i would have thought that Argentina could have made a better deal i.e. exchange beef / soya bean for Fuel or spare parts for their electricity grid
what the hell are they going to do with 1/2 dozen bombers ( the rest will probably be scrapped for spares)
still time for a leisurely cruise to Stanley for a RN air warfare destroyer

    OMG how embarrassing!

I don't know which country is more pathetic.

Russia selling planes for beef and frickin' grain.

Or that Argentina is so broke that it only has beef and grain to offer. Maybe it could sell a province for some beads and mirrors.

Bit of a silly story really- express says these panes could mount patrols over Stanley:
    Um er:
1- bankrupt Argies have to learn to fly them -pay for the fuel and the spares and the missiles

2- then get past the Typhoons - old planes would be easy meat for the Typhoons.

3 If they ever were deployed there would simply be an increase in nos of Typhoons deployed - Hard Shelters already in built at Mount Pleasant - have been for years. Just takes 36-48 hours to arrange reinforcements to fly in from UK direct.
Express reporter may be worried he cannot make a story! - We Islanders are not!

No harm in being cautious. An overconfident British or Falkland Islander attitude that Argentina is or will be completely incapable of another invasion is probably the very first step in it happening.

Yes these planes are old and the ongoing financial and technical difficulties of training, maintenance and armament have been pointed out. However if they do actually end up being delivered, they would still represent an advance in Argentina's military capability (not of themselves bringing it up to required strength for invasion, but still capable of nuisance and harassment) that would need to be countered.

There is nothing wrong with pointing that out. At best, nothing will come of this story- at worst, the fact that Argentina is regularly talking about upgrading its air force and may one day do so is another bit of evidence for HMG to consider when the bean-counters in London propose yet another round of defence cuts.

The Littlehampton I.O.D.E. is having a Jumble and Bake Sale at St. Catherine's Church, to send help to a 'needy' Argentine province.

“Many a child are undernourished, and turn up to school, such as it is, without breakfast or proper clothes... ” says Mrs. Hazel Barker, in charge of collecting funds, “ it's shocking and sad... ”

I think UK should concern itself more with becoming an Islamic Caliphate, and its own home grown terrorists in its own backyard before worrying about what the losers running Argentina 8000 miles away that can’t even organize a piss up in a brewery can do...

Then again, I guess it is easier to look the other way

    @11 CD2

Well CD if the UK ever does become an Islamic Caliphate, well make sure we visit Argentina 1st and convert you all too.

However, unlike you CD, the British aren't afraid of people who are different. We aren't afraid of a few fanatics. But if the big bad muslims frighten you feel free to run and hide under your bed.

But in the meantime, the main points I pick up from this article isn't the fact that London is concerned, it the facts that Russia is desperate, Argentina is desperate, and it's doubtful that even if this 'lend/lease' agreement got off the ground, it would take at least 5 years for Argentina to train it's pilots, engineers and other ground crew sufficiently to be able to fly, maintain and service the aircraft. And quite frankly we all know that Argentina doesn't have the money to maintain and service the aircraft, and if they did it would disappear into various 'officials' off-shore bank accounts, just like all the money did for their ice-breaker.

If such a deal did go ahead though, it would give the British a very good excuse to reinforce and upgrade their defences in the Falklands, and give them practice at shooting down enemy aircraft - namely Argentina's.

Just to put things into perspective, these planes cannot provide an invasion force, they are just old jets. If the threat became serious, would we not fortify the islands even more with a T45 and more tornados? We don't need a carrier with sufficient aircraft ready down there.

In any event, one missile shot from Argentina would be an act of war, this would justify cruise missile attacks on Buenos Aires.

I really would not be bothered about these planes at all.

  • LEPRecon

    @15 Britworker

Agreed. Both the Allies and the Axis learned that it is impossible to bomb a country into surrendering. You will always need boots on the ground, and in the case of the Falkland Islands troop carriers to get those 'boots' to where they are needed, and of course ships to protect the troop carriers from attack.

And Argentina doesn't have a navy worth bothering about, let alone enough ships to transport the number of troops, equipment and supplies they'd need to invade and hold onto the Falklands.

