I hae no issue in accepting any enemy of he USA, that is not the problem.

The problem is that these people haven't been presented for a judge and now they face 2 years minimum in a country they never asked to go to.

Being a US jailor is sickening...

Uruguay won't be a 'U.S. jailer'. They will be free and resettled in Uruguay for a minimum two years. Just like what has occurred in El Salvador, Switzerland and Albania.

Under no circumstances would they be prisoners in Uruguay, even if the Blancos or Colorados were in power.

Uruguay has a long and proud history of granting asylum to refugees. This includes European Jews before and during WW2, anti-Peronists and Peronists in the 1950s, even a Brazilian president and many, many others. The only group that was refused asylum were Nazis after WW2 (unlike you-know-who).
Mujica has taken a traditional Uruguayan stance over this, good for him.

Being forced to a country against your will and not being allowed to leave it, is to have your freedom taken away from you.

This people haven't been put in front of a judge.

I have no issues in giving them asylum, should that be their wish, but I don't think anybody asked them.

We are talkin about people that have had their freedom taken away based on Bush Jr taking the pill or not and now Uruguay serves as a US jailor to save Obamas face.

    Lep
I have no problem with muslims whatsover. Uruguay is a secular nation and all religions are allowed. According to me, you lot are the aggressors against the muslims in your war for resources.

Well they cant go back to their country of orgin because they will be killed either because they are wanted or guilt by association.
Gitmo has been a disaster with either low level or completely innocent people ending up there and one of the few serious terrorists actually released to continue to murder. so worst of all possible outcomes.

Really?? Under what jurisdiction you want them to be judged ??
If they were such nice people and innocent folk how come nobody wanted them as refugees and keep an eye on them?? Not even in the Middle East?

The reality is the Americans have reasons to keep this people in custody and take information out of them. That is a fact. Now what can we actually do to make their stay more comfortable is send them to Uruguay.

Sounds like Uruguay is playing with fire integrating terrorists and their relatives into Uruguay society. Without merit, USA says they are harmless , but that's because they want to give their problems to someone other than the USA society, which wouldn't accept them. aka “not in my backyard” . Mujica should reconsider and let other countries take their chances with the unknown. Don't sell out Uruguay for this particular political “favor”, you may see future human rights issues redefined and cost Uruguay more than you thought. History repeats itself.

“The problem is that these people haven't been presented for a judge and now they face 2 years minimum”

They wouldn't be going as prisoners to serve a 2 year sentence. They'd be going as refugees. I suspect the 2 years simply means that after 2 years their refugee status would be reviewed

“in a country they never asked to go to.”

As refugees presumably they can't return to their home countries and can go only to countries that are willing to accept them. If the countries that have said they are willing to accept them have each placed a limit on how many, then a way has to be found to distribute them among those countries. That will mean many going to countries that are not their first choices.

“I have no issues in giving them asylum, should that be their wish, but I don't think anybody asked them.”

Whether they are going as refugees, temporary immigrants, or permanent immigrants, they still need the consent of the host countries.

“If that people has committed any crime, bring them in front of a judge.
If they haven't, they should be released.

It's not that hard to grasp...”

    You miss the point.

Of course they should be released. But released where? They can only be released to countries where they are citizens, or if it's not safe for them to go home, to countries that are willing to accept them.

And there we have it, ”No Money Pepe” is so desperate for money we are going to be saddled with some Islamist extremists and the bill MAY be heavy, but not to the Yanks but the ordinary Uruguayos.

I was very near the London bombings that were done by Islam extremists of British Nationality! These deluded prats of Islam didn’t care who they murdered and for what? They claim it was because the Brits were abusing and killing Moslems, which we were, and the more Moslems we kill in the field the better as far as I am concerned. As far as I am aware ALL these people were found in the battlefields. If they are innocent WHY were they there?

But, you see “Free energy” Stevie, it is not “we” (you) that will be at risk from random bombings, is it? It will be US, the people in Uruguay and I hope, if the day ever comes that Pepe and his harridan wife will be among the innocent, because HE will be the guilty party and WE (in Uruguay) won’t need to put him on trial, we already know where the blame lies if this poorly thought out action goes ahead.

