Rajoy apologizes before the Senate Rajoy apologizes before the Senate

With senior members of his own Popular Party among the dozens of Spaniards facing charges of corruption and bribery, Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy apologized to the Senate for appointing to public office some individuals who were not “worthy” of it.

In a session of the Spanish Senate, Rajoy said he understands and shares the “anger and frustration” of Spaniards as yet another wave of corruption allegations involving business leaders, civil servants and public officials sweeps the country.

“In the name of the Popular Party, I want to apologize to all the Spanish people for having appointed people to positions they were not worthy of occupying and who appear to have abused them,” the Spanish premier said.

His apology came a day after 51 mayors, town council members, bankers and businessmen in at least four Spanish provinces were arrested on charges of bribery and influence peddling, and in particular, accepting kickbacks in return for awarding procurement contracts.

Some of those now facing charges were influential members of Rajoy's Popular Party, including Francisco Granados, who had held a senior position in the Greater Madrid Regional Authority until his Swiss bank accounts came to light earlier this year.

Rajoy said that the latest cases of corruption seem to be related to the personal greed of public officials, not to the political organizations to which they belong or used to belong.

He stressed that those individuals who are members of the Popular Party and are under investigation pending charges, have been suspended from membership and if the allegations are confirmed, they will be expelled.
