It should have never have been given to Brazil. Unfortunately they are just not ready for an event on this scale.
Shame.
I expect some countries may retire from certain competitions.
Looks like Brazil can only 'talk a good game'.
Sad really.
I think the best way forward is to set up a permanent 'Olympic' site in Greece. All participating countries could contribute a % based on their GDP of the previous 4 years for the upkeep.
This would bring much needed stable income to Greece, and none of these shennagians that we see all too often.
Pumping raw sewage directly into the sea and expecting athletes to risk their lives windsurfing through poo is a disgrace. Incidentally, this is the reason why there are so many shark attacks in Recife as they are attracted to the human excrement in the water
In Recife, only 35 percent of the sewage is treated, and nearby municipalities sometimes only treat six percent. The polluted waters appeal to sharks who are known to scavenge through trash for food.
Secondly, Greece is in the mess it is in because paying tax in Greece for many years was a rather voluntary affair and they cooked the books to enter the Euro, which has been a monumental disaster for them. On top of that they have ignored the democratic will of their people, ousted their elected president and allowed the EU commission to implant their own stooge to run the country. Not the best reasons for everyone else to cough up for a perpetual hellenic subsidised olympic games!

re: your first paragraph. Agreed.
re: 2nd. Yes, but my suggestion would keep world focus on Greece as other countries would wish to not only keep an eye on where their money was spent, but also put Greece under scrutiny in general.
They would be obliged to 'behave'. Cultural change will only come when the people recognise that their tax is going to be spent on them, not into corrupt politicions/officials pockets.
Cultural change will only come about with both external pressure and a forced internal clean-up.
Sunlight is the best disinfectant!
I believe my suggestion could be a 'win-win'.
Although it will take at least a generation. Considering that the majority of young educated Greeks flee to Germany/UK/the wider world, they are already seeing how this is possible.
Even those at home, what with modern technologly etc are realising how thing 'could be'.
There is hope yet.
However, I can't see other countries going for it.
Just as Brazil was seduced by the Olympic 'honour', so are many other countries.
It is sold to countries, and in turn, sold to their people by their own politicians - with promises of instant Prestige, new or improved infrastructure, investment opportunities, tourisism benefits, and jobs jobs jobs... !
Vancouver,Beijing, London, Socchi, - they all romanced the IOC and sweetened the pot for consideration.
The Vancouver 2010 Olympics were marvellous, but incredibly disruptive at the same time.
What was sold as a great financial windfall, turned out to be, we'll be lucky if we break even. As it is, it was deemed a great success, but it has taken years to realise arguably solid benefits.
The IOC loves the bidding process ;-)
Setting up an Olympics in a new spot every 2 years is a boon to them.
They have their own crews that set up the timekeeping apparatus for the events, consultants, and multinational crews for the broadcast centres - big money for these foreign workers!
I don't think a permanent site will please the IOC, nor will it appeal to 'host country' politicians - they cannot even pay off their friends and have limited funds for 'cooking the books'.
I agree though - Brazil has demonstrated with the World Cup, that they cannot manage the finches and the scale of the projects.
Can they get through this without losing $Billions???
Films probably realises now, the only winners are the IOC and their money making machine.
Unfortunately, the LATAM desire for prestige put them in this situation, and they can't get out of it now!!

Nice to 'see' you again. I'm in the foothills of the Andes once more, and although the secenery is great, the internet connection is intermitent.....
I appreciate what you say, but the London Olympics did come in ''at profit' only £9million or so, but I think it was the first ever? Happy to be proved wrong, can't look it up right now.
I think this will be beyond Brazil, could go very wrong...
The Olympic Committee is like FIFA, too much politics and corruption. It took a nation like the UK to stand up to it. Unfortunately that is exactly the reason the UK did not get the World Cup. It went to Qatar!
like you said, money and 'prestige'.
well, 'nuff said...
The cost of the Fiasco World Cup, the Shit Olympics and the utter disaster that the self-inflicted 'economic success?' brings coupled with the fallout from the government corruption may all conspire to bring the edifice down.
I do hope so; perhaps a 'clean' start could be made.

I wonder if the ungracious hostess, Dilma, will show the same sour face at the Olympics, that she did when Argentina and Brazil lost to Germany?
