Gibraltar's football association has announced it will appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport after FIFA rejected its bid to become a member. Sepp Blatter said the “FA of Gibraltar cannot be accepted as a member of FIFA” because it contravened the world governing body's statutes regarding independent territories,

    Slightly confused here,
Are they saying that if you are not a sovereign independent country, you cannot join UEFA ??

Poor Spain still hasn't recovered from Gibraltar outsmarting them and joining UEFA.

Gibraltar might not win many games but they are still playing. And Spain can't stop them.

The FIFA rules were changed in 2004 to include the text:

“In this context, the expression “country” shall refer to an independent state
    recognised by the international community”

This was done partially to exclude Gibraltar, but also Kosovo. It ignores that 14 current FIFA members (excluding the 'home' nations) are not independent states.

And, crucially, it is a change made 8 years after Gibraltar applied to FIFA.

As the CAS ruling re: UEFA was that Gibraltar's application had to be accepted because it was eligible at the time of application (UEFA also changed its rules - in 2001 and in 2006 - to try and retrospectively exclude Gibraltar) - then it seems likely that they will tell FIFA precisely the same thing.

All this will do is stall it a few years. Unfortunately, that is not long enough for Spain to grow up into a mature state, so we'll have to expect the same lip-pouting and foot-stamping when it happens.

Oh, and Aussiesunshine, one question: when are you playing the Netherlands again?

#13: Did you know that Spain's first ever international match was against Gibraltar?

Besides: we know we won't win many games. We have a population of 30,000. But what is really funny is that mighty Spain is too frightened to play against us and has asked UEFA to make sure we are kept away from them in qualifiers.

Of course - Spain is only interested when it can pick on schoolboys

So brave that, at the recent NATO summit, when the real countries discussed what to do about Ukraine, ISIS etc, feeble, little, playground bully Spain wasn't even invited to the meetings. Was it?

Are you two seriously suggesting that Gibraltar should be excluded because they're not as good as neighbouring countries with 1000 times the population? So you believe San Marino, Andora, and Cambodia should also be excluded from FIFA then?

Spain doesn't want to play to Gibraltar because they are scared that doing so would be de facto acknowledgement that Gibraltar is not in fact Spanish. The Spanish FA (and in fact the entire Spanish state) are behaving like children. Let us know when you've grown up.

It's really sad, you just don't get the spirit of the game do you? Of course your nation has demonstrated this with its cheating and political stunts, and Spain with its bullying tactics.

Since joining UEFA the Gibraltar team have had 3 losses, 2 draws (including against Slovakia, FIFA ranked 45), 1 win. Which I think is fairly respectable for the smallest nation in UEFA.

“british did not invent anything” perhaps we didn't invent kicking an object around, but we codified the modern game and made it the sport it is today.

It must drive you mad knowing that you and your Spanish “friends” will never get your hands on the Falklands or Gibraltar respectively. In your impotence all you can do is denigrate and insult two nations, that despite their small size, provide their inhabitants with a much better standard of living and opportunities than your nations can.

How come the Faroe islands are allowed to compete? They are still attached to Denmark. And Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland and England are not independent countries either.

    Blatter won't last forever.

    Gibraltar's team will prevail.

When Catalonia become independent they will require to compete separately from Spain.

    Bring it on.

why you opine about football is a mystery.
you have never set foot in a football field in your entire life, you don´t even have a pitch in the islets, but suddenly all of you become experts...lol

gibraltar and the falklands are not qualified to be in the fifa because: they are not nations, they are just 3rd class colonies, and most important, because they don´t have the slightest clue about playing.

anyway a match falklands vs gibraltar would be the funniest thing ever.
not to be played on a pitch but in a circus, of course.

Oh Paul, you tried at least.

Gibraltar is a member of UEFA, and thus should qualify for membership of FIFA. While it is not a sovereign state recognised by the UN that condition on membership in both organisations was only brought in after Gibraltar applied, hence why CAS ruled they should be permitted to join UEFA, and will presumably do the same thing with FIFA. This despite the Spanish FAs desperate belligerence.

“because they don´t have the slightest clue about playing.”

Having recently defeated a UEFA/FIFA member (with 15 times the population) and drawn against a top 50 FIFA ranked team I think they know how the game is played.

“you have never set foot in a football field in your entire life, you don´t even have a pitch in the islets, but suddenly all of you become experts...lol”

Still under the foolish belief that everyone who supports the Falklands is an Islander? I have never been to the Islands, I have lived most of my life in the UK (specifically Yorkshire, Durham, Cambridge, Edinburgh, Oxford, London, and Sussex); the home of modern football.

“they are not nations, they are just 3rd class colonies, ”

That have a better standard of living that Argentina by far.

There is very little reason why the Gibraltar FA and even the Falkland Islands FA should be excluded from FIFA, the inhabitants of these territories, are, as far as I know, not guaranteed to be eligible for any other FA. By excluding these territories you are excluded people from Sport, not based on ability, but geo-politics, which is wrong.

Face it, your attitude, like that of your government towards the Falklands, and Spain towards Gibraltar, is simply childish spite. All because you can't have them. Pathetic.

the islets and that rock cannot be part of the fifa because they don´t have entity.

it would be as if the seleccionado de buenos aires wants to participate in a fifa championship.
    they can´t. period.

You two seem incapable of a logical argument.

“the islets and that rock cannot be part of the fifa because they don´t have entity.
    got it?”

There are 24 teams in FIFA which are not recognised by the UN as independent entities. The closest parallel are the Faroe Islands which share a relationship with Denmark similar to that of Gibraltar to the UK, and have a comparable population (50k vs. 30k). If the Faroe Islands can be members then I can see no reason why Gibraltar or even the Falklands Islands could be. Now, FIFA and UEFA have changed their rules relatively recently to exclude new application from states without recognition. However, Gibraltar, who's FA predates the existence of FIFA/UEFA, applied before the rule change. Hence CAS ruled that they should be admitted to UEFA, and this is likely to happen with FIFA.

“it would be as if the seleccionado de buenos aires wants to participate in a fifa championship.”

No, are you really stupid to believe this analogy is correct. The inhabitants of Buenos Aires are covered by the Argentine FA (regrettably a FIFA member), neither the Falklands nor Gibraltar are represented by a FIFA FA, though both deserve to.

    Do you get it yet?

    Sunshine

It doesn't matter what the UN says. I stand by my comment. You are too ill-educated to understand the difference between nations, states and nation-states.

It doesn't matter what their status at the UN is. The UN doesn't recognise or adjudicate on whether someone is a nation-stste or not, its members do.

The Falklands and Gibraltar are both nations. They are both states. They aren't nation-states.... yet.

    Paul
I never said the Falkland Islands can or should be part of FIFA. Stop making stuff up. But they do have what you call football. That's where you were wrong.... again.
