From the story, it sounds like the 700
Argentine soldiers outnumbered the Royal Marines 10 to 1, but still felt they had to kill them in their sleep at the barracks.

10 to 1 or not - the Argentines were not the 'superior' force.

It's worth reading http://www.naval-history.net/NAVAL1982FALKLANDS.htm to get an idea of not only how Naval Party 8901 was outnumbered, but of how British forces were generally outnumbered. Argie reinforcements 300-400 miles away, British reinforcements 8,000 miles away. And how the argies were outclassed and outfought. A particularly sad story for the Gurkhas as the argies ran too fast. I've always wondered why the UK didn't send contingents from the Grenadier Guards, the Coldstream Guards and the Irish Guards. All truly nasty bastards. The Royal Marines, of course, are truly nasty bastards in their own right. So pleased that Sergeant Major Muir got back with 42 Commando in time to teach argies what NOT to do to Royal Marines. I trust that he got considerable pleasure from gunning a number of argies down. Perhaps, being a Commando, he even managed to creep up behind a few and cut their throats. Slowly. Well done, Sergeant Major, in the best traditions of the Corps.

Maybe it was a simple seniority thing between the Guards.
Scots guards are the senior guards in the Houshold Div.

Regiment rivalry apart, it was a fantastic action by all involved and a constant reminder to the argies what will happen if they ever get themselves a navy (or con Brazil to 'help') and attack the islands once again.

It will never happen though. TDC may be arrogant and stupid, but are they THAT arrogant and stupid?

“Argentina: we won’t invade Falklands so military base should close”

Or in real Argy speak=, “We won't invade BECAUSE the military base is there.”

They have also said Falkland Islanders would be better off under Argentina than under the UK, but the big clue to the truth is that if you refuse to talk to the Islanders, and have to say this to the world's press instead of the people themselves, this indicates that you don't care whether the Islanders are better off or not, directly contradicting themselves.

What morons! (Ooops-isn't Moron an airbase in Argentina)?

    Totally agree pete,

    they just want a colony,

the difference being the islanders don't want to be Argentinian..
and that seem ok to me,

The two English flags, one of the governor's house and the other Moody Brooks, which were lowered by Argentine commandos, on April 2, are currently in Argentina (no kidding).

THE GOVERNOR'S HOUS FLAG: THIS SRE AT THE MUSEUM OF REGIMIENTO DE INFANTERIA DE MARINA IN PUERTO BELGRANO.

RESPECT TO THE MOODY BROOKS FLAG: Very recently, an Argentine journalist, present at the raising of the argentine flag at Moody Brooks, April 2, presented in television and for first time the English army flag, which was fluttered in MOODY BROOKS.

TEST THIS: (SEE THE MINUTE 1.45 IS AN EXCITING TIME FOR US, SOME TEARS OF PRIDE Y EMOTION ESCAPED FROM EYES OF MANY ARGENTINE, I included, I must admit)

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UMMKa9BRw8k

THAT FLAG IS VERY LARGE, MORE THAN TWO MTS. AND VERY HEAVY CANVAS

FOR US, THIS FLAG IS A NATIONAL HERITAGE AND NATIONAL PRIDE:

CURRENTLY BE DISCUSSED HOW TO DO WITH THE FLAG:
    ALTERNATIVES ARE:

RETURN IT TO ENGLISH (THE QUEEN)

RETURN IT TO THE ISLANDERS (FOR ME IS THE BEST OPTION SHOWS WILL OF DIALOGUE)

A technical point here. It is not the “English Flag” but the Union Flag representing the UK. The English flag is the cross of St.George, see this website
    englandforever.org/englands-flag.php#.VFISXhZtd94
“Tears of pride and emotion came as the flag was shown.”
An invasion by an overwhelming military force against a peaceful, lightly defended island was something to be proud of ?
This was the “peaceful action at Moody Brooks when the Argentinian forces tried to kill the British troops whom they thought were asleep in the barracks. The Argentinians claim was that they wanted to ”peacefully call on them to surrender”. Yes, I'm sure we believed that story !!
Anyway, all you got out of your invasion were many dead and injured and a couple of Flags along with the dislike of ARGENTINA by the Falkland Islanders and the distrust of your government by the British people.
    Was it worth it ?

Clyde, if you think that the tears and emotion, which I mentioned were due to acts of war or victims of war, you are wrong.

If they had, by the memory of sovereignty recovered this April 2, and a little over 2 months between the April 2 and June 14, my country might be, finally, a full country and happy .
This April 2, my country was one, and there seemed to be no difference to the people we had at side, whether they were military or civilian, or radical o Peronist, of left or right.

I was very young but I remember very clearly the joy of my people. Then the sovereignty was again lost and Argentina, since then, returned to do a country, incomplete and sad. And again we went back to have that sense of emptiness as a society.