Frankly I'd be more worried if they were buying ships off the Russians. But again we know that even if they had the money to do that (which they don't) they can't look after the ships that they had, let alone more modern ships that would require more maintenance and servicing and costlier spare parts.

It's a shame because although the Type 23s were old, they are still a force to be contended with, but Argentina has just let them rust to nothing.

So in reality all the UK has to contend with is the constant moaning and bitching coming from BA, which is easily ignored, and shows the world, especially their SA 'brothers', just how impotent and weak they truly are.

You guys are freaking out for what so far is nothing but a joke.

All this article reveals is how eager some folks over there in the UK are to increase defense spending. Nothing else. They are looking for any chance to call for OMG THEY WILL RE-INVADE THE FALKLANDS AGAIN!!1!!!!1!!!!.
I wonder if they do that (knowing in advance that NOTHING will happen) to feel great once their guesses are confirmed. And then, they ascribe that to the usual UKSTRONG!!! chest-beating attitude.
    Curious practice indeed.

So calm down your 2nd-round hopes, cancel your counter-invasion plans, and let your inner couch-commando rest, for god sake ...

Sometimes I think this site is visited by teens who take a break from their COD...

Needless to say, all these BS from the UK would be absurd and stupid if Argentina´s president would keep her mouth shout, and stop a senseless claim over two islands which never belonged to Argentina.

So it´s a sort of win-win situation for BS purposes, I guess.

I think the point here is that if the Argentines do receive these planes they will use them to fly sorties around the Falklands simply because we won't choose to shoot them down.

    Dec 29th, 2014 - 10:50 am - Link - Report abuse 0
  • LEPRecon

    @19 Idlehands

Perhaps, but that would depend on the next government, wouldn't it?

I'd bet if UKIP got into power they'd give the Argentines 1 warning, and then if ignored they'd open fire.

Remember that the rules of engagement are written by the government, and the UK has the right to defend it's territory against any aggressors.

And if a plane got shot down what would happen? Argentina would cry and complain. They might get some sympathetic noises coming from their neighbours...and then the UN would...do NOTHING.

And the UN would do nothing because the UK would be acting within international law.

But it's a moot point. Argentina won't be getting these planes, just like they didn't get the Mirages or the Kifars. Even if Argentina did get them, they don't have the money to buy the fuel for them, or to buy spare parts for them, or to train their pilots to fly them, or to train their engineers to maintain and repair them.

So as I said in my earlier post, all this story does is make both Russia and Argentina look desperate, which of course they both are.

For the UK and the Falkland Islanders it's normal jogging.

The SU-24 is a long range ground attack aircraft roughly the equivalent of the long retired USAF F-111. It's still a potent aircraft but long in the tooth. It would have trouble in penetrating modern defence systems. Maintenance would also be a problem.
It's interesting why Argentina - a peaceful country we are told - would want an aircraft designed and configured for offensive action instead of a defensive fighter, Designs on attacking who or what ?

The Express writer has a poor understanding of the facts. Recent Defence cuts have had nothing to do with manning levels at Mount Pleasant-the number of Aircraft and personnel has been the same for many years. In addition, the defence of the Falklands is not reliant on HMS Queen Elizabeth. Even if she was fully operational now, MPA could be reinforced within 48 hours from the UK via Ascension-far quicker than the Carrier could get to the Islands

Just to get this into perspective, Islander1 has already pointed out that, if thought necessary, Britain would simply ferry out more Typhoons. The Sukhoi is slower than the Typhoon and cannot carry as much ordnance. There's no indication that the Sukhoi is capable of using beyond-visual-range munitions. There will be other deficiencies as 'Fencers' were almost exclusively used for low-level missions, so unnecessary equipment was removed. Even places such as Belarus have retired them!
@7. What pressure? You do know that we still have 102 of those Panavia Tornados you were so scared of left, don't you? Together with a much improved air-refuelling capability? 56 could arrive every other day.
@11. We can manage to do more than one thing at a time!
@18. Who's freaking out? But a 'threat' is a threat. One wonders what argieland needs with low-level attack aircraft. Although the chances are that the argies wouldn't have them for long. They seem to have quite a history of crashing or being shot down. The Su-24s have the soviet union's first digital navigation system. Just as well as argieland's radar infrastructure is pretty basic. Russia's radar infrastructure is much better. And they still crash. How many would argieland lose during training? Nope, there's no freaking out. In a couple of days Britain could deploy 7 times as many more than comparable aircraft.
@19. Sorry, the UK couldn't afford to have argie combat aircraft flying around with apparent impunity. I would expect the argie government to get one diplomatic protest and warning. Next, there might be a week of argie aircraft being individually warned off. The Falklands EEZ includes the airspace. Maybe there would be a few days of cannon fire warning shots. And then? Entering the Falklands EEZ with armed combat aircraft and ignoring warnings is an act of war!

