Full article 26 comments

The leaders of the main UK parties have made a plea for a vote against Scottish independence, as they campaigned north of the border ahead of the referendum. Prime Minister David Cameron said he would be “heartbroken” in the event of a “Yes” vote, while Labor leader Ed Miliband said the case for the Union came from the “head, heart and soul”. How can it be a “fair act of self-determination”, when the party tasked to organizing it is using its entire apparatus to get everyone AGAINST it???

    Only in upside own UK.

Were the Spanish doing this in Catalonia, letting them vote but putting such monumental pressure to vote no, they would be crying and insulting Madrid and labelling it as a meddler and anti-democratic.

    PATHETIC.

I'm not bothered either way. Im happy for the scots to stay and would in a way prefer that, only due to feeling like they are my kin. But if they feel they need to go then good luck.

I hope they vote to leave.

England will never have a socialist labour government
England will have all those Standard life, lloyds and RBS jobs
England will have all those ship-building and disproportionate government jobs
England will have relieved itself of the massive Scottish benefits bill

Yes, for the next 10 years the income from North Sea oil will be lost...or at least until we can organise a referendum for the Shetlands to leave Scotland and rejoin the Union...whichever is sooner.

    Yay!!!

    FOLLOW THE MONEY.
A Yes vote is forever not just the next five years so this is really about those who are children today and those not yet born - they will be the future taxpayers and whatever is decided they will HAVE to pay.
Scotland if it votes YES will not be 'independent' because:
    1. Bank of last resort - ENGLAND.
    2. Laws and Directives that MUST be obeyed - EU.
    3. The EU will DEMAND their share of the money FIRST even before you buy a Scottish Health Service bedpan - at Scottish rates not UK rates of borrowing interest.
Separate but definitely NOT independent. Scotland won't even be able to decide what hoovers or hair dryers they can buy and certainly not who can and will have free and easy access to live and even NOT work but claim benefits in Scotland.
it is clear that the Scottish people feel neglected and financially downtrodden, but the economic data for the last 30 years clearly show this is not the case. The amount of money spent per head of population for Scotland is much higher than for the rest of the UK! And to date remains so.
Here is spending on Scotland versus the UK per head of population.

Spending on Agriculture fisheries and forestry, 219% higher, Enterprise economic-development 196.25% higher, housing and community amenities 165% higher, recreation culture and religion 144% higher, benefits and tax credits £1500 higher per head of population than the UK. The Institute of Fiscal Studies will verify these figures.
The Scots have not been forgotten or neglected, the UK understands that the demographics of Scotland means they have a greater number of older people as a percentage of the population and therefore require more funding for community care and benefits.”

Scottish independence would certainly be good for the rest of the country. Getting rid of their MPs (two-thirds of them Labour) and the expense of subsidizing most of what goes on there would be a great help. To the politicians, controlling more land, more people and more tax revenue, means more power, but the Scots are more of a burden on the rest of the UK, than an asset.

I have no problem with self determination. If the Scots want to leave the union then that is their choice. I do object to the outright lies and manipulation by Salmond who is only really interested in getting his name in the history books, not the future prosperity of Scotland. He is using typical nationalist clap-trap. I am glad some of his more outrageous claims have been countered with hard facts.

The Catalans seem much more interested in independence than the Scots...Human marches of millions in Barcelona, the SNP dont gather that kind of supporrt on the streets.
Cataluña gives far more to Spain and the case with Scotland and the UK is opposite...

What does Madrid fear with giving the Catalans a referendum

Because it's true. However, I do give credit to England for allowing one of its provinces to vote on this.

Much better than the Australians who ruthlessly crushed Western Australia's freedom bid.

I'm all for an independent Scotland if that is their wish. I do however find it comical that so many express their desire of independence as an attack on the UK as a whole or the rUK.

Leaving the UK to spite England is like cutting your nose off to spite your face. England/rUK will continue on without Scotland. People should support Scottish independence (whether Scottish or not) because they believe that is the best for Scotland not because they think it is an embarrassment or denigration of the UK.

On many levels I support Scottish independence but on many levels I don't. I see the logic and benefits in both. Scotland will continue either way. In independence it will become a small periphery country of the EU with a world presence and impact akin to Ireland or Czech Republic. Neither is a bad thing. However as part of the UK it sits at a totally different table, one of only a handful.

Each has its benefits and each has its drawbacks.

That “small periphery country” has the power to decide the future of a country 40 times as large and four times as populous.

“Much better than the Australians who ruthlessly crushed Western Australia's freedom bid.”

Haha yeah ruthlessly crushed. London said no and that was the end.

Seven pieces of legislation would fix any problems cause by Scotland's independence. Hardly deciding our future. However not even that would be needed as the rUK would be the continuing state.

The more words you learn Nostrils the less you seem to understand.

@1, 15, 17. It would be an idea if you had some idea what you're talking about or even included some referents.
Who is 'organising it'? Where is this 'province'? Which country is 40 times as large and four times as populous? Perhaps because it's beyond the next street!

Mr salmon yesterday complained that the treasury leaked things abt the TSB/LLOYDS etc, and that was illegal,

was Mr salmon the chosen one correct, or was he lying,

    consider this,
nothing was said, all was quiet, Scotland gets independence and half was happy,
then BANG the 3 above all pull out and jobs are lost,

the Scottish people demand that they should have been told,

Mr salmon in his anti English defence would then accuse Westminster of hiding this truth from the Scottish people, and its our fault,

I say, the people should have been told, they have now been told and Mr salmon was wrong.
    just my opinion.

20 True but when big businesses like shell, virgin etc come out in favour of the no
vote EMOTIONAL SPEECHES like those of Jim Sillars can easily increase the
yes vote, especially when Sillars says that they (businesses) are and I quote:
-the heads of these companies are rich men, in cahoots with the rich English
Tory Prime minister- end of quote; ordinary Scotsmen and women will like
    these speeches.
Emotional speeches can have a huge effect on people like those of Adolf
Hitler who captivated millions with his passionate speeches......ummmmm

JIM SILLARS' RANT IN FULL [part] SNP
The No camp fear mongering has had an effect on me – instead of retiring on 19th. September, I am staying in. This referendum is about [ power ], and when we get a Yes majority, we will use that power for a day of reckoning with BP and the banks.
The heads of these companies are rich men, in cahoots with English Tory Prime Minister, to keep Scotland’s poor
democracy will come to an end with a Yes.
BP, in an independent Scotland, will need to learn the meaning of nationalisation, in part or in whole, as it has in other countries who have not been as soft as we have forced to b
. If it wants into the ‘monster fields’ in the areas west of Shetland, it will have to learn to bend the knee to a greater power –[ us, ] the sovereign people of Scotland. We will be the masters of the oil fields, not BP or any other of the majors. If Bob Dudley thinks this is mere rhetoric, just let him wait. It is sovereign power that counts. We will have it, he will not.
    As for the Bankers.
the profits, will be over. You will be split between retail and investment, and if your greed takes the latter down, there will be no rescue. You believe in the market, in future you will live with its discipline. Fail will mean failure.
As for Standard Life, it will be required by new employment laws to give two years warning of any redundancies, and reveal to the trade unions its financial reasons for relocation to any country outside of Scotland, and the costs involved.
As for John Lewis, the question is whether the senior management consulted the ‘partners’ or took instructions from Cameron? Another question our supine BBC did not ask.they will be punished .
What kind of people do these companies think we are? They will find out.
We will be in charge if the SNP wins, he will say.