So you see, for you, is impossible to understand the meaning of my words, which the Argentines, feel for the island (Falkland for you, for us Malvinas): It's not about economic, military or political issues.

UK, particularly England, is characterized as an industrial country and a financial power. You are “up” and they see us as a small country, which is needed to “punish” him for everything he is, according to your point of view.

Argentina will never be a full and happy country without Malvinas.

You may not know it, but the orders of the TOAS command, the April 2, was to recover the island, WITHOUT DAMAGE TO CIVIL O MILITARY PERSONAL AND RESPONDING TO FIRE IF THEY WERE FIRST MADE THE ENGLISH SIDE.

All English military captured was returned to Britain, rapidly, which became, with the English landing at San Carlos.

I remind you is that when England take the islands in 1833, all Argentine citizens in Malvinas, were arrested and taken to London, TO BE JUDGED BY AN ENGLISH COURT AND UNTIL TODAY, their whereabouts are unknown after being tried, convicted and imprisoned in London. What is certain is that they were not returned to Buenos Aires but then, no one knew anything more.

WITHOUT DAMAGE TO CIVIL O MILITARY PERSONAL AND RESPONDING TO FIRE IF THEY WERE FIRST MADE THE ENGLISH SIDE.
You should read the actual report on the action at Moody Brooks....your troops came in to KILL !!!
Then they imposed their rule on an unarmed and subjugated population, threatened them, held them hostage and laid minefields indiscriminately round the island.
You are suffering from the delusion that the islands actually belong to Argentina. The action in 1833 was the removal of a military garrison from British territory. The history of this has been discussed ad nauseum on MercoPress. . Your government has been rewriting it's history, and teaching it as Holy Writ.
It's Argentina which is causing the problem. Lying to the UN about the UK's nuclear base on the Falklands, militarising the S.Atlantic by keeping a deterrent force to stop Argentina invading British territory again.
What is so wrong with your country that you think annexing a small group of islands 1800 km. from B.A. will make you deliriously happy.

    Are you sure about that?

There is plenty of documentary evidence in ARGENTINA and the UK, to show that Argentine settlers were invited to stay.
All but 4 or 5 of them did.
    NOBODY WAS TRIED IN LONDON.
    NOBODY DISAPPEARED.
    Those are lies.

Your own Captain Pinero arrested some of the Argentine Garrisn and TOOK THEM TO TRIAL IN BA. He also transported the remainder of the garrison home to BA, along with the settlers who did not want to stay.

How could RIVERO, your hero, murder several of Vernet's company on the Falklands in July, if he was sent to trial in London in January, sorry not possible.

Later, RIVERO and the murderers were arrested, but the courts in London would not try them.
RIVERO was taken to Rio De Janiero, at his request. It is presumed that he died there.

There were still Argentine settlers and settlers of other nations, living under British Rule on the Fslklsnds.

    @21 Hernan

“I remind you is that when England take the islands in 1833, all Argentine citizens in Malvinas, were arrested and taken to London”

Is this what you are indoctrinated with at school?

In 1833, the military garrison that was asked to leave had only been on the Islands for three months and most of them were criminals who murdered their commander and were subsequently tried and executed on their return to Buenos Aires.

The British orders were to allow any civilians that wanted to stay as Vernet had requested permission form the British for his settlement.

So as at January 1833 when HMS Clio left the Islands, most of the settlers including Rivero stayed, the majority of them of South American origin.
There were only two British people in that settlement at the time, none of them English.

What you have failed to mention is that most of Pinedo's crew were British sailors, which explains why the British arrival was not contested and I would like to point out that these British sailors, were not allowed to stay on the Islands as they were part of a military force.

Also, the black slaves in the settlement were granted their freedom by the British.

You fail to mention Antonina Roxa, a South American gaucho that stayed (after 1833)in the Falklands for many years, eventually buying a ranch on the Falklands near Stanley. Also Carmelita Penny, a black slave (freed by the British) who died in Stanley about 1870. One of the slaves was married to the head foreman(Simon) (apparently told to represent the United Provinces by Pinedo after 1833, and she also lived in the Falklands for many years after 1833. Incidentally Simon (French) was murdered by your mate Rivero and what makes me laugh is that you lot associate Brisbane (who was not on the Islands in January 1833) as the 'British Authority' when Rivero murdered him after he returned to lead Vernet's settlement . Yet Simon, who was meant to be the United Provinces was also killed by Rivero.

@26, you must understand that Argies have to lie to make their sovereignty claim, because they know that the truth is that the Falklands are British and were more than 100 years before they tried invading in the early 1830s.

Yes, and I never tire of reminding them of what 1833 entailed-would have more respect for them if they replied, and there have been a few spirited attempts, and even these have floundered.
The fact that history shows them like rabbits caught in the headlights, with often no reply to factors related to 1833, illustrates your point that their arguments are like houses built on quicksand because they are happy to lie with no shame.

    Because it's never their fault.