I can't see this happening and even if it does, Argentina has no qualified combat pilots because they don't have the fuel or parts to train. Military might has little to do with the equipment that is available. You have to train, bloody the troops, make mistakes to be a winner.

I think UK should concern itself more with becoming an Islamic Caliphate,

    interesting point,
take this into consideration, see how these Muslim fanatics defend what it or they consider theirs,
the bloodshed , and total disregard to international law,
and what they would do to Argentina,,,,
    ..
Britain become a Muslim state is no longer a funny to some argies ,,is it.

At the end of the day, if Argentina decides to acquire they upgrades, so be it,

if Argentina decides to buy new ships guns missiles, then so be it,
    every decision has a consequence,

and if war comes, then to be fair, Argentina , its government , and all its supporters will get exactly what it wants, and what it has yearned for

all I am saying,,,,is that if you are prepared to pay the consequences of your action,
then the sooner it happens, the better for all of us,
at least we will find out one way or another,

    still,
I predict when the dust dies down and the bodies are counted, and Argentina is destroyed , and what's left of its government is in prison, or legged it to Ecuador with the countries riches,
the British Falkland's will still be,
    BRITISH,

“You guys are freaking out for what so far is nothing but a joke.”

Not freaking out as such on here-we're lining up to ridicule this report. However regarding the report, I have to agree you have a point-the standard ill-educated reporter panicking that we haven't got a carrier task force to take islands already with a massive aircraft carrier on the Islands taking no more than three days to reinforce. The reporters haven't the brains to work out the difference between the speed of jet aircraft and ships.

I once saw reporters in the Islands wearing parkas ready to be picked up by Landrovers. The temperature was 25 0C and the rest of the populace was in t -shirts and shorts. Sweat was streaming down their faces, and they fair stank, so I asked “why are you wearing parkas, surely you can't be cold”? The reporter-“We have to make it look cold for the photographs to prove how hard we are to visit the Islands”. The same reporter later stood under a group of fairly tall Macrocarpa trees and spoke the words-in front of a camera-“The treeless Falklands” to the delight of some locals falling about with laughter, followed by“I think you'd better cut that,” noticing the trees.

If there is a possibility of Fencers being deployed, I hardly think the UK will wait till the pilots have been trained and they have been delivered, to either increase the Typhoon element or simply provide a submarine and T45.

It would be difficult for the Fencers to operate from roads after their airfields had been hit by Tornados or SLCMs.
    @35
“it would be as if we were fearing a new invasion everytime england buys a gun”

Maybe not you brave Paul, but your government shits itself if dud surface to air missiles with a 4 mile range are let off on the Islands (do the maths 350-4=?), and even if they think a submarine is anywhere in the South Atlantic (even if it isn't) the hyperbole is deafening. “lt should be made crystal-clear to them- “lf you enter our airspace, uninvited, then you will not leave in one piece” -NO exceptions.”

Check you out, you're bad self!!!!!

“Dear old Conqueror” would be proud and, I must say, that leaving the argentines alone and letting them think that they are “getting away with it” is playing a dangerous game that can have disastrous consequences.

So, yeah!! I'm with you on this one. It's not like the Islanders would have no warning this time, or the means to deal with such a threat.

So lets be fair, time to draw a line in the sand and say to them “enough is enough. From now on, ANY Argentine warplane enters our airspace will be shot down” and leave it at that. From then on, they know the risks, it will be all their own fault.

