But they are as close a(s) Sao Paulo, Santiago, Asuncion, La Paz, and much closer than Lima, Bogotá, Caracas, Quito, Rio do Janeiro, Brasilia, Havana o(r) any other capital city of our first circle of interest”.

No mention of BA ... obviously not in their 'first circle of interest ''

Okay you sad Malvinistas and Trolls, let the character assignation of Jaime Trobo begin.

There are two links with Montevideo that I truly hope to see in the near future. One within a year or two but the other will take longer. The air link is the first obvious thing we need to get in place.

It’s only “No money Pepe”, his harridan wife and the rest of the bastard Tupamaros who are in awe of the argies.

ALL the people I have spoken with are either ambivalent or detest them. Not surprising given that most who visit Uruguay really are argies, the arrogant bastards.

I also know two Argentines who live here, one for 15 years and the other for 5 years having spent 17 years in Spain and both are good people as is my next door neighbour and his family.

The real problem is that Uruguay does not make anything that the people of the Falklands would probably be interested in buying due to the shoddy workmanship. Agricultural interchange perhaps but not much else.

The young women are very attractive though and would bring a new set of DNA into the Falklands but as to the weather after Uruguay, brrr!

Jeez! Did lazy MercoPress just feed Jaime's words through Google Translate and then nip out to the nearest bar?
    Shoddy piece of journalism.

After a couple of aspirin I can divulge that this guy is actually talking sense, which is nice to see.

@2 - Any minute now... I wonder what Think we bring up to discredit Trobo's opinion. I bet it has something to do with his trip and FIG's invitation.... funny how every supporter of the Falkland Islanders has some kind of duplicitous interest, while every Argentine supporter in an angel sent from heaven with only the interests on human kind at heart (while suppressing the islanders birthright and human rights).

The final paragraph included the line:
“...think that with an intelligent analysis...”
“THINK” and “Intelligent Analysis” seem such an unlikely couple.

How many of the Trolls on here have actually visited the Falklands?

    @5

Argentina's government suppresses the Falklands, but your government (London), and the rest of the world suppress Argentina.

And you stay quiet. So the duplicity accusation is warranted. As for the rest, I have no problems with the Falklands building relations with anyone else in the world. Just as long as there are no negotiations between you and us over Fishing, exploration, culture, or anything else, you should and can (de facto) do as you wish.

Of course I also am against Argentina's sickly claim, but that's just me.

    @6

Why would any Argentine go to the Falklands? There are no relations between the two countries or the two peoples, and I hope it remains so. If you take that out, then what for? There are bigger English speaking towns in Argentina ITSELF, might as well visit them and not need a passport.

    @10

Argentina has nothing to discuss with the Islanders (or Mercosur) that is of our interest in discussing. We have all that we need from both: good trading terms, and we control all waters and fishing outside the Falklands Economic Zone.

    Nothing thus to negotiate.

    @11

London has had ambitions on Argentina for 200 years.

And how about the EU ADMITTING they are trying to BUY THE UKRAINE to join the west? 11 billion bribe in fact? And I thought you said the West was not imperialist.

What is happening is that Kirchner is coming to an end of her sorry and destructive reign, its going to be very messy indeed and Argentina will be in the shit for years to come as a result.

A small country like Uruguay with convenient ports both air and sea are likely to be highly desirable assets to the Falklands oil industry, this has without doubt not gone unnoticed in Uruguay's opposition. As Argentina steams to ahead to economic catastrophe, Uruguay will be looking out to sea more and more.

You've tried to bully Chile too, but they've got the geography and armed forces to keep you out. And as for the UK, you were pro-Nazi during WW2 and sneakily attacked the Falklands in 1982.
Friendly relations have long hence been forgotten - by Argentina.

Let's see... continuing their imperialist expansion in Antarctica for starters. Not making ONE single attempt to talk to Argentina (when was the last time a UK official agreed to talk with Argentina on something we were interested in, aside the non-starter Falkland sovereignty). Not once.

You undermines behind the scenes at all meetings and forums, recently you have attacked us publicly at G20 and other summits.

Whereas Argentina's expansion and quasi imperialistic utterances over the Antarctic continent and the surrounding seas and islands are not ?

We refute the blatant lies coming from your government about militarising the S.Atlantic.
We have attacked you? ....in what way ? By requesting that you stick to agreements made.

