Spain's King Juan Carlos, 76, said he was abdicating in favor of his son because he did not want him to wither waiting as Prince Charles expects to in England, according to a report from the Daily Telegraph. The comment reportedly was made to his household staff: I must give way; I have fulfilled my mission Read full article

Line of the Succession to the British Throne is determined by Law; it is not up to one's wishes, even those of the Reigning Monarch.
It would take an Act of the Parliament (of the UK and of all the countries of the Realm) to actually remove someone from from Line of the Succession - and a very, very serious reason would be required for that one.
Prince Charles could only loose his succession rights if:
- He marries a Catholic
- Converts to Catholic religion himself
- Abdicates after becoming a King
- Commits a treason and looses his succession rights by an Act of the Parliament
- Commits a highly serious crime (murder or similar) and is removed from Line of the Succession by an Act of the Parliament.
Elizabeth by the grace of god, Queen of England.

Jun 11th, 2014 - 06:05 am - Link - Report abuse 0A Voice is correct. There is a distinct line of succession that only an Act of Parliament could change, but it would also have to be changed in the 15 other countries that have the Queen as Head of State.
It isn't as easy as people might think.
Also why would you foist such a heavy burden on Prince William? Let him live his life and enjoy the little freedom he has now to be with his wife and son. Being Monarch is a full time job. No days off at all - ever. HM even receives official documents on her holidays, she is never 'off-duty'.
A Voice you are a little behind the times on the rules of succession.
The Catholic thing was revoked a few years ago. He can marry a Catholic, he just can't BE a Catholic. That's because the British Monarch is Head of the Church of England. It would be like appointing a Protestant to be Pope...just not going to happen is it?
As for the other points you are correct, except that abdication itself ISN'T allowed unless decreed by an Act of Parliament. He can't just 'choose' to quit. It doesn't actually work like that, it isn't an automatic thing.
The British constitution is quite clear of the line of succession, and it is far more complicated than other countries with monarchies, mainly because Our Monarch is also the Head of State of 15 other countries. The Spanish King is the Monarch of Spain only, no other countries need to ratify anything that changes the line of succession or even an abdication.
Even if HM the Queen were to become senile or very ill, she would still be Queen and Head of State, and Prince Charles would be appointed (through an Act of Parliament) as Prince Regent: basically King in all but name. As we all know, there is a precedent set for that.
I also don't know where these people get the idea that Charles is desperate to get the throne, I mean why would he? He has far more freedom being Prince of Wales, than he would have being Monarch, and I doubt he is eager for his mother to die.

Water off a duck's back
Non Anglos such as Argentina go into apoplexy over minor matters.
Your country MAY grow up one day.....who knows, it may even happen to you !

Venezuela could do with a Constitutional Monarch and a free and fair democracy based on the UK model;

People are dying.
The Government is massively corrupt.
There is critical insecurity and constant danger in the streets.
A critical lack of medicine.
The World’s highest Inflation Rate.
A critical lack of basic goods and services.
An ideological take-over leading to a Vene-Cuban form of enforced indentured state-dependency.
Widespread media censorship.
Constant repression of political opposition.
THOUSANDS illegally jailed without trial.
Daily torture and abuse of the Human Rights of the population.
Why does Latin America remain silent?
Why is Mercopress NOT reporting on the chaos in Venezuela?

oh no no.
Elizabeth by grace of an Irish soldier.
Medical fact. We know Queen Victoria passed on haemophilia to her descendants. Seventeen generations of the family on Queen Victoria's mother's side have been investigated by scientists at the Royal Society of Medicine. Not one has haemophilia.
Nor was there any haemophilia in the Royal Family before Victoria, so the finger really does point to Queen Victoria's father having been someone other than the Duke of Kent. It must have been the awful Sir John Conroy with that haemophiliac gene.
Seems that somewhere along the way the royal lineage ... and the crown jewels ... got raided.
(admittedly this was in the daily mail, but still factual...surprisingly)

So now its a criminal offence to pass this on innocently,

it may not be a criminal offence but the suggestion is there.
I think you missed the point.
Jun 12th, 2014 - 06:58 pm - Link - Report abuse 0Somewhere along the Royal blood line (and more than once it seems) a not so royal gentleman raided the crown.
Britons have been deifying the bastard grand-children of a crafty Irish soldier.
The king didn't have it in him it seems, but the queen sure did. lol.
