead of who?
By the way, how many of the Argentine national team are actually playing in Argentina?
Even little Crystal Palace have an Argentine goal keeper, Julian Speroni, and very popular he is too amonsgt the fans.
I guess Posh will have to get used to shopping in Recoleta. Spending 6 months at the Alvear Palace Hotel should be bearable enough.
