We watched the debate on GLOBO last night.

I am skeptical of the accuracy and independence of the so called “poll ” results. No one is talking about anyone but Marina Silva.

Marina Silva pointed out that of all the candidates presented, only she and Dilma had an actual plan to present for governing the country.

I also watched the Presidential debate on TV last night, and am amazed how the public in general does not see through DumboAss Dilma's lies and attempts to cover up her incompetence......but then, watching the news this morning, you see reporters interviewing people in the street, and most of them haven't a clue as to what the candidates they will be voting for are meant to do in Congress, they can't name anything that the PT has done for them, other than incessantly repeat how Brazil has gone ahead because of the handouts - to a few million lazy buggers - in other words, they are unable to think for themselves, but yet have the power to vote. It's the same as giving a driver's license to someone who can't drive.

    Jack,
its akin to the Scots giving the vote in the Referendum to children.
In many senses I found the under-educated Brasilians to vote like children - offer them candy and they will vote for you.

    Castortroy,
you should know by now that my partner is black.

But I have observed - over the years - the way in which the P.T. use the Balsa Familia to develop a 'socialist' dependency culture amongst the less-educated.
Skills that used to exist in every household have been lost - replaced by the weekly family outing to the supermarket. The collapse of stable, largely self-sufficient, rural economies.

And it is not the 'basket' of staples that is being bought with their social support - like in the UK, it is multipacks of beer and Cola, and higher-priced sugar-rich convenience foods.

Is there any wonder that with socialist-instigated dependency culture (notice I didn't say 'development') there is a rapid escalation of obesity - and the diseases that go with it - across all family members.
I saw it every weekend at the supermarket tills, on the street and at the beach.

Obesity is worn as a 'badge of honour', with no stigma.
Under-informed (and, in particular, under-educated) they feel they have 'made it' - without understanding that it is largely with other people's money through through other people's taxes.

If only socialism took account of human nature ... and the health-risks of 'Coca Cola' industries.

    @9 Geoff
You nailed it. While the idea behind the 'Bolsa Familia' handout is noble, the way it's administered, isn't. It is supposed to be a temporary measure to help people get back on their feet, not a programme which - through bad supervision - not only permits, but stimulates the recipients to sit back and see it as early retirement, many without ever having worked a day in their lives.
As such, it's become a political tool, as no politician will dare suggest that it needs to be cleaned up. The day that the majority who work get fed up supporting those who don't, and decide that they too, are going to go on the dole, that's when the well dries up. As Margaret Thatcher wisely put it, “socialism will work for as long as the OTHER people's money lasts”....
The only people who don't agree with this, are those who are content to sponge off others.

I just heard on the BBC that Dilma has most likely won the first round.

    Yup, Ilsen,
but Neves can pick up some of Silva's votes in the final round.
It's a pity that Lula came in hard in the last few days - and it's unforgivable that he was not indited in the mensalao trials last year, his support from prison would have been much weaker.

Neves, and the “ Neves party ” as it is now being called, did very well. 34 % ro President Dilma's 40 %

Neves can easily cut a deal for the Marina Silva votes ( 21 % ) including those of the evangelicals.

28 October run-off is coming fast. President Dilma, not being religious, or a regular church-attendee, should start praying.

    So the polls were wrong!

    Who'd have thunk it?

We'll soon see what the voting polls will say: they are the only ones which count.

    Hi Chris R-

Yes, evidently the PT didn't put enough into the pollsters' pockets to trick, ..... I mean to say convince the voters..

There are clear indications that Marina will probably side with Aécio for the 2nd round. Although I haven't heard any public statement made explicitely to that effect, right after the 1st round results were divulged, Marina's running-mate (vice-president) set the tone for the 2nd round, when he said that he and Marina would never be able to forget all the filthy lies that Dilma and the PT propaganda had told about them during the course of the campaign.......If that means anything, there'll be a fair chance to get rid of fat arse Dilma.
