Uruguay's president Jose Mujica said the latest world events show that Europe 'has lost clout' in global affairs, and has lost strength as 'peace mediator', and this role could be “much better performed by Latin America”. Read full article

PS once you have achieved world peace can you go on to cure cancer. Obama promised to do it in his inauguration speech but the lazy bugger has done sweet FA so far.

Actually I am in 2 minds as to if I want you to cure cancer or end hunger after the world peace bit. You choose.

Pepe, there's more to making peace than just shooting your mouth off.

Sometimes you have to put your money where your mouth is and send peace-keeping troops and even peace-ENFORCEMENT troops.

Either way it's a dangerous job, and people get killed.

But let's not just dismiss you out of hand. Come on Pepe, just what is your answer for world peace? Burying your head in the sand and hoping all the 'bad' people just disappear?

Because I guarantee that people like IS don't care about diplomacy, or foreign policy. They don't even care about world opinion, which is why they advertise their murdering and ethnic cleansing.

So tell us, oh learned Uruguayan leader, just HOW do you bring about peace in the Middle East? Or Africa? Or Eastern Europe, for that matter?

    We're waiting...

What a wanker. Greatest claim to fame? His workers grow chrysanthemums. Not him. Can you imagine him bending over to plant? One long, loud fart. Would that be for pest control? I'm with Briton. Where are the Uruguayan troops facing down the Russians in Ukraine? How about the Uruguayan navy vessels patrolling North Korea and intervening between the Chinese and the Japanese in the South China Sea? As Briton says, will Uruguay be fighting the IS? The National Navy has 2 frigates and 3 patrol boats. The Uruguayan air force has 9 combat aircraft. Scary. You can see how countries all around the world would be frightened that Uruguay might send its forces. But, as of 2001, Uruguay does have 24,000 ground troops. (Britain has over 247,000). But it does have 78 tanks. (Britain has over 400). The only 'clout' Mujica has is if he overbalances when sitting down. Correa and Morales are too busy trying to subdue their own populations. Rousseff is a lost cause. Bachelet has missed the boat. She's about 8 years out of date. And what should we say about Kirchner. She was out of date the day she was expelled from something's birth canal. Or, more likely, did she come from something's rectum? Why doesn't someone intelligent in argieland throw her in prison and then string her up. Never mind breaking her neck. Just leave her to strangle for 4 or 5 days. A very important 4 or 5 days. She'd probably 'dump' several Mujicas.

I need to correct you on a few minor points. First, Pete is an old nearly senile Marxist who has been running his country's economy into the ground and has no real international influence. Saying that, he did call Cristina an old hag and has semi-publicly made several nasty comments about her government. Admittedly he's an idiot, but he quietly allows flights between Uruguay and the FI, as well as shipments by water. All quietly, while publicly siding with the Argentine pretension over their Mythical Islas. ...sí Cristina, then he pinches her in the ass...

The two Uruguayan “frigates” are very old, lovingly maintained and their armaments are from the Korean War era, but their engines are completely overhauled and up to factory specifications. I'm not saying that the Uruguayan fleet could defeat the Argentines, but they might be able to fire a round or two and frighten the Argentine navy back into port.

As far as the Uruguayan Army, they are well respected in the UN peacekeeping forces, but their tanks belong in museums and I think that even the Argentine TAM tank could overrun thee country, IF they could find a way to get the TAMs across the river.

Finally, despite our Socialist president, Chile is not 8 years behind.

Why is it that SA has sooo little in military hardware? Because, unlike Europeans, SA doesn't have that State eat State mentality and that also applies to the US. SA does not have that colonialist sentiment to go out and invade the world. Russia is at it again, buzzing Canadian ships, feigning attacks on Alaska, annexing Crimea this year, Georgia a few years ago. The Germans still have some Nazi sympathizers in government. Brits still holding on to the last vestiges of the Empire where the sun never set. SA has been relatively peaceful.

#13 - From the Democratic Republic of Congo to Israel’s borders, to Haiti, Iraq and Afghanistan, Latin American militaries have been involved in foreign operations for decades. Almost always, they act under the flag of the United Nations or, regarding Afghanistan and Iraq, representing a coalition of international forces. Unsurprisingly, in Latin America (as in other parts of the world) peacekeeping and coalition-type military arrangements are based on a combination of “good Samaritan” sentiments with a hearty a dose of politically motivated real politik.

    17. O Come on! Even you after to admit what Pepe said was funny. If the answer to any International Political question is Latin America then your obviously asking the wrong question. Generally speaking Latin America is economically illiterate, militarily impotent and politically incompetent. It's even demeaning to the Brits to have Argentina as an enemy. It's like a professional boxer being threatened by a chubby 8 year old.

    @17 USAF

The WHOLE of Latin America IS a colonial situation - don't forget that.

SA is NOT relatively peaceful. MOST SA countries have been, and still are in some cases, fighting civil wars. Democracy is a fragile thing in many SA countries, and there are an awful lot of SA countries that CLAIM territory from one or more of their neighbours (cough *Argentina* cough).

Peace keeping is all good and well, but what if both sides ignore the peace keepers? Or worse, what if they attack, kidnap and behead the peace keepers?

You see peace keeping ONLY works when both sides actually want peace, but don't trust the other side enough to go through the process alone.

Tell me, why hasn't the UN sent peace keepers into Syria? Or Iraq? Tell me, oh learn'ed one?

Is it because the fanatics in those countries would love to get their hands on infidel soldiers (that includes South American ones too) and cut their heads off on international TV.

The truth is that total peace can never be achieved. The reason is that war, fighting and killing is a fundamental part of human nature.

Homo Sapiens have been around for about 20,000 years, and they have been fighting since the 1st year. For mates, for land, for resources, for religious beliefs and for political beliefs.

