The Brazilian government is constructing the Belo Monte mega-dam on the Xingu River in the Amazon.
If it was ready NOW, for the World Cup and Olympics - and every dry season - this annual shortage would not be a problem; as long as the rest of the rainforest is protected.

Only 40 days to go! Can they keep the lights on? Nerve wracking stuff!

Brazilian preparations for the World Cup is like watching a (very) slow motion multiple car crash.

Odebrecht, the general contractor of the Itaipú Dam and other similar projects, had an interesting visit yesterday.

Big business was always going to come in the firing-line for the disaffected and politicised - people who feel that the WC and Olympics give them the best sounding-board through which to make their voices heard.
    Who better than Odebrecht?

Sometimes though it's not the contractor that's the problem - Salvador is now 20 years on with still no Metro. Masses of funding has filled the pockets of Wagner and his political friends. If it's the politicians who 'fund' the Movimento dos Trabalhadores Rurais Sem Terra, etc, it tends to keep them away from YOUR door. That's why Odebrecht's HQ gets the paint-treatment.

Actually, it is reciprocal. Odebrecht is tied in with the PT and President Dilma quite well. The company has been rewarded with some of the best projects in Brasil.

Many use the Odebrecht private jet at no expense for flying around the country.

I like that jet but I find that the toilets are a bit cramped. I've told them I'll use my own one in the future.