The UK is not Argentina's enemy. Yours possibly, but we are sympathetic towards the mentally afflicted. If we had been your real enemy, we could have totally stuffed you after the Falklands victory and you probably would not have been alive to carp and whine.
It seems that there are plenty of Argentineans in London who disagree with you.
Keep up the hate campaign, it's all you have left to make you feel important.
Everybody is out of step but YOU....self righteous numpty.

The UK has no capability of attacking the entirety of Argentina, much less invading. Too much territory to cover and bomb. Don't feel yourself so important.

@12 et al. Still funny, I see. If most of the world is anti-argie, whose fault is that? Maybe it has something to do with how argieland acts? Genocide, trespass, attempted theft, mendacity, invasion, occupation, war, fraud, debt evasion, more mendacity.
The Crimea? Will there be lots of international observers? Not one from the Russian “sphere”?
Almost all the petrol in Europe is Russian, is it? Wonder what we're paying the Middle East and North Africa for? Not to worry, we'll move up and take Scotland's. Salmond reckons he's got plenty. But we'll have pumped it all out in a couple of years.
Now I begin to understand. You're as pissed as a newt.
Yep. Surrounded. But you want to be isolated. You've said so frequently. We're only doing what you want. We just want to watch you die. First there'll be starvation. Then you'll turn on each other.
Ah yes. Antarctica. An area that Britain quite legally claimed in 1908. Since it had mounted innumerable expeditions and saw great opportunities for scientific research. An area that argieland had to be GIVEN its first base in. By the British. And then, thinking that Britain would lose WW2, argieland waited until 1942 to make a claim. What a shame for you that we won, eh? So, if I understand you correctly, it's okay for you to skulk around in the undergrowth, creeping up behind and stabbing us in the back. But when we respond that is somehow wrong. Let's make something clear to you. What happened in 1806/7 had nothing to do with you. Even in 1982, you attacked us. But if we really want to, we can take you out with little difficulty. We're not interested in what you call “imperialist expansion”. But we will defend what is ours. And then we can move on to remove a cancerous growth. Cutting it out and burning it to ash. Then we can “disperse” the ash in up to 3 oceans. But always remember that, no matter what happens, you will have brought it on yourselves. I just hope that the few sane intelligent Argentines get out.

“An area that Britain quite legally claimed in 1908.”

Actually, Conqueror, the UK did not make any territorial claims in Antarctica in 1908. The 1908 Letter Patent was to make provision for the government of territories that had been claimed in previous years. The 1917 Letter Patent did make new territorial claims as it extended the claim on the Antarctic continent from Graham Land (Antarctic Peninsula) to a sector stretching down to the South Pole.

“Uruguayan businessman Samuel Lafone helped introduce cattle to the Falklands”

    Wrong.

Lafone did not introduce cattle to the Falklands -instead ripped off the Falkland Islands and decimated the great wild cattle herds that developed from the cattle introduced in the 1760s-if you read history, Lafone ripped off the Falkland Islands. He promised to give meat to Stanley and didn't and paid less than he should for Lafonia.

Usefully I believe some of the South American workers he sent stayed in the Islands thus destroying the myth that the Islands are made up only of implanted British citizens.

One of the greatest early disasters was the virtual wiping out of these herds.

How can an isolationist have self-grandeur? By his very nature he acknowledges that with his country withdrawn from the whole rest of the world, the rest of the world would go on unimpeded.

That I know very well, the isolationism is for our benefit, getting rid of relationships with all your tawdry nations. To the rest of you its business as usual.

You sound like the revolutionaires in the Life of Brian. ”And what have the Romans (British) ever done for us?”

Well lets see, the British invented or discovered extemely important things, such as (in no particular order):

    Vaccines
    Antiseptics
    Antibiotics
    Anaesthetics
    Internal combustion engine
    Steam Engines and trains
Industry (the Industrial Revolution: Spinning Jenny, Spinning Mule etc)

Modern Olympics (have the roots in the UK)
    VTOL engines
    Seat belts
    Fire engines
    Traffic lights

I could go on and on and on, but you get the picture.

In fact, the world owes a lot to the British.

    The Spanish invented:

    Sherry
    Transporter bridges
    Stamped paper
    Molotov cocktails

    And Argentine inventions...

    Er...well...er...
