Four exchange rates in the country, are you joking? How on earth can you do business in that country if you don't know what exchange rate is being used. Do you just say it is tuesday so the rate is X? It is friday so the rate is Y

    Unbelievable.

Venezuela cannot pay it's previous debts to the airlines, threatens the airlines if they cut service for non-payment ( which some have done despite the threats ), raises the international fares by 350 %, and blames it all on the World Cup.

Someone should write a book. Instead of the “ Sayings of Chairman Mao ” is should be the “ Propaganda, Plots, and Excuses of Chávez and Maduro. ” to be sold in the Storytelling section.

I do not know what is worse: Cuba advising Venezuela, or Venezuela then advising Argentina. It reminds me of a toxic waterfall.

    #2...
If enough Venezuelans would have wanted Maduro out, he would have been out long ago. So don't blame it on the Bosa-Nova, world cup OR whatever.

    3. He has the Military backing him...for now. When they turn then he'll be out.
With people breaking into bakeries then fistfighting over day old bread my guess is it won't be long now.

Venezuela is typical third world country.
Its economic and financial policies and its methods of operation locally and internationally going all directions just like windy and rain day at the same time.
Eventually, foreign airlines will not longer operate in Venezuela, because not only fly tickets are at high price, but once in Venezuela the traveled can not find the basic food items such as milk, eggs, butter and most cases bread.
It is a pity that current business and economic trends in this oil producing country leads to several deep worries and questions such as:
Maduro, former bus driver and Colombian born citizen, what is he doing as President of the world 5th Oil producing country?

Shouldn't Brazil pick up the bill? I thought they said it was the fault of the world cup for the high prices?

    @1
    Short answer? You can't. I used to. I don't now. Because I can't.

Re: the book has not been published yet, to my knowledge, but the website has!!!!!

Hugo Perez Hernaiz is Professor of Sociology. University Central de Venezuela. His blog (above) will keep you up dated on political paranoia gripping the Maduro administration.

    @3
It is Maduro blaming the airline withdrawals on the World Cup, not Bothino!

    @5
You are correct that tourism is almost dead in Venezuela but people will always still need to travel for family or business. That said it is going in the same direction as North Korea

    Hallo Ilsen -

Many thanks to you for the excellent link to Professor Hugo Perez Hernaiz, of the University Central de Venezuela.

The announcements of imaginary plots and conspiracies appears now to be a scheduled, daily event by the Maduro government, which must keep the Cuban minders and pulp fiction writers very busy. It is no doubt hard to keep up with these fantasies spewing out in such volume, and keeping a straight face.

When coupled with the other announcements, such as the topic of this thread article ( 350 % increase in international flights ticketed from Venezuela ), one wonders how the government has any time left to perform any normal, daily business for the country.

Repeated phrases of “ we will release the information on this plot, ” “ more information is forthcoming, ” “ I will show proofs, ” and “ I've ordered so-and-so-lackey to release the information, ” which ( -wait for it- ) never comes !

References to “ The Fatherland, Political High Command of the Revolution, Bolivarian Peoples, etc. ” sound quite hollow today, in view of how Venezuela is regressing and crumbling away economically.

The $ 2 billion USD promised by Russia for payment of future oil shipments will vaporize in some mismanaged Maduro scheme, or more likely disappear into someone's sized XXXL-fat pocket.

    Hullo Botinho,
You seem to be well informed about Venezuela already but I'm glad you found the link interesting.

The latest from Maduro is that he will “release scientific evidence of the plots against the state”.

I am not sure what he means. I doubt he even knows himself. Perhaps he thinks the undereducated and impoverished mass that forms most of his support will respond to it?

    Hi Ilsen -

    Thank you for the update.

“ Scientific evidence ” from Mr. Maduro is either from History Channels “ Ancient Aliens, ” or comic books, possibly Manga.

When Chavez died Madman said that he would offer concrete proof that the US had something to do with his death. Within weeks. Still nothing. This air fare crap is so that he can try to prevent the citizens from leaving his hell hole. Wonder how many prisons are being built to hold all the plotters?? And soon there won't be any airline flying there anyway.

That's what you get when the government steals the money instead of allowing the airlines to repatriate their funds.
@12 Mendoza Canadian, if not mistaken, this 350% increase refers only to international flight...that is, presuming that VZ does have domestic airlines ?? Ilsen @10, can you clarify ??
Anyway, regardless of the internal mess, I think that if the ignorant majority of voters had enough sense to realize who the idiot MADuro really is, they wouldn't have voted to continue with all this Bolivarian shit, and again, if they wanted to leave, they wouldn't need to fly out, they could just cross the border into Colombia or the ex-British Guyana, provided the latter were willing to let them in...

The “ignorant majority” are just that. Living on government handouts and uneducated. That's why they keep voting for these idiots. Same story all over SA...unfortunately.

Venezuela has about 3 or 4 domestic airlines. It currently maybe more or less. They don't always fly all the time so it is hard to know which ones are still in business or not. Or have just closed the 'shop' for a few weeks....
Others can be booked solid for months in advance.
it's all a bit chaotic at the moment, but, yes Venezuela does have domestic airlines such as Conviasa. Just not always when you need them.
    No National carrier.

    Hope that clarifies.

@15 Ilsen - yes, certainly does. You have portrayed a pretty clear image of just one more big problem in VZ . Tks.

The overland night-buses are equally chaotic.
    For example:
Back in January this year, after being unable to get an internal flight from Merida to Caracas, I tried to get a coach. Yet they only sell tickets on the same day for the night bus. I had to queue from 07:00 until 11:00 only to be told they were 'not sure' the bus would run. “Come back at 15:00” they said. I did, but no joy.
I had to get a taxi to Caracas!!!! (400km!).
At each State border crossing I had to pay a bribe to the fat, lazy Police/Army because they found a 'fault' with my Passport/Innoculation Record (no innoculations needed for my journey). Call it Gringo Tax if you like.....
I used to have employees in Venezuela and pay tax, now I have closed my businesses and have been tragically forced to make some people homeless. MUCH AGAINST MY WISHES! I still send these ex-employees some cash when I can... because they were loyal.
I understand they are now living with family but I still hate the situation I was forced into by the Chavista scum.
How can I sell for less (at retail) than what I paid for (at wholesale)?
    Just because Maduro decrees?
    Aaaargh!

@17, what a disgusting state of affairs....don't envy you at all, feeling like you want to kill all the SOB's but are powerless. VZ will only stop going down the drain once all Chavistas are killed or kicked out of the country. The former is probably a better option...definitive.

Thanks Jack. It is certainly frustrating. I just have to concentrate on what I am doing in London, and do my best to get the family out. Which is difficult when the administration say the do not have the materials to produce passports.

I love Venezuela but at the moment it is well and truly screwed.
