Every dollar the Argentine govt spends on legal and associated fees on this matter is a dollar that could be more productively used to reduce its debts.

    Agreed,
with all the money wasted of court fees , lawyers fees, expenses ,
they could just as easily paid off a large chunk of it.

“Buenos Aires has alternately threatened..........”! Argies just don't get it. They lost! The law, and justice, has prevailed. Tell the cowardly 93% scumbags they'll have to wait. Sometime in the next 36 days. If they're lucky. Mind you, couldn't those out-of-pocket bondholders start their own legal action on the grounds that they were forced into the “restructuring” under duress? Or perhaps they could sell to that nice Mr Singer. Who now has precedent on his side!

Good move by Griesa, the costs of which should be borne by the argies, otherwise they could just pay up and be done with it!

These cretins will NEVER bow to legal force; they will have to be dragged kicking and screaming to give up every asset of The Dark Country to NML, et al. At the end of it they will look what they are: weak, feeble and finished.

    GOOD.

I know for a fact I am young enough that within my lifetime I WILL SEE a broken, destitute, debt-ridden Britain (or what's left of it). And I will be so happy to see it, when your children or grandchildren get absolutely NO MERCY and are sold as slaves to China to pay off the Disunited Kingdom's debts.

Because it will happen, given your debt levels and economic/demographic trajectory.

I will be the first one cheering that you brits are treated like cattle, sold, and starved until you pay every single last cent.

    6 Nostrils The Homeless

    Nostrils,

    You will be homeless soon.
Your mother will lose her job, and when your mother dies of despair and the arduous physical menial work to support her callous son, you will have nothing.

I would hope you would feel guilt, but I doubt you could accept that - it is somebody else's fault.

@8 Callous son, indeed. He wouldn't even share his takeaway barbecue with his mother and calls her a gold digger. She must be so proud.

TTT doesn't have a clue about the world outside of his bedroom.

The Argentine government should grasp this lifeline of mediation with humility. They lost and the winners, NML, have no obligation to discuss anything with Argentina other than swift payment.

I wonder if any Argentines realise that if they had been more humble, and their bonkers President had kept her mouth shut, they may have won the moral ground. As it is, they even lost that.

Probably not as they are stark raving mad.

    Demographic and economic trajectory?

    http://www.spectator.co.uk/features/9039871/why-britains-economy-will-overtake-germanys/

If you want to talk about debt, we can talk all we like about Argentina.....

The uk debt is serviceable due to the output it has. The problem you don't understand is the uk has been in worse economic positions in the past and prevailed. Given the report above in theory we will have a bigger tax base to accommodate our expenditure and be even more successful.

Btw the only country which believes in selling peoples basic human rights for economic reasons these days is the one attempting to take over the falklands....

The bit that continues to confuse Trolley is the UK National Debt.

He seems to believe that the UK has a net debt to foreigners. This simply is not true.

Firstly, 2/3 of the Uk National debt is owned by UK citizens and their pension funds. This 2/3 is a win:win....pension funds get a small but extremely safe return, the UK government gets capital. How that 2/3 could ever end up with our grandchildren being sold to slavery to China????? Only in trolleys mind.

The final 1/3 is owned by international funds. This is a sizeable sum of money. However, it also shows that these international funds recognise the security of UK bonds.

For the complete picture, we need to look at the size of international investments of UK funds, who invest in government bonds around the world.

So, it is pretty safe to say, that the Uk can service its internal national debt, and indeed it's international debt...because its own investment funds amount to greater than the debt.

It's terribly sad that poor Trolley is so lost, so bitter, so destroyed by the failure of his countries government, he is lashing out and wishing the worst on his perceived enemy.

His really enemy is of course the evil, corrupt scum his people have voted for.

    Shame on them and him.

Correct, but the debate @6 was about demographics of the uk.

The productivity/growth will be whatever it is at the time, like all countries. But you still need a population base to fuel your potential economy and fund the state.

The article is just stating the increase in population sizes coupled with the growth estimates makes the uk future prospects looking rosy.

It would be really nice if Argentina's friends in LATAM and MERCOSUR rallied round and helped their poor friend and organised a whip round. A few million dollars here and a few million there from each should sort this problem out once and for all. And then Argentina can pay them back ... let's say in August (2014) or whenever they can.

And even if they did allow exploration, AND seizing, it would all still need to court in the local jurisdiction no matter what US law said. And then EVEN if all that happens and the asset is liquidated, who gets what?

@54 there is also the problem that Argentina's debt has grown so large it can't be paid in full, not anytime soon. We even have trouble meeting its interests. It is obvious for everyone in Argentina that the debt is unpayable. Sooner or later a large chunk must be either pardoned or paid over a very long time with very low interests. The REAL problem is that Argentina can't cut spending enough, or else there will be civil war. It won't be as easy for the IMF to impose austerity as in Spain, Italy and Greece. Here the poor are far more violent and they can and will wage war.

@58 Peronists won't learn, they laugh at all the people who think capitalism rewards productivity... that is how they see the world and they will always see it this way.

@61 without loans where are they going to get the money they need and they want from?

    68. In Argentina the Peronistas are correct that capitalism doesn't work. The gov't and the crazy policies makes it so.

Eventually the population will demand that relations become normalized with the rest of the world.

It will probably take a few cold winters with blackouts and street fighting over day old bread. Just like what is happening in Venezuela now.
So give it a couple more years. The debt isn't going anywhere. The interest and penalties keep accruing.
The only losers are the middle class and poor Argentinians and nobody cares about them.