Stevie @15 : so for YOU it's a problem “”If that people has committed any crime, bring them in front of a judge. If they haven't, they should be released“””....
The notion that the terrorists locked up in Gitmo could be poor innocent victims, captured randomly by the US military, just because they were in the wrong place at the wrong time, is a load of BS.
I think the best solution would be to have them tried in a US Military Court, declared guilty and then shot. The US could dismantle Gitmo and the terroriste would be dead. Problem solved.

At least then they would have had the chance to go to trial. The cornerstone of every democratic, modern society's legal system is 'innocent until proven guilty'. Doing otherwise just questions its integrity. Exporting them questions it even further.

@48, I agree ON PRINCIPLE, that the right to defence is the cornerstone of a modern democracy's legal system....but sometimes , the perpetrators of heinous crimes, or acts of terror, when caught in the act - in my opinion - do not need to be tried...just executed.....radical ?? maybe, but I believe in an eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth....no courtroom shows or legal technicalities to allow mass murderers to get away with it...
Just one question : had the 9-11 terrorists parachuted out of the two planes before impact - presuming it were possible - and captured upon landing, do you believe they should have had the right to a trial ?? I think not....they should have been be interrogated (for obvious reasons) and then executed. And, that is the kind of justice they would be able to expect if they had done their vile deed in their own country.
As far as I'm concerned, the 'right' to a trial is just a 'relative' concept...

I'm not sticking up for any terrorist scum but I don't know why the rules / system should be different. Nazi criminals were tried in an era of no satellite, Internet, phone tracking and other similar technology to aid the prosecution. Surely now it must be easier than then. Richard Reid, the shoe bomber and terrorist dick, was tried in court. What is the difference between him and the others? And where do you draw the line to say what crimes don't need a trial? I just think it could a slippery slope

#47 You don know no-ting Jack - in your opinion, terrorists “do not need to be tried...just executed.....radical” ahhh no, ignorant and illegal.

Why not get rid of courts and simply allow international lynch mob justice? No evidence needed. No need to face your accuser. Imagine the savings not having to feed and house those freaking Muslims!

Who defines what a terrorist is? What if YOU or someone in your family is accused of being a terrorist?

If you live in the United States, citizen or not, you can be picked up by a Homeland Security Ford Excursion, thrown into a prison, held indefinitely without any charges, no lawyer, no phone call, you can be tortured, and you can be murdered!

Obama signed the NDAA Bill December 31, 2011 which legalizes just that.
Who IS a terrorist? Likely You are Jack! According to the Department of Homeland Security and FBI, qualifications of a terrorist in the United States include:

Gun owners, limited government conservatives, libertarians and Christians. You are a suspected terrorist if you pay with cash instead of a credit card, are concerned about NSA spying or privacy, complain about tap water. Terrorists are familiar with GMOs and dare to believe they should be labeled or shouldn’t be consumed.

The right to a fair trial is based on natural law which is the foundation of the U.S. Constitution. When you put a criminal government in charge and give that Government the power to kill “terrorists” without due process, you give them the power to kill you.

I agree that the USA has taken powers greatly in excess of those of a civilised nation and, to some extent, it has gone beyond and way beyond its own Constitution, but if you think that Obama is excessive, the Republicans might be much, much worse.

But I don't think that this justifies in argument the Russians sweeping in and taking over part of a sovereign country; the USA stopped doing that when it took over much of Mexico in their Southern wars of annexation in the 1840s.

But now, in today's globalised world, we know better and have highly integrated economies.

In the first instance (above) , the USA may say “this is NOT what we voted for; return to the humanitarian standards of democracy embraced by our Constitution ... NOW!”.

    In the second instance, the Ukrainians have no such option;
they are once more returned to functional slavery, in thrall to a foreign state [I could say much more].

    @47 Jack Bauer

Actually a number of inmates held in Guantanamo Bay were, in fact, innocent. The list of those deemed innocent by the Pentagon includes a 12-13 yr old who has been there nearly half his life now, and a fifteen yr 0ld boy. Two boys no older than 13 have been incarcerated along with half a dozen 15 yr olds. Another who was deemed innocent was beaten so badly he has been crippled for life ( by his account ).

