The Guarani tribes that lived in South America in the 17th century used to play a sport similar to soccer when the Jesuits arrived to establish their missions, claims a video based on historical documents released by Paraguay’s Secretary for Culture. Entitled “The Guaranies invented soccer,” the video collects findings made by anthropologists who studied the Jesuits’ legacy in the country. Read full article

Football had been around a lot earlier than that, there are documents recording games in 13th century England and in the 14th Century The Lord Mayor of London tried to ban it because of the high level of injuries and it caused a massive distraction for apprentices who should be working.

Let the Guaranis, the Jesuits, and now the Paraguayan Secretary for Culture, claim whatever they want....the fact that by their own admission, the game they played did not have goals, says it all.....Not soccer.
But then again, what Brazil played during the World Cup, wasn't soccer either....it was a game played by 11 overpaid, spoiled nincompoops, who have more money than brains, and despite the 7 x 1 loss to Germany , still think they are the best in the world.....Their struggle this last week, to beat both Colombia and Ecuador, by 1 x 0, just proves they aren't...

Strange article...have they never read this.....
“The first written evidence of a football match came in about 1170, when William Fitzstephen wrote of his visit to London, ”After dinner all the youths of the city goes out into the fields for the very popular game of ball.“
    or this....
”In 1314, Edward II, then the King of England, said about a sport of football and the use of footballs, “certain tumults arising from great footballs in the fields of the public, from which many evils may arise.”

I am sure people have been kicking vaguely spherical objects about since humans walked upright. It is quite a natural and enjoyable thing to do.

However it was the English who first codified the rules of football that world knows today. So in reality only that game can be called Football.
The article clearly states 'similar to football'. Not Football then.

Seems like a publicity stunt to me. Bit of fun, good PR etc
    Good luck to them!
