Mercosur/EU with their own problems still don't have a date to continue negotiations

Friday, January 24th 2014 - 03:35 UTC
Full article 80 comments

Mercosur and the European Union continue to work on their tariff reduction proposals list but have no scheduled date for negotiators to meet and advance on a long delayed trade agreement according to Uruguayan diplomatic sources. However what is certain is that when the date is agreed it will be clear if Mercosur consensus proposal will include all founding members of the group. Read full article

    This will happen.

Argentina might not be included but Uruguay, Paraguay and Brazil will sign a deal. It's inevitable.

The Pacific Alliance members each have their own EU trade deals and are doing much better economically than every Mercosur member.

    I know Troy.

Two Mercosur countries have an unofficial market exchange rate but in Pacific Alliance members do.

Do you know what the tanking exchange rate will do to inflation? It will skyrocket.

    Will be interesting for sure.

umm... No. The article has the title of
Mercosur/EU with their own problems still don't have a date to continue negotiations - “Mercosur and the European Union continue to work on their tariff reduction proposals list but have no scheduled date for negotiators to meet and advance on a long delayed trade agreement according to Uruguayan diplomatic sources. However what is certain is that when the date is agreed it will be clear if Mercosur consensus proposal will include all founding members of the group.”

Argentina may be left out of the discussions, or put on a second-tier arrangement. That is the totality of the article, apart from a few weak excuses from Blanco.. and that Almagro is making alliances that do not include TMBOA and has gone directly to speak with Brazil about the future of LatAm.....
    Next!

Mercosur use to have only one anchor dragging them behind, but since the illegal incorporation of Venezuela, that number has doubled.

Saying that, Uruguay isn't doing much better in terms of trade. add that, coupled with Argentinas continued attempts to hinder them in all areas of progression, then this trade deal will continue to rot.

The sensible countries should leave Mercosur while they can.

@11 I agree with your statement, Paraguay is the most democratic of the lot. they actually know the meaning of relations and honesty.

Brazil should be the forerunner, however they need to change there government, and follow the paths of the P.A.

Uruguay is starting to turn into a lost cause, lets just hope there up coming elections will prove more fruitful. In truth, they should cut ties with Argentina, they are doing them no favours.

Venezuela and Argentina are lost causes. Both have the potential to become major power-houses in global economics, but there current system of management has done way too much damage for there own good, corruption is the norm. It will take generations to sort those messes out.

Something that commentators seem to ignore is a strange reality. Many EU members object to the negotiations with mercosur. But suppose, just suppose, the negotiations are “successful”. On the one hand, there are likely to be conditions that the EU will impose that the people of the mercosur member countries don't know about yet. A few minutes research will show the “conditions” that the EU has imposed on others with which it has trade agreements. These have included both domestic and international matters. For example, the EU has successfully demanded changes in foreign policies, in democratic and judicial processes, in “transparency”, in policies on narcotics, on corruption. The trading “partner” doesn't comply and it doesn't get access to the EU market. And that access can be cut off within hours. But there's another factor that the EU doesn't even try to take into account. It's known as “the people”.

In the EU, many goods have to have proper labels indicating the country of origin. And what comes next is called “consumer choice”. It might be that, in Britain, many people will decide not to buy meat originating in argieland. New Zealand experienced a similar difficulty when UK consumers found that New Zealand lamb was slaughtered under a halal regime. Many Brits didn't like that. Consumption dropped. Imports dropped off. Welsh lamb is better anyway. The politics of consumerism! The customer is always right!

    Jan 24th, 2014 - 03:05 pm - Link - Report abuse 0
  • Narine T. Nüster

Sadly, the British consumer must demand “conditions” from the rest of the world in terms of “quality” products, because they no longer produce anything themselves. They are merely a financial services economy that booms and busts on the waves of the latest pecuniary scheme or Ponzi.

Thus, while they demand, at the end of the day they don't have much choice on the cars they drive, the wines they drink, the tomatoes they eat, or the televisions they purchase, as none of that is made in the UK.

In Europe we are already on candid camera or microphone no matter where we are. The government does not need to physically seek us, we have already surrendered our freedom of privacy to them. One of the things I find so unenlightened about our glorious EUian republics.

I know Solymar, trapped as it is between the IB and the coast. Great beaches but the housing is a mishmash of medium and trash and not really worth bothering if you want your money back for the remaining partner OR insulation from the noise.

We played croquet there two years ago at the court built especially for croquet by a member of the British Embassy. Hell of a lot of racing traffic along the coast road and the ANCAP fuel station is built between the two lanes of it, smashes waiting to happen.

No, we dropped that from the list back in 2010.

@47 Fortunately, there are massive areas in Britain where there are NO cameras and NO microphones. They are only really installed where there are foreigners. It seems that there will soon be a need to install more surveillance equipment to catch the Scottish foreigners. Indeed, I have become so concerned about the potential influx of these barbarians that I have installed HD DVRs in my car and CCTV around my house. I am working on a lapel HD DVR. Everywhere I am, everywhere I go, whatever I do, it will all be videoed (sight and sound) and recorded.

So any form of private enterprise is now capitalism...

I think one form for socialism talks about breathing.

    Ergo, if you breathe...

Socialism is by definition an alternative to capitalism, a non defined approach to deal with the problems capitalism leaves behind.

Nationalising aspects of common interest is a common trait of the different attempts on socialism.

Communism would be the other extreme, where all is owned by all.

With every ideology, a different grade of responsability is recquired.

    “There are no multilingual Brits.”

That sums up the creditability of all your posts.

I am new to this topic. But it seems to me, based on the last couple of articles on this subject, that 1. There isn't a set agreement on when EU/MERCOSUR will meet & 2. There are delays being caused by individual countries worrying and dealing with their own problems which seem to be more important.

It looks like immediate problems in the countries need to be looked at before entering into anything with EU. Considering that, apparently, EU will be enforcing certain conditions that will be imposed if an agreement is successful. Also, it doesn't seem that all the countries in MERCOSUR are in agreement with what is best for everyone?

Note: I am beginning to look into latin america (specifically Uruguay and Argentina) for a class at my university. I appreciate all constructive criticism and all points of views as I think they will help me better understand the current events. Thanks!

Argentina is currently the most protectionist country in the region, followed by Brazil. The reason is simple, they have a massive market they don't want to offer to foreign countries without sacrifying the domestic workforce.
The intention is to create a domestic production that ensures jobs for all and a prosperous future.
In Europes case, you have mainly the French worrying that an FTA with SA will affect their domestic agriculural production, as this would be the main goods SA would have to offer.
Uruguay and Paraguay are always ready for a deal, as diversifying trade is crucial for countries of that size.
In Uruguay, people are sick and tired of the domino effect every time the bog ones falter. When Argentina sneezes, Uruguay catches a cold...

    This is an interesting thread.
Posts @ 75 and 76 appear to be a classic “Dog & Pony Show”

I would be very surprised if “Andrea” were not a creation ( sock puppet) of “Stevie's ” who is the Sock puppet creation of El Thinko, maybe.

This is a great dramatic device for an “open-minded innocent” to spoon feed questions to the Sage, “Stevie”, who gives his helpful view of world politics and related economics.

I for one, am not buyin' it, Stevie
