The detrimental effect that border delays have had on tourism and visitor numbers to Gibraltar has been the subject of recent questions in the House of Commons. In a written question tabled before the lower House, Conservative MP Andrew Rosindell requested information from the Secretary of State regarding the effect that the border delays have had over the last four months. The simple solution is to impose a £120 tax on flights from the UK to Spain and use the money to compensate Gibraltar. Should that keep some 100,000 British tourists from visiting Spain, the UK has assisted Spain with its unemployment problem.

@1 Actually, when the UK leaves the EU, the British will open fire. The people of Gibraltar will be able to sink spanish watercraft and shoot down spanish aircraft at will. Artificial reefs at low cost. When you're keen on marine environmentalism, what better than to sink a spanish poaching boat? Law enforcement? Blow a guardia civil thug boat to smithereens. Explode the Algeciras oil terminal. When Gibraltar has its developed air and sea links to Morocco. Air is straightforward. Proper sea links should consist of hi-speed catamaran ferries. Various parts of Andalucia may well ask for Gibraltar protection. That's to say, British protection. Perhaps Britain could free the whole area from Cadiz to Malaga from an undemocratic tyranny. Didn't Britain conquer Spain when it was occupied by the French? Why shouldn't Britain conquer a criminal, undemocratic, dictatorial, tyrannical Spain? Bet the local Spanish, except for the smugglers and poachers, would love watching the Guardia Civil and National Police thugs being shot down in the streets. Crowds on the Avenue de Espana to watch GC vessels sinking. Congregations to watch the spanish air farce being shot out of the sky. Warnings to spanish commercial aircraft. “Your starboard wing is in Gibraltar air space and is about to be shot off. Please try to crash into the Bay of Gibraltar. Alternatively, we can try to give you co-ordinates for the Algeciras oil terminal or local administration buildings”.
It might interest you to learn that the Campo de Gibraltar (in Spain) benefits greatly for its association with Gibraltar. You might like to consider that Spain is an economic disaster area and Gibraltar is still booming. But why not take advice from an argie economic expert that can point to all the argie economic successes?
@2 But it's far easier to impose a £200 entry tax on spanish nationals trying to enter any British territory. Maybe another £200 exit tax?

Don, much as you'd like to believe it Spains survival does not depend on GB.
There are many many tourists from many many other countries.
All rooms will be filled. Every time.
Germans and Russians especially being the new version of British sun seekers.
Theres nothing Britain can do in this situation through economics without shooting itself in the foot.
First theres EU law, then international trade laws and organizations, following that there'd be Spains ripostes both subtle and overt.

( btw how will those airlines with now half empty planes survive)

Spain will duplicate and return any favor.

Until the Gibraltarians face up to the historic context by which their little bunker was achieved, and start making sensible compromises they'll always feel the negative effects of Spains unavoidable influence on key issues in their daily lives.

    What do they really expect.
What could unwelcome Spaniards living in an enclave off Cornwall, achieved through war expect.

(let me guess. diplomatic respect and peace and love and flowers etc etc)

this is why i enjoy watching programmes about the dregs of our society going on holiday to the cesspit spanish resort , urinating and vomiting in the street while the spanards have to grin and bear it to get our money to pay their impoverished population ..so sweet

    @ 4 Vestige

you obviously know very little about the Spanish economy.

27 percent unemployed. Losing the huge influx of foreign currency from all the British tourists will bring it to more than 32 and the feeble upturn will die.

“how will those airlines with now half empty planes survive”

How “half empty planes”? are you under the impression that an airplane can only fly on one single predestined route? that a plane which has flown to Spain cannot fly to Portugal, Morocco, cheap Greece, Italy, Turkey, ...?

“Spain will duplicate and return any favor.” yes, thank you very much! the great majority of “Spanish tourists” to Britain go there to work there.

“the historic context by which their little bunker was achieved” Simple. British 1 Spanish 0.
Has happened time and again. Who should own Elsass/Lothringen/Alsace/Lorraine? ... stop sobbing over the realities of the world.

“What could unwelcome Spaniards living in an enclave off Cornwall, achieved through war expect.”
Cornwall? - you mean Morrocco, don't you? like Ceuta and Melilla. They seem to be doing just fine.

Don unaware of the concept of flight slots. And tourists form other countries.

    8) yet hasn't - wonder why after so long. either no balls or can't.

El Gran Don Alberto is well aware of flight slots, after having waited umpteen times for the next free slot after a few minutes delay.

The slots released in Britain can be used to fly elsewhere. Lots of airports in southern Europe, Turkey, North Africa have free slots and better weather than Spain. All it takes is planning and the UK government showing some guts.

Yes Don, try telling the average Briton they're going to norf-Africa.

Will it be Libya or Egypt or Tunisia or Algeria they're flying too while passing over Spanish airspace ?

Hope these new landing slots can be organized for 6 months time, along with the building of European/Spanish class accommodation for the now hugely increased demand (unplumbed shack...2000 euro per week), tourism infrastructure, terminals with capacity, car rentals, public transport, and so on. The Moroccans will be thrilled to gamble on that politically motivated investment.

What time do the bars and in these Muslim counties open til ?
Nothing better than a few cool ones on a deck chair, a nice glass of wine in a restaurant, thats what holidays are all about for an infidel.

Will there be pool parties there too ??
More importantly will there be toilet paper ??

Getting one over on Spain because of a queue thats annoying some people on a rock country/colony/territory thing that most reasonable Brits know probably shouldn't even be there and is kind of taking the piss is likely to clear Ibiza and Barcelona this summer.
Of both British tourists and their Dutch, German, Irish, Russian, American etc counterparts.

    @ 12 Vestige

it is so childish to ignore Portugal, Morrocco, cheap Greece, Italy, Turkey, ... to further your lost cause.

Obviously, you also know nothing about the segregated tourist areas in muslim countries. I have worked in 24 countries and have been to a pool party with gallons of alcohol even in Jeddah in Saudi.

    What is Arrak? Raki?

Gibraltar survived and prospered for 16 years with its border to Spain closed.

It has a higher living standard, higher growth and lower unemployment than Spain. Would this change if the border closed permanently?

One thing is guaranteed, Spain will be even further away from its goal.

We all know that if the border between Spain and Gibraltar closes Gibraltar will still have high productivity and full employment where as Spain will suffer it is why there are as many Spanish protesting about the current procedures as there are Gibraltarians.

There is excess accommodation all around the Mediterranean as the Southern European countries have suffered a long recession which has dented their domestic markets as well as reduced foreign tourists. Spain itself has a huge problem with both excess tourist AND residential accommodation. Empty properties and half built hotels litter the coastal areas.

Spain does not have a strong hand. It desperately needs the EU and at the same time the EU is desperately trying to keep the UK onside to prevent it leaving Germany as the only major net contributor to the budget at a time when the other big economies (Spain, Italy) are on the slide.

aide says Gib is ‘a smokescreen’ for Spain

The Spanish government uses the Gibraltar issue as a smokescreen to distract public attention from austerity measures and turbulent internal politics, a former adviser to the late Margaret Thatcher has said.
    http://www.chronicle.gi/headlines_details.php?id=32497

says it all, does it not.
