The Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), José Miguel Insulza, today welcomed the “historic announcement” made by the Presidents of Cuba and the United States, Raúl Castro and Barack Obama, of the resumption of diplomatic relations between the two countries, as well as the re-opening of embassies in Washington and Havana, the lifting of certain commercial restrictions and the beginning of new paths for cooperation on issues of mutual interest, among other measures. This is long overdue.

It would have been better AFTER the Castro dictatorship, having held power by force since the 1950's, had ended.

Stink, the beast, Cuba, represses the people, keeps them in poverty, denies them freedom of speech, blocks the internet and means of communication - rather like your country is aspiring to. Some knuckle draggers are claiming this change of policy is down to the Pope!

A stupid policy that gained nothing.

    Better left in the past.

    Move on. Get over it.

Whatever will the left rally around now in Latin America.... probably Venezuela's impending collapse into anarchy.

This was predicted by the Intelligence analysts some months ago. Venezuela is unstable and the price of oil keeps falling, as the future looked bleak for the Island, the regime will loosen its grip and be forced to have to come to terms with the United States. Washington is in a position of strength, let's see if Obongo can capitalize on it and make demands on human rights, democracy, free market, free speach and democracy be endorsed to the Castros

“Washington in a position of strength”

Wow, if you call embargoing a country for almost 60 years only at the end to be forced to accept that government a position of strength, then “strength” is monumentally overrated.

I would hope Castro demands those things in NORTHAMOLAND. Elections there are rigged, free speech is on the wane unless you are a corporation, free markets have not existed there for at least 10 years, and human rights (the lack thereof) is a big reason things are boiling over in cities all over that forsaken continent.

60 years during which the USSR provided the island during the entire cold war and then by Venezuela during the 2000s... Only in the 90s was Cuba really fatherless and isolated, during which Castro was flexing its regime and was getting closer to the US.

Cuba needs the US more than ever. And that is the geopolitics of this. Its nothing to do with the Papa villero.

    Let's see.

Castro has led Cuba into poverty, his people starve and he has need hand outs from any anti-American regime he can find.

Americans have had to do without Cuban cigars.

Yes Toby, it's hard to see who has the position of strength Lol.

The US are showing pity, undeserved by the Castros, but necessary to save the average Cuban.

The same pity the UK showed Argentina in 1982, and today by not reacted to your crackpot fascist government rhetoric.

Pity is a strength not a weakness.

The worst comes to Cuba now!

Approach of North-American Nazis is not good thing to do.

Speculation, racism, belligerence, economic sanctions, protectionism, poverty, concentration of wealth, invasions and wars, terrorism, pollution, fast food and intolerance...

These are some words that begin to be part of the Cuban vocabulary.

I'm sorry Mr. Castro, but you are an incompetent with very limited view.

Does this thawing mean that Cuba will now demand sovereignty over the whole island and demand the American leave,

    more importantly,
as Cuba supported the lunatic CFK, over the British Falkland's,
will the evil empress of the south fully support Cuba over the American part of the island of Cuba...lol

I just love how suddenly the North Amoans and Brittos have re-found their lost cockiness. One that was so unfairly swathed away in 2008 when their economies crashed. They had to wait 5 long years to see their economies on the mend (2013), and almost two more years (2015) to know see the likes of Russia, India, China, Brazil, etc get cooled down a bit from their incipient cockiness.

Wanna bet your economies crash AGAIN in 3-5 years???

    Losers.

    BRICS.

Brasil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, is the normal order of the acronym.. Russia, India, China, and Brasil would be RICB, and of course omits the “S” or South Africa, which was included officially in BRICS in 2010.

Russia being put up first might suggest an unconscious, personal preference of nations, and politics, but although they are a major gas and petroleum distillates player, oddly they are not as yet an OPEC member.

Although I respect the historical fact that the Ukraine, and other countries were part of the former Soviet Union, Russia today is having serious economic problems at the moment resulting from the West's sanctions over the Crimea, and other territorial actions in the Ukraine.

Such actions her in LATAM would be similarly sanctioned if say Bolivia were to try and retake the seaports lost years ago by force. Conversely, all of LATAM and Mercosur/Mercosul applaud the North Americans for taking the bold steps with Cuba announced yesterday.

So if Argentina invaded the Falkland's against the wishes of the islanders,
would the south American countries use sanction's against them,,,,

    I don't think so.

Spaniards are not reliable. However, Argentina is already domesticated by Mercosur.

If the Argentines invaded the Falklands, we Luso-Brazilians go into war against Argentina!

The islands are Argentine and they will come peacefully with the UK state power.

The agreement is over Argentina's “claim.” At least in spirit of the letter.

There is nothing in any of the agreements I have read authorizing support of the use of force by Argentina to effect such a claim. At least in Spanish and Portuguese. No LATAM country would be so stupid to sign such a document authorizing “ any and all use of force ” in that event, given the obvious consequences of being designated ( an targeted ) as a co-belligerent. .

Sanctions would come indirectly by the lack of participation and material support, at least overtly by Mercosur members. One can see an example of that recently over the expectation of Gripens by Argentina via Brasil. When the British stepped in and halted any such attempt, there was no objection by Brasil, who might also lose it's investment with the Gripen by such maneuvers.

Covertly, there would be different understandings and agreements. One need only to look back at the events of 1982 and read of all the various deals cut by various nations and both sides, many of which have been printed here on Mercosur Press.

South American is not required to show that the Falklands are south American!

The UK has a moral duty to show his people that the islands are from America!
