The beginning of a turbulent week for Argentina's money exchange market with the informal or 'blue' dollar climbing to 15,15 Argentine Pesos, while the official rate was up one cent to 8,45 Pesos in Buenos Aires banks and foreign exchange offices. Read full article

Disclaimer & comment rulesCan anyone help? I need to find a way of sending money into Argentina (specifically Neuquen) without having to pay the official rate. The family are in need of money. After having a frank conversation with them last night, things are much worse than I realised as they are just slipping from being able to pay their way to not having enough cash to buy food, petrol etc. Does anyone know how I can do this?
Sep 23rd, 2014 - 11:03 am - Link - Report abuse 0Tell them to find a local business or someone who has money you can trust wanting to get it out of the country. Then you deposit into their account outside of Argentina and they give your family the cash.
Sep 23rd, 2014 - 12:12 pm - Link - Report abuse 0They must know of a local cueva an usually they can help, but charge 3-5%
@1 It will require a bit of research first and then a bit of setting up but google satoshitango. you'll end up getting a rate of about $14 after all the fees. I have been doing this the last 4 months
Sep 23rd, 2014 - 12:20 pm - Link - Report abuse 01. I used to use a guy in BA where I would wire into his US account and then go pick up the U$ after the wire was confirmed.
Sep 23rd, 2014 - 12:46 pm - Link - Report abuse 0He charged only 2%, highway robbery but it was the only way for me to move large amounts of u$ into Arg without a problem. 50K+.
If they just need food you should buy it on discovirtual or coto and have it delivered to them.
This is going to get much much worse.
Its not going to be a nice Christmas in Argentina this year.
Thanks guys, much appreciated. I'd prefer to give them the money as frankly it is less demeaning than having your son-in-law buying you food from the other side of the world. We will be there at Christmas so I expect I'll be taking half of my xmas bonus over with me. That should keep them going for a year...
Sep 23rd, 2014 - 01:16 pm - Link - Report abuse 0Without sounding too negative I hope you can fly the at year end. My wife and I have concerns about being able to get there after the new year because if Aerolinas is the only ones flying then we certainly will not be flying.
Sep 23rd, 2014 - 01:50 pm - Link - Report abuse 0I really wonder how they are getting jet fuel and parts. I wouldn't fly Aerolinas for any amount of money.
Sep 23rd, 2014 - 02:11 pm - Link - Report abuse 0Fly to Chile and then hop over on LAN.

Sep 23rd, 2014 - 02:31 pm - Link - Report abuse 0@6-9 Thanks guys. We're flying with BA so i expect that they will def still be going as they are always full at the time of year. As for AA, I've used them on a regular basis in Argentina and they have been fine. In fact (and in my opinion), they have been better since they were nationalised. Yes there are issues with timing but these were mosr beforehand. As for safety, I can't really comment. In a way, this should be expected as if you are subsidising a company like that to the tune of US$2m per day then should should see some uplift in quality. Having said that, I wouldn't say that the money has been well spent.

Sep 23rd, 2014 - 03:06 pm - Link - Report abuse 0Reckon the RGs have dollar-sniffing dogs yet?
Peso should be over 16 by eom, I wonder when people will start upping the eoy estimate, 20/1 seems overly optimistic.
Sep 23rd, 2014 - 04:53 pm - Link - Report abuse 0BCRA can not maintain the differential for long it 80% now.
My guess is they'll try a huge devaluation right before xmas and liberally hand out worthless Pesos as year end bonuses.
Watch for another forced Peso exchange.
They're getting desperate

I would have thought they will realise how lucky they are having a wealthy son-in-law who can help them in the circumstances.
It's not their fault if the country is going down the pan because of TMBOA et al BUT they must be that desperate by now not to the luxury of worrying about any bruised feelings they may or may not have, just thankful there is someone they know they can trust to help them.
Remember I said the pesos would be at 15.85 end of this week.

Whats your guesstimate?
Welsh Wizard, sorry to hear of your familys great difficulties. I can only think of mere plattitudes. None of us has ill will towards the Argentinian peoples. But the Argy government, well you know...

@18 Definitely the Asado! He could feed a small village.
Sep 23rd, 2014 - 07:30 pm - Link - Report abuse 0When I first lived in Argentina I remember there was a truck accident on the highway. It was carrying cows. There were people hacking at the dead cows carrying away the meat. All being shown on the news. Bloody people running away with as much as they could carry.
Sep 23rd, 2014 - 07:32 pm - Link - Report abuse 0It was horrific.
According to the budget, the government allocated the next $ 1,634 million year-on, marking an increase of 15.9% over the $ 1.41 billion that were planned for this year.
Sep 24th, 2014 - 06:58 am - Link - Report abuse 0Not enough hospitals, schools and sewers to meet the demand for basic state services. However, the national budget is much more flexible when it comes to football.

@13 Hi Chris. They do and are wholly against accepting anything. When we are there, I can't pay for anything...ever. So, for me, it is only really paying them back for their continuous generosity. It is just so defeating though. Here is someone who is at the top of her tree professionally and she is paid marginally more than those teaching in secondary school. The system is so wrong and really does not reward those who have worked hard all their life...it really is heartbreaking.

If the Argentine government thinks the whole world is hostile towards them, maybe they should consider why?
Sep 24th, 2014 - 02:35 pm - Link - Report abuse 024. Their NPD prevents that.
Sep 24th, 2014 - 02:49 pm - Link - Report abuse 0@25 They can never take responsibility for anything. Did you read the excuse of that pikey armed robber who's failed attempted robbery of a Canadian tourist went viral? The one the police let go? Apparently he was only committing armed robbery to buy a birthday present for his child. Awwww. Because every child wants an armed robber for a father and for them to spend the majority of their childhood in jail. It beggars belief as it is revealed that he has already done time for another armed robbery. I don't suppose that was his fault either.
Sep 24th, 2014 - 03:10 pm - Link - Report abuse 0The fact that the entire world is hostile towards you is not mutually exclusive with being responsible for what happens in your country.
Sep 24th, 2014 - 03:16 pm - Link - Report abuse 0Both can and do occur in Argentina.

Sep 24th, 2014 - 03:47 pm - Link - Report abuse 026. yeah maybe we should feel sorry for him.
One of my Arg friends posted this on FB
It is encouraging to see him condemned so roundly by his countrymen. He did jail time for armed robbery 14 years ago but how many times has he done this since and not been filmed? I would guess at every time he needs a fix.

Sep 26th, 2014 - 06:46 pm - Link - Report abuse 0I don't think it's just random robbery. I would not be surprised if the government is using Vatayon Militante to terrorize random foreigners.