Give them enough rope, watch them hang themselves ( pass the popcorn please....... )

    50. Yes Toby has long advanced his “theory” if we all went back to the barter system and mercantilism we'd all be better off.
I will trade you one cow for 3 bags of wheat and the like.

    He should be very happy.

I do wonder how many bags of wheat the internet company would want every month.

Every time the argies get bored,
they deliberately start to send Chinese whispers,
    and this is no difference,

they just get of on the re-action.

The Argentine government does make a habit of making passive aggressive
Threats towards the islands described the bennies as non people.
Then acts all suprised when the British react when you they try to buy new kit.
Argies are going to have kittens when rapier is replaced by camm and meteor goes into service

Oh its unlikely to lead to much. The Argentine needs America more than it needs Russia, the latter being just a short term arrangement. In the long run America has so much power over the Argentine, they will not be permitted fall into the Russian political orbit. Also, in any event of any South American country falling under the influence or forming a military alliance with any other country percieved to threaten the West, then the Falklands become militarily more important to the West. It is possible that the USA would ask permission to use the military facilities on the Falklands in the not too distant future

Yes Paul thanks for saying it--the British troops entered Buenos Aires twice and then they were chased away--by the populace nothing less.
Out of despondency, I guess, they decided to grab the Malvinas.
But don't worry. We have democracy now and we don't intend to risk any more lives to recover what is rightfully ours. Time works in our favour and the day will come the British will hand them over to us in a silver plate or the islanders will send the Queen packing and opt for the best--and closest--country.

    @63 Enrique Massot,
    ln your dreams, sr Massot.
Who is going to make us give OUR land to you?
    1) You?
    -don't make me laugh.
    2) China?
-China could take OUR lslands, but they sure as hell, wouldn't give them to bumbling idiots like you, they'd keep them for their own use.
    3) Russia?
-Russia is not interested in a 4th rate country like Argentina & anyway, they have enough to worry about.
    4) USA,
US might like a handy base to keep you idiots from despoiling Antarctica.
There is no-one else señor, no one else to do your fighting for you.
    Sad

Can Argentina and Brazil be trusted?

You did not get it, “Isolde.”
It's just the way the world goes...no hurry. It could take some time--who cares? But the islands will return in time. No war. No help from anybody. Britain will at some point it's politically and economically costly to keep the islands and will negotiate their exit.

    Yes, Briton, you are right.
Argentina is more likely to implode & break up into smaller states first.
    Should be ripe pickings then.
l'm sure Brazil & Chile would be VERY interested, interested enough to take a few pieces.
At last Paraguay will get its stolen land back.
And us, well, l can see the Falklands expanding onto the nearby S.Am mainland.
Oh yes, Enrique, l “get it” VERY well.
As you said, no hurry, Enrique.
You haven't reached the bottom yet but your pace is increasing.
    We can wait.

    @ 66 Enrique Massot

No, it's you who doesn't get it.

The Falklands have never 'been' Argentine, how can they ever 'return'?

The answer is patently obvious to anyone with half-a-brain: they NEVER will be argie.

I say that with confidence for one very simple reason which trumps EVERY pathetic argument you twats come up with and it is this: the UK government system is a parliamentary one.

Do you understand that? NO, of course you don't, you are 'thinking' of the disaster that is TDC: they CANNOT get rid of the government short of full term with a simple failure to pass a vote of confidence at any time the opposition obtain sufficient votes to force one.

This means the UK government will never challenge the Falklands being a British Overseas Territory unless the Islanders themselves want changes for the very simple reason: the British by far LOVE the Falklands AND the Falklanders and ANY move against the Falklands would result it the government being chucked out of office within 24 hours. THAT is only one of the advantages of having HRH Queen Elizabeth as our head of state unlike TDC that has TMBOA. What a disaster for the poor sods.

Also, you are quite mistaken about the costs of keeping a garrison on the Islands themselves but you are too stupid to see why, aren’t you?

besides costs of keeping a garrison ,

The cost of keeping the garrison is literally minute compared to the cost of
faili our and the recovery later,
and the cost of life it would entail,

The uk will defend till Doomsday if it has to,

Argentina on the other hand will not last till 2016...
