Argentina is promoting the use of the distinctive label of Mar Argentino, Salvaje y Austral, for fishery produce traded by Argentine companies. The Federal Fisheries Council, CFP, is responsible for the implementation of the initiative which aims to incorporate the origin seal and promotional brochures. Read full article

1982 - The Falklands Islands (population approx 3,000) beat/defeat Argentina (population approx 40,000,000) in a war. Argentina humiliated ... the rest of the world especially the Chileans at football matches take the piss.

Jun 16th, 2014 - 02:45 am - Link - Report abuse 0I think that it is great to brand food products from countries and regions within countries. In Australia, Tasmania and especially King Island are seen as premium products and hence the brand is closely guarded.
Jun 16th, 2014 - 02:52 am - Link - Report abuse 0However a small note that there is no such place as the Argentine or Argentinean Sea. The IHO, of which Argentina is a member, does not recognise the designation. It is a purely domestic geographical term, though now it seems to be a food label.
Food label - like Patagonian Toothfish, caught off of Chilé, is marketed as Chilean Sea Bass.

@7 - when was the last time Argentina won the rugby world cup? When was the last time Argentina did anything good in hockey? When was the last time argentina got in to the top ten medal rankings for the olympic games? When was the last time argentina won the football world cup without having the reputation of cheating? And you think we're bad at sports? Sorry but Argentina has a worse sporting history than the UK does - and besides those sports the argentines enjoy so much - you're welcome - we invented them!

And as far as sport is concerned - I see that the Ireland rugby XV handsomely beat the Pumas over the weekend and your hockey teams - men and women - have had little luck over the past few days.
So, really, all your infantile boasting is totally risible!
I'm so pleased about this labelling. As far as I can see, for many people, it will translate as salvaged from australia. The danger, of course, is that people will think the garbage comes from the Austral Islands in French Polynesia. Perhaps there'll be some objections. The important thing is to shove it to the back and leave it to rot. Shouldn't take long to persuade stores not to stock it. Perhaps it will find a use as fertiliser!
Jun 16th, 2014 - 10:25 am - Link - Report abuse 0I think we should do the same bullshit and make maps of Argentina with The Falkland Islands Sea around it, well the Islands were actually called the Falkland Islands before Argentina existed.

Jun 16th, 2014 - 02:32 pm - Link - Report abuse 0You can call it what you wants but it ain't all yours !
The exclusive economic zone claimed by Argentina overlap with claims maintained by the United Kingdom on behalf of the Falkland Islanders and similar claims around the Island of South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands. The UK Falkland Islands claim boundary starts from the midpoint between Argentina and the Islands to the West and stretches 200 nautical miles in other directions with similar claims around the other British Overseas Territories.[2]
Argentina announced its claim without consultation with the United Kingdom and despite the fact that the United Kingdom has administered the area, for the most part peacefully, for over 180 years. In the years 1990 to 2005 fishing and mineral resources in the area were adminstered by joint commissions between Argentina and the United Kingdom,
note the following !!!!!!!
Argentina unilaterally withdrew from these organisations in 2005 to pursue a more aggressive stance in its claim to the Falkland Islands. At any one time Argentina usually has a single vessel patrolling the undisputed area of its claim,[3] the vessels do not enter the exclusive economic zone of the United Kingdom although there have been reports of Argentine warships threatening vessels on the Falkland side of the border by radio.[4]

Bear in mind that most, if not all, of their cannon ammunition is out of date so the threat is minimal anyway unless some missiles work. Ha, ha ,ha.

Jun 16th, 2014 - 03:35 pm - Link - Report abuse 0Handsomely beat the Pumas? A 6 point-win is handsomely won? Ireland are the reigning 6N champions which most likely means they tore you a new one during play, and Argentina was playing an A side completely, whose first matches together were THIS WEEK, and Ireland had played an entire competitive tournament together!
And you really have the gall to trash Argentina's hockey when they beat YOU for men's bronze and your bastard offspring for women's bronze?? (and they had won the world cup the last time anyway)
This is exactly the anti-argentine hate I alluded to in the other thread, which is why I will remain as TTT and never go back as Tobias. You people are incapable of intellectual honesty and objective commentary.
@21
Uhmmm... for the record, the Argentine Sea (the internationally, geographically, geologically, politically, and biologically accepted one), does not include the South Geogia, and the other islands you mentioned.
The only disputable area would the Falklands. To me there is no dispute given my personal position, but that's not the case as of yet at the government level.

And also why does the label show the Falklands on it, surely this cant be CFK's latest proof of sovereignty, that they have been on a label for few years.
if they wanted to sell their stuff quicker and at a better price, they should actually label it produce of Chile. A more stable and better country

Jun 16th, 2014 - 08:44 pm - Link - Report abuse 0I have no objection to calling it the Argentine Sea as it is contiguous with the Argentine mainland. However it does not cover sovereignty over the area shown in the map at the top of this article. That is what is implied by the Federal Fisheries Council .