In addition a number of detainees have committed suicide - since they were never charged with anything it's impossible for an objective observer to determine whether they were innocent or not.

A number of detainees are Uyghur separatists whose beef is ( was? ) with China, not the U.S. These might be ones who Uruguay have offered to take. they have proved exceedingly difficult to resettle. China wants them back.

Further to your post(s) I would suggest that summary execution of 'enemy combatants' or 'terrorists' would be guaranteed to even further radicalise the jihadist hordes thereby making the lives of American servicemen/women, diplomats and tourists abroad even more perilous than they already are.

The farce on terror at Guantanamo Bay Cuba is a disgrace of historic proportions. In 2008, the US Supreme Court ruled that detainees have the right to a habeas hearing (minimal due process, no lawyer).

Between 2008 and 2010, 50 detainee petitions were heard. After years of being in a cage without charges, 36 of the 50 were found by federal judges to be wrongfully detained!!!

In other words, 72% of Guantanamo detainees who finally were able to obtain just minimal due process (which is what a habeas hearing is) were found not guilty! Extremist jihadist terrorists exist. There are hateful radical Muslim evil doers. But the U.S. hasn't done a good job of finding them or detaining them!

Indefinite confinement without charge, without presenting evidence, without due process is a crime against humanity.

As far as I'm concerned the Law unfortunately is full of loopholes and has proven to be quite ineffective when dealing with certain situations...But you believe that “”What Stevie is talking about is due process, which is a natural right recognized by international law. Stevie is correct.“”....

I did not deny that international law recognizes natural rights, and I'm not talking about common criminals ; and I suppose YOU think that the 20 hijackers on 9-11 recognized the right to life of their 3000 victims....exactly the same way in which suicide bombers respect the rights of THEIR victims....This IS a war, not some f*****g picnic.

Yr @53..here, you appear to be a self-righteous little prick, who likes to preach your politically correct liberal views to others ...quite frankly, people like you...are not worth their weight in sh*t.
But, may I suggest then that both you and Stevie apply for the right to take a Gitmo prisoner into your home....just remember, keep them away from your wife and daughter.....they think women are just pieces of meat to satisfy their needs...lock up your cleaning products...they're pretty handy at making bombs out of almost anything...they will never be your friend, nor will they respect you, simply because you are of a different religion...but if all that is not a problem, go ahead.

@59 Heisenbergcontext...I am aware that there is a possibility that someone could get jailed unjustly, but in a war, that is colateral damage. As to yr last paragraph, “...further radicalise the jihadist hordes”.... I find it hard to believe they could be more radical than they already are...cutting off heads of foreign reporters , televising it etc....how much further can they go ??

“Collateral damage” is just a cynical euphemism for “oops...we screwed up”. Even when engaged with an enemy that accepts suicide bombings as a legitimate tactic it's still in the U.S.'s interests to have ethical standards when engaged in warfare. Which is why summary execution will never be official policy.

You present some interesting points - #1 Your fear the Republicans might be worse – is VALID!

One must look no further the George W. Bush to see what a piece of vomit the Republicans can cough up. The erosion of the Constitution under Clinton, Bush and now the Obamanation, is opening the door to a future autocratic ruler.

But a Zen moment occurs when a voter realizes that the two party system is a false paradigm. It’s rigged…both parties beholden to the same corporate interests and international bankers.

There is some difference in tone, especially on emotionally charged social issues such as abortion, gay rights, gun control etc., which are used to polarize people to join the blue or red gang, a Democrat or a Republican, Crip or a Blood ….. both gangs LOVE big government, debt and military intervention. There is only an illusion of choice.

Be advised – read Carroll Quigley’s book “Tragedy and Hope” (unabridged version) - an insider’s view about the New World Order, which is a decades old plan for a one world autocratic government and a single monetary system. If that notion is new to you, start with the book called “None Dare Call it a Conspiracy” by Gary Allen.

Regarding Crimea, we should congratulate the Russian people for the repatriation of Crimea. If 82% of the people vote, and 97% of those are in favor of joining Russia, it is clear that Crimeans reject joining the EU and the world banking debt Mafia schemes privy to EU members.