I doubt that a bunch of belligerent people from South America can come up with a perfect solution that is going to make ALL people around the world look at each other and say 'Hey we're wrong about our (political beliefs, religion etc...), lets all be friends'.

And while peace keeping is a honourable, and dangerous job, it DOESN'T STOP THE FIGHTING if they don't want to stop. Only PEACE ENFORCEMENT can do that. In other words forcing peace on others by imposing blockades (sanctions), no fly zones, and even attacking one or other of the sides.

The alternative is to do NOTHING (like SA does) and watch whilst thousands, if not millions are murdered.

You see, no easy answer at all, is there?

“How Many Divisions does the Pope of Rome Have?”

The question comes from Josif Vissarionovich Dzugashvilli, when he was already known as STALIN, former seminarian of Homiletics at Tiflis, Georgia. It strikes me as definitely unfair the omission of the Pope´s answer:

“TELL MY SON JOSEPH THAT HE´LL FIND MY DIVISIONS IN HEAVENS”

“Such a pity there is no god or heaven or hell then. Now answer CD2 properly, please. ”

I frankly admire the battleship armor quality of your convictions. Be kind enough to accept that other people are less fortunate. Now, if I must answer CD2 PROPERLY, I may say: As men of our “modern” time, we (even now!) rather resemble donkeys tied to the old venerable Hegelian noria: “ WHAT IS REAL, IS RATIONAL; WHAT IS RATIONAL IS REAL” (a one-to-one correspondence, and no exceptions). From here, we are easily dumped into atheism. But at this point, we must be aware that CD2 question (in fact, STALIN´s) lacks ANY sense, for them as for all pitiful “agnostics” . (we cannot think in the Swiss Guard, right..?) BUT NOT FOR THE POPE...! ON THE CONTRARY, IT HAD PLENTY OF IT FOR HIM...!. Because Tertullian´s spirit has always been alive in the Church: “CREDO QUIA ABSURDUM EST” (I believe because it is irrational). Even such an outstanding Father as St. Agustine recognized that MIRACLES, as temporary suspensions of natural laws, on Divine orders, had been essential for his conversion. Theologically, the Catholic Church is split into three parts, only one (the Militant) belonging to this world. The others are the Purgatorial and the Triumphant. And this MADNESS OF THE CROSS, after a two-thousand years navigation on History ´s seas, has finally got peace, gravely menaced, between Chile and Argentina through John Paul II and his Deputy, Cardinal Samoré. So, it seems that the Pope commands three divisions, but only one first-class. However, he did a really fine job in the Southern Cone. Please, compare it with your results in the Middle East, 70 years after the end of WW II , with all the paraphernalia of modern weapons.

I think it is accepted by nearly everyone that there is a god gene (or an inadequacy gene) that encourages the god delusion and makes those affected feel comfortable in the “knowledge” that “He” (why not “She”?) is ‘looking’ after them, but not unbelievers of course.

Those of us with a rational brain have long since realised that you need to look after yourself and we don’t have to fear ‘The Wrath Of God’, you know, the one that ‘loves’ us. The only reason the RCC is strong in SA is blindingly obvious: the lack of education and to some extent the lack of intelligence in the mass of the population. SA is the only part of the planet where the RCC still holds sway, even in the US people are waking up to reality and the charlatan practices of all the churches. A ‘strong’ church can so easily fall into the maw of the two faced politicians and become their tool as well as the kiddie fiddlers in dresses.

Let’s look at your final sentence and ask why should this be? The answer lies in religion, Islam. Islam is a bastardised form of Christianity dreamt up by ‘Allah’ through his paedophile prophet ‘Muhammad’, urine and faeces be upon him. The rising idiocy that is political correctness in western countries emasculates the people who are sent to deal with the failure of the politicians: the military, who are not allowed to use their powerful weapons due to the bleeding heart Christians. We all remember when Saddam’s army of death was trying to run away from its failure in Kuwait and the videos of skeletonised soldiers after the fires had raged through them bought howls from the US believers to ‘show mercy’ to these murdering bastards! These are the same people who love the Terminator films which show millions of bare to the bone human skulls to which I am going to apply a word thought up by an ‘educated’ Christian: hypocrites.

It is clear to anyone how ISIS is going to be dealt with if we really want to stop these religious nutters: kill them all.

    To @32 ilsen
You offered me, on your own will, that “generalist” argument. In dealing with
it: “the Abrahamric religions” (and this statement, implicitly means: ALL OF THEM) “have caused much pain and grief for the world” . Then, if I ask “HOW?”, your common answer for all three would be: BECAUSE OF THEIR FANATICISM AND INTOLERANCE, that bred many “religious wars” (not too risky a guess, right..?) . Formerly, however, you had enthusiastically adhered to ChrisR ´s opinions about the inanity of all Churches, and on the necessity of the extermination of ALL the ISLAMIC “nutters” (on the basis of our rational brain advises..!) . BUT NOT A SINGLE MENTION of JEWISH “nutters” have been made, and that may be a reason to supply ISRAEL with all kind of weapons during many years. So, this particular “Abrahamric” religion enjoys a special status. If it have caused “much pain and grief for the world”, as you state in your “generalist” comment, it has been with U.K. and U.S.A.´s blessings

“Go back to England and go pay your taxes so that Prince Harry can lay with prostitutes in Las Vegas on your dime.”

Mmmm. Where to start and how can I possibly deal with your stunning wit? Firstly I pay taxes in both Uruguay and in ‘England’ which happens to be the UK.

Secondly do you really think Prince Harry needs to PAY for girls? You really are comical (funny) if you think that. BTW it’s not a dime in ‘England’ you uneducated argie moron: the currency is the British Pound, the fractions of which are pence at 100 = £1.
