A high level Argentine diplomatic mission visited last week Timor-Leste, in the Asia Pacific area to reaffirm close political, economic and cooperation links between the two countries, and confirm support for Argentina's demand for Falklands/Malvinas sovereignty negotiations with the UK. Mar 31st, 2014 - 05:00 pm - Link - Report abuse 0From Wikipedia : In late 1975, East Timor declared its independence but later that year was invaded and occupied by Indonesia and was declared Indonesia's 27th province the following year. In 1999, following the United Nations-sponsored act of self-determination, Indonesia relinquished control of the territory, and East Timor became the first new sovereign state of the 21st century on May 20, 2002

In their East Timor judgment of 1995 the ICJ stated that the right to self-determination has an erga omnes character and is irreproachable. (refers to a right or obligation that applies to everyone not just a few).

I think this Eduardo Zuaín geezer lies like a pig in shit.....
To gain credibility, you need it from either a credible source or be one yourself.. The shameful thing is Argentina at the moment is neither on the political stage; which is poor given its population and potential leverage being the largest Spanish speaking country in Latam. I sincerely hope it can sort itself out in the future and be a nation which can contribute to the world stage in a positive manner which it deserves.
Mar 31st, 2014 - 09:54 pm - Link - Report abuse 0Timore Leste definitely does NOT support Argentina's position. The selective quote by Argentina shows this.
Apr 01st, 2014 - 12:51 am - Link - Report abuse 0Timor Leste is actually the proof that territorial continuity and proximity do NOT trump self-determination according to international law and the UN.

All Argentina have to support their claims is lies-how pathetic.
They should really look up the word 'context.'
So East Timor is another bought member of the long-discredited C24. Must be long past time when refusing a seat on the C24 is a start in gaining respect.

Bhaaahahaha
Apr 01st, 2014 - 12:31 pm - Link - Report abuse 0This is ironic given Argentina's declining influence in the part of the world where Timor Leste is. By my rough calculations, they have made this trip just in time to connect to and get home on probably the last ever Aerolineas Argentinas flight out of Sydney before that airline, having already abandoned New Zealand about two years ago, shuts up shop in Australia as well, thereby terminating its last south pacific route and by extension any connection with SE Asia. Any later and they would have had to cross the pacific on a carrier from another country. Probably LAN Chile.
Apr 01st, 2014 - 01:11 pm - Link - Report abuse 0East Timor? Is this an April fools story?
Apr 01st, 2014 - 01:20 pm - Link - Report abuse 0Tomorrow is of course Malvinas Day when all Argentina celebrates the liberation of Las Malvinas by an illegal Argentine Governmentwhich has of course nothing to do with Argentina which is one of the worlds oldest democracys and is famous around the world for its human rights record.
@21 Justthefacts.....
Apr 01st, 2014 - 09:13 pm - Link - Report abuse 0The last Aerolineas Argentinas A340 leaves Sydney today.... they stopped calling at Auckland 'cos they couldn't afford the landing fees.... then they found with a full fuel load out of Sydney the couldn't carry a full load of passengers..... obviously didn't do their sums in advance....what a joke...
Qantas operated a direct service from Syd to Dog Shit City for a couple of years but they gave it up because people didn't want to go there...
Smacks of massive desperation on the part of the Argentine gov.

Apr 02nd, 2014 - 02:12 am - Link - Report abuse 0Trust me, I've done the route many a time...Aerolineas have done us all a favour. It's so bad it shouldn't even be an option.....unless you enjoy one screen for the whole cabin to watch the movies, which itself doesn't even work.
Flying with LAN is a godsend compared to Aerolineas.......however, you still have the ridiculously long wait at passport control and customs in Ezeiza whilst having to watch a repeating video of CFK propaganda crap

“renewed support for Argentina/UK negotiations to solve the sovereignty dispute over the Falklands/Malvinas Islands, in accordance with UN resolutions”.
Apr 02nd, 2014 - 06:55 am - Link - Report abuse 0What resolutions would they be?
Given East Timor's history, Portuguese colony, terrible suffering during WW2, then the Indonesian invasion and more suffering, then finally achieving an end to its 'colonial situation' thanks to a UN sponsored act of self-determination and help from countries like Australia, the US and UK, they are hardly likely to support Argentina’s naïve arguments regarding their colonial ambitions in the Falklands.
The Argentine invasion of the Falklands in 1982 and the terrible suffering that the Islanders endured is something that the people of East Timor can relate to, and make them even more likely to support the right of self-determination of the Falkland Islanders.
The current crop of Argentine politicians must live in some sort of fantasy world. I wonder what colour the sky is?
25 I have done that flight a few times, and once or twice just the relatively short hop to Auckland. I was never worried about the movie screen, I just wanted the engines to keep working. The shabby interiors and seats always left me wondering if the vital functioning parts of the aircraft were in full working order, and with the general casualness of things (seats set to recline literally as we were still on the runway taking off from Syd and not a word of objection from the cabin crew) the last thing on my mind was what the in-flight movie would be. When you are 60 degrees south in the pacific with icebergs visible out the window, and 4-5 hours flight time from the nearest airport, one doesn't like to think about it too much. Having said that, I am not aware of any in-flight emergencies ever taking place on that flight.
Apr 02nd, 2014 - 12:15 pm - Link - Report abuse 0... according to a release from the Argentine ministry says it all.
Apr 05th, 2014 - 02:44 am - Link - Report abuse 0Everybody on Timor Leste are aware, that if they actually supported the Argentine claim for the Falkland Islands, they would be supporting Indonesia's claim on Timor Leste and that is absolutely NO! NO!
