Uruguayan author Eduardo Galeano said in an interview published on the Argentine newspaper Perfil.com that he considers his 1971 book “The Open Veins of Latin America”, by far his best-known work, to be so bad he will no longer read from it during public appearances. Read full article

@5 No, there will be no new world order or huge revolution. If you are pinning your hopes for the future on that you need to think again.
May 08th, 2014 - 12:54 pm - Link - Report abuse 0People, by dint of their nature, will never be equal. You can strive for equal opportunities for all but even that is near nigh impossible to achieve (though we shouldn't stop trying). The best society can do is build a structure within the law and to make it the social norm through education that people should be offered equal opportunities.
What you fail to understand is that people simply are not equal. Some are better looking, have better genes, are genetically healthier, are sociopathic, are more intelligent etc. There is no real equality.
Laws can help to make it easier for the disadvantaged. Education can pull people out of poverty. Society can elect to help the less able. But ultimately there is no perfect model where everyone is equal and everyone is the same.
People are individuals with different abilities, emotions, dreams, ideals, cultures, and opinions. That is what makes us human.
Mr. Galeano is dead right!

Mind you, the expose of Galeano's 'The Open Veins' (1971), the 'Guide to the Perfect Latin American Idiot' (1996) was no great literary work either, in spite of the MV Llosa contribution.

May 09th, 2014 - 09:29 am - Link - Report abuse 0Galeano says he did not have the “necessary education” in economics and politics at the time he composed it, and that “Its traditional leftist-style prose is awful”.
My contention was always with the econo-political argument, which I found multiply flawed. This was amply supported when the Latin American Idiot came out in the 90s.
If the translation was 'good' then I must have been seriously upset with the rhetoric of the Left that it forced on me through all those tedious pages.
Anyway, I guess his 'volte face' would allow him to get a Green Card now, should he ever need one ;-)

In nationally televised remarks, Venezuelan Chief Justice Luisa Estella Morales said Venezuela's 1999 constitution eliminated manual recounts in favor of a “system audit.”
“In Venezuela the electoral system is completely automated. Therefore, a manual count does not exist. Anyone who thought that could really happen has been deceived,” she said.
“The majority of those who are asking for a manual count know it and are clear about it. Elections are not audited ballot by ballot but through the system.”
Her comments came a day after the sounds of clanking pots and pans and bursting fireworks rang out in Caracas as tensions mounted over Venezuela's tight election results.
You do know who Luisa Estella Morales actually is, don't you Stevie?

She was appointed to the Supreme Tribunal by the National Assembly on December 13, 2004 for a period of 12 years. There aren't always audio sources made available for interviews. For example, a few month Mujica did an interview with El Mercurio which only appeared in the printed medium.

Even his main one refers to a response to the original news. The man doesn't even know what he posts.
The next two links refers to comments on the news, by some unknown bloggers.
The Chilean el Cuidadano refers to según entrevistas without naming whom he talked to.
La Capital names no sources, but merely states he said it.
Here, let me help you with the proper main one, at least the one he claims to be the main one (a bit strange as the book fair was in Brasil, not Argentina...)

Now, a lot of news sites saying he said it on the book fair.
None of them was there though, as not one of them claims to have had a reporter on the book fair.
Question is then, where are those people Galeano did speak to? It's reasonable to think they should have the story out in first person view long before the ones claiming he said it on the book fair.

There is no audio release. Why should there be? Is nothing printed valid unless accompanied by audio? Even if there were an audio release you would claim it as false.
It's not my Portuguese that fails, Condorito.
May 13th, 2014 - 01:18 pm - Link - Report abuse 0It's your affirmation that the expressed words comes from Galeano's mouth.
Lot of microphones on the site, I'm sure there is an audio release affirming your position.
Until then, keep fishing...
Stevie,
May 13th, 2014 - 06:20 pm - Link - Report abuse 0No fishing and no bait required. They already got you hooked.
It's ok, I'm sure the official news site of the federal district of Brasilia has good reason to fabricate this story. Paranoid much.
It it was a fabricated story, Galeano himself would correct it. He speaks portuguese and is a very well informed man, who is always in touch with brazilian left-wing writers and constantly visit the country.
May 13th, 2014 - 06:33 pm - Link - Report abuse 0It it was a fabricated story, Galeano himself would correct it
May 13th, 2014 - 10:21 pm - Link - Report abuse 0Exactly. A sane person would arrive at that conclusion.
Why is there nothing about the subject in the Uruguayan press?
May 13th, 2014 - 11:36 pm - Link - Report abuse 0Aaaah! The slow, tortuous death of the Left in Latin America.
May 14th, 2014 - 01:32 am - Link - Report abuse 0Por Fin!
I would take pleasure in this but I see too many that I care for that are suffering.
Hopefully this will be over soon and these Societies can move forward to a better future.
They have suffered enough.
Galeano doesn't read your alternative news, and no major news site has had this as news.
May 14th, 2014 - 09:06 am - Link - Report abuse 0Keep fishing.
Stevie,
May 14th, 2014 - 09:49 am - Link - Report abuse 0just give the great man a phone call,
with Skype to validate who you talk to.
Simples.

May 14th, 2014 - 09:57 am - Link - Report abuse 0That makes no sense!
I'm not the one in doubt....
I'm not the one in doubt....
May 14th, 2014 - 12:38 pm - Link - Report abuse 0Oh yes you are.
Keep fishing Stevie.
Condorito
May 14th, 2014 - 01:17 pm - Link - Report abuse 0You are the one that is dependant of and sitisfied with some unknown news site and subsequent parrots in order to prove your point...
I prefer penguins to parrots.
May 14th, 2014 - 07:22 pm - Link - Report abuse 0Just for the record.
Hmm the Empresa Brasil de Comunicação is now an unknown news site.
May 14th, 2014 - 11:56 pm - Link - Report abuse 0Good to know for future reference that government owned media can't be trusted in South America.
That's a government owned company, Anglolatino. Means it's non-profit. Has nothing to do with Dilma and her government, nor does it follow any other policy than to appease to its readers for a budgetted amount of cash.
May 15th, 2014 - 12:16 am - Link - Report abuse 0They parrot too, as they don't mention any sources other than he said in Brasilia.
They even have a video on the event where Galeano says nothing of the sort.
There is also a 15 min video on the event on he net where Galeano says nothing of the sort either.
Keep fishing, Anglolatino.
Or go hungry...
Authors have, through history, reversed their position on their tract or polemic.
May 15th, 2014 - 12:43 pm - Link - Report abuse 0Galiano is just the latest in a long line of politically inspired individuals that change their position because of their experience of life subsequent to publication.
My Brasilian ex-partner changed from a 'freedom fighter' (distinctly of the Left), to a distinctly Right of Centre powerful critic of PT/Lula.
You will experience the same Damascene Transition as you accumulate years, Stevie.
The problem is that 'The Open Veins ..' Bible of Galeano has become a foundation of belief for the Bolivarian Left.
Thus Galeano's recantation totters structures across South America.
It is that important.