In an ideal world, Crimea would certainly be better off in charge of its own destiny by remaining a sovereign state…. but when surrounded by two wolves, they are being forced to choose one and they have spoken.

    @82 You know Jack!
Why so angry Jack? You say the “law unfortunately is full of loopholes”….yes most would agree.

The Guantanamo prisoners had NO smooth talking lawyer...NO pandering to a jury. There were just federal judges finding in 72% of the cases the orange suits were NOT terrorists.

@83 Heisenbergcontext : ““Collateral damage” is just a cynical euphemism for “oops...we screwed up”. ...Can't disagree with that definition of collateral damage, the bottom line of which, is then an unintended consequence of some act....but isn't that what happens in a war ?? Today, the ”accepted“ concept of warfare, strangely enough, is one that is supposed to spare civilians ...earlier wars just clobbered everyone that got in the way, regardless of whether they were military or civilian.... That said, I look at the suicide bombers, and other types of terrorist acts, and I don't see them trying to spare civilians...much to the contrary, their targets are, most of the time, just civilians....who, to the terrorists are NOT collateral damage...so, you'll excuse my lack of sympathy for terrorists. I'm aware that summary execution will never be ”official policy” - in civilized countries - but in my opinion, in certain cases, exceptions to the rule are / would be welcome.

You have been brainwashed into believing the “WAR ON TERROR” is real!

A real war has a defined objective and end goal. What is the end goal of the “WAR ON TERROR” ? Is it to kill BIN LADEN? That's been done.

Is it to WIPE OUT ALL TERRORISTS? If you say YES to that - do you think that ambiguous goal is ever attainable?

What is the progress report on that task since September 20, 2001 when George W made that declaration? Not so good.

More than 95 percent of all suicide attacks are in response to foreign occupation, according to The National Consortium for the Study of Terrorism and Responses to Terrorism (START) at University of Maryland.

In the countries the US/NATO have meddled, suicide bombings have skyrocketed. Iraq, Afghanistan, Yemen, Pakistan ,Libya, etc are all a complete mess of lawlessness.

Do people feel safer globally? Numerous studies show - No.

Overwhelming evidence shows THAT is EXACTLY what the US/Nato wants .... a fearful populace which is easier to control.

You think that we should just sit around and wait for the radical muslims to finish us off ?? good for you, pacifist numbnuts....remember Neville Chamberlin in 1938 ?? “Peace in our time”, and a few months later Hitler just went about his business as usual.....If you want to, just sit on the fence and ignore reality. What is clear in the Qur'an, the holy book of this “peace-loving” religion, or better described as a “way of life”, is that it preaches death to all non-muslims, regardless of 'foreign occupation', or anything else... I presume you think that if all foreign troops left the middle east tomorrow, the radicals would leave us in peace.....I have my doubts.. I presume also that you are the type who believes that if you “love” them, they will “love” you back....how sweet and naive of you. But pls, don't let me stop you....by all means, adopt a couple of these lovely creatures..

And your “A real war has a defined objective and end goal” ? ......This IS a real war....the fact that the objective and the end goal are not as defined as you think they should be, just means it's not a “conventional” war , but still a war.
To wrap this up, gotta concede that it might not be such a bad idea for the USA / NATO to get the hell out of the middle east, but before they do, could leave one, simple promise : “Don't mess with us again or we WILL come back and wipe you off the face of the earth”...see ? a defined objective.

#94 I cannot convince you of how the US uses fear in a paragraph. Fear is the Foundation of EVERY Government’s Power. Governments understand how people react to fear, they exploit it, and cultivate it.

I recommend reading “The Prince” by Machiavelli to understand the use of fear throughout history. “Tragedy and Hope” is excellent by Bill Clinton’s mentor, or “9/11 Synthetic Terror: Made in USA” by Webster Tarpley

U.S. people have been sold the idea that they MUST give up certain rights so they can have MORE security. Since 2001, US Americans have put up with:

