Hmmm, lack of support and no assistance during the Falkands war and some sparklers on a cake.

I think we are about even now.

The Yanks should be reminded that the burnings were retaliation for what US forces burnt in York (Toronto) which included private dwellings.

I suspect the only outraged people are the media. However, I think leaving party planning to the interns is probably not such a good idea.

I think its funny. Grown ups live in the present. It is too bad our Rg friends are still fighting hurt feelings from a couple centuries ago.

Well, the yanks have that Statue of Lafayette around the back. Only a short time ago they were calling their allies Surrender Monkeys. Remember Freedom Fries and banning French cheese?

All part of the repartee, the US is still the country us Brits are closest too, apart from the Canadians and Aussies that is.

Nothing to apologize for! Burning the White House after Yanks sacked our Canadian town of York (now city of Toronto)? Priceless! http://www.eighteentwelve.ca/?q=eng/Topic/47

@8. Why don't you research all the assistance argieland received during the Falklands War? France, Israel, Russia, Brazil, Peru, Libya to name just a few. And didn't the UK BUY everything it got from the US?

This is a non issue and a non story with a feeble attempt to sever USA and UK alliances on the MP. If I were to interpret it I would as the Brits saying.......despite wars in our past.......we are still allies and the White House still stands.

COme n MP, there is a lot better news than looks for PC shit.

The reason stereotypes endure is because there is an element of truth in them, otherwise it would not become a stereotype. I am sure we are all bright enough to know when to use them in good humour.

MP is a news agency and I did see this reported in a number of places. I doubt any lasting damage has been done. It you heard some of the banter between my English and American friends you would consider this mild at best. That it happened at diplomatic level was a bit thoughtless. As I said before, D C is full of summer interns.

So we burned the White House in 1814 and on the 8th of January, 1815 in a place called New Orleans, the yanks spanked us for playing with matches.

It's history and whats more its the history of the White House, one of the worlds most famous buildings and it adds to the fame of the place.

    For Guy Fawks sake!!
Recent authentic research by the Malvinas Institution have established beyond doubt that the descendents of Guido Faucus are alive and well in Argentina .
A formal protest by the Argentine ambassador to UK demanding that all annual celebrations on 5th November should cease immediately as they infringe the human rights of the Faucus familly.
Wow! This could become a burning issue diplomatically

    A few comments...

The Americans seemed to have misbehaved first, so the retaliation was perhaps understandable...
At least, the French did finally give technical assistance regarding the Exocet missiles to the UK, which according to historians was critical.
The current American president seems about as friendly with the UK as he's with France, Germany and Brazil... Supposedly strong American allies.

I remember the Churchill statue being ejected by the White house when Obama first took office...

Why does everyone have to be so sensitive, to what I thought was humorous as well?

it was a dishevelled joke that was interpreted by some who have no sense of humour,
    rather childish actually,

Do you not realise the Holy Loch was a US Polaris nuclear submarine base....at any one time there were 2,000 Yanks stationed here...they were here since the 60's
Lots of Yanks married local lassies and stayed when the base closed and lots had already retired here...
The place is full of Yanks....

A nice gesture in easy times, I agree.

After 9/11 we went to war with the US in Iraq, it was their time of need and we stood by them. During the Falklands war they did absolutely nothing to help us because they were worried about their latino vote. We could have easily said the same in middle east due to our muslim vote.

I like America and their people but politically the facts are clear, that this is a one way friendship and it always has been.

Caspar Weinberger who was the Defence Secretary at the time was the leader of the group called the ‘Atlanticists’ who believed that America should support her closest NATO ally and it would send a clear message that America did not support brutal and aggressive dictators. His staunch support later earned him a British Knighthood. He provided the United Kingdom with all the equipment she required during the war. Ranging from submarine detectors to the latest missiles. All this was done very discreetly. His actions led to divisions amongst Reagan’s staff. Whilst Weinberger claimed that he has received authorization from Ronald Reagan to provide covert support to the UK, others disagreed. Admiral Dennis Blair was asked by Snow if he was aware of the Reagan’s consent. He said ‘no’ and that there were too many secrets in the administration. Alexander Haig who was charged with mediating the dispute between Britain and Argentina also stated that he did not believe that Reagan authorized the covert supply of weapons. This, he said, was due to Reagan’s administration being a ‘loose ship’ with a ‘flawed system’ of conducting policy. When Snow asked Haig if he thought Reagan was responsible for the flawed system, he responded by stating that it was not Reagan’s fault but the fault of his staff.

The UK needs to spend more time thinking about how it may be more useful to the US rather than wasting its time celebrating past attacks against us. For instance, what is the UK going to do to oppose the aggression of the Russian Federation? Its present policy of doing nothing is not acceptable.

While it may seem like semantics to you, the US celebrates the birth of a nation as opposed to the war with England. Otherwise we would be celebrating other wars and we do not.