    • Warrantless surveillance
    • Recording of ALL phone calls, and emails
    • Color coded risk levels to keep citizens fearful of terrorists
    • Pre-emptive invasion of foreign countries
    • Committing troops to war without a declaration of war by Congress as mandated in the Constitution
    • Assassination of people on kill lists
    • Extermination of “suspected” enemies by predator drones
    • Cameras and listening devices on public transit & public locations
    • Torture in camps outside of the US
    • Indefinite detention of US citizens without trial
    • The President can now to completely disregard the Constitution and seize private industries
    • Drones monitoring activities of US citizens
    • Bankers don't get jail time in the 2008 meltdown - they get a $750 billion bailout via taxpayer blackmail
    • U.S. cities endure military exercises to condition the masses
    • Attempts to control and censor the Internet through SOPA and CISPA
    • Using tragic mass murders by nut-jobs on psychotropic drugs to disarm US Americans
    • TSA groping citizens using gestapo tactics, treating them like criminals
    • Public schools teaching children what to think keeping the masses fearful and pliable
    • Government agencies (FBI, ATF) create terror plots, luring dupes, providing bombs, and then announce with great fanfare they have foiled a terrorist plot
    • “See something, Say something” government media campaign designed to make citizens paranoid and fearful

That's great geoff......your point is? That you are offended by the word? SO FUCKING WHAT! Man up and soldier on rather than pulling a tissue and cry about it.

Working with the British Army means......nothing to me. Like my posts....they are mere words. However it's nice to see you are proud of your mate's national service.

BTW......my wife is a multi-breed as well. What does that mean? Not a fucking thing. I've actually had people that have never threatened me and acted against me so if you feel like saying that your female mate is so tough as to kick my ass......I can only assume that you are attracted to manly man. But who am I to judge. The heart does what the heart wants.

BTW.....I apologize where I feel the need to apologize. Than again.........maybe instead of half breeds I will steal yankee's term of endearment for them so as not to make the non SA 's cry......monkey's.

    Racist AND sexist.
If you can remove it, I suggest you remove the blusher from your neck.

    I know from past postings that you can be 'quite nice';
    something upsetting you? Your wife?

Stress...too much traveling to places I do not want to go. Too much dying coming up.

In all honesty.....I really do not consider my word choice half breed a racist.....nor am I a sexist. But from a military POV, I would never want to be on the ground on an extended patrol with a woman. I believe they can fly jets, choppers, trucks.......even lob HE rounds 30 clicks away. But when it comes to close quarter combat, extended patrols (though one seldom sees that anymore) I am a sexist.

Wify is just fine, but that you for asking.

dime Geoff.........I will use the word “African American” so I can be PC, even though as I grew up....they referred to themselves as Black, When African Americans call themselves niggers......are they in fact racist based on word choice.......or do you suppose it is used rhetorically?

BTW......I do not feel insulted being called a redneck, though I am not. I suppose a Bostonian redneck would be a Southie........lol. No one ever accused me of being a Southie. If fact I seldom feel insulted with all the stereo-typical references applied to Americans posted here, but that's a double standard because ....afterall.....it's the USA. Then again.....our government actions garner it, though the people are often stereo-typed...........by the half breeds on this site. Half breeds in SA and mutts in the USA........que sera sera.

    A few things I will never be Geoff....PC, a Socialist, a Conservative. When I see a spade......I call it a spade.

Prefecto.......many of us seek the same destination, we only take a different route. Some courser than others. I've never claimed to be a polished individual, though I am not are rough as others.
I'll break bread and coffee with anyone until they prove I should not....be they Guaranis (and I have up in Missones and southern Brazil), Muslims, Chinese, Africans. Don't judge me by the words I used than the actions I live by. However, I cannot expect you to know that from the internet and can only opine base on my posts. Anyway.....we are on the same page. As for your mate serving in the military.....I truly do have a prejudice for the people in uniform......positively that is. Even for my past enemy in uniform because it takes a certain gene to be willing to die for a way of life. Radical Muslims I do not see in that same light nor as people in uniform.

I know you are in Uruguay, perhaps one day we will unbeknownst bump into one another.

Since when is “mestizo” foul language?

Half breed is just a plain dumb thing to say and all in accordance to Poppy's intellect.

    There are no half breeds.

Only full breeds of different flavours...

@115....Again ?? I don't usually think about them....but this time, for you, I'll make an exception....but it'll only be for a few seconds - the time it takes for a long-dong to disappear up your pimply anus....bumboy !
