Hmm, these 2 statements are very telling.

“In her evening speech and reacting to criticism from UIA, Cristina Fernandez reflected that “we will see what the Chinese do and we will also see what we do”.

”She added “do not take Argentines for fools. Since when have businesses cared if cheap labor was coming over from China?”

Well, CFK really doesn't think before opening her mouth, does she?

    Let's break these statements up:
“we will see what the Chinese do” Well the Chinese will stick to the very letter of the agreement and won't brook any interference from Argentina.

“and we will also see what we do” In other words Argentina is planning on reneging on these contracts at the 1st convenient moment and will no doubt be screaming stuff about foreigners interfering in Argentina's sovereign affairs.

“do not take Argentines for fools.“ Well the Chinese have certainly taken Argentina for a fool, but the government doesn't care because after all they won't be in power when it all comes crashing down.

”Since when have businesses cared if cheap labor was coming over from China?” I think that businesses are worried that they won't be getting any work, nor will their Argentine workers. As President, Ms Kirchner, it is YOUR responsibility to provide an environment which stimulates the economy, which in turn creates jobs for the locals.

But now with all this 'cheap' Chinese labour, why should anyone hire Argentinians? The Chinese won't, unless it is to do the most menial jobs imaginable.

Face it China has gotten everything it wants out of this deal, and the Argentine government has just rolled over and signed it all away.

Great economical model btw Cristina. China loans you money, but doesn't give you money, it gives it to the Chinese firms that are going to build your infrastructure. Then you have to repay the Chinese every yuan. But no Argentine jobs, no Argentine firms getting business. It all goes to China. No wonder Argentine industry is fearful.

Canada almost got rooked into a similar deal.
In their case, however, when the unions blew the whistle on imported cheap mining labourers from China, the Canadian gov. felt they should cancel the deal, for the sake of fellow Canadians.

CFK ?? Not foo king rikely, as she would say!!

Do you have any doubt about the esteem that the chinese hold the rotting roadkillians in? The chinese are laughing their asses off at how easy it was to plunder/exploit the rotting roadkillians. Let's hope that they will be kind to their charges. The yoke is on china though. They haven't had the opportunity to fully enjoy their new pets.

As much as I dislike CFK, this maybe the only way to get a project done, on time and under budget.
The Chinese will be here working away while the lazy ass union workers are picketing at the gates and blocking the roads.
CFK and the UIA deserve each other. They are both to blame for the demise of Argentina.

Welcome to Argenchina. She sold the country to them. Last night she basically told the world to go to hell and not try to tell her how to do business. They are ignoring the WTO order to allow imports. Maybe its time for a few sanctions.

LEPRecon is right. On just one point, tens of thousands of Chinese arriving Chinatina. Who's going to feed them? They rike lice. So they import lice. That the argies daren't block. No import charges there! Based on the usual approach, China will pay the wages of their workers to their families back home. No argie taxes on income. Meanwhile, the workers will be fed by the Chinese government. Will the 'projects' come with instructions in spanish? So many ways to screw Chinatina.

For those of you who didn't hear her speech one of the items she announced was the opening of a plant to produce Glyphosate which as she said was a very important FRTILIZER for Argentine farmers. The stupid woman doesn't know that Glyphosate is a total WEED KILLER; if it was used on crops Argentina would have no harvests.

yeah....imported labor, from China no less will and should be a deal breaker for any nation. If she had any reasonable brain cell matter, she would have been demanding JOBS FOR HER PEOPLE. No.........what does she go after?......money in the register, AKA her pockets. And how does she explain these deals to the business community? By insulting them. She suffers from so many things and self esteem is high on the list.

Hear hear. Many countries around the world are making deals with China, including the U.S. and Canada. (Not saying good or bad). However, now that Argentina is doing some deals too, everybody is jumping up and down and crying fool.
I wish there had been such a ruckus when the western countries did all kinds of shameful deals using local allies such as Carlos Menem in the 1990s.

The UIA can stuff itself, they never want to compete. They are the prime responsible for MercoSur being a total failure along with the Argentine politicians. Hope the Chinese walk over them. Argentine industry is just as crappy as the Chinese.

Why should the agro sector subsidize the Argentine industry, why should the rest of the country subsidize BsAs and its metropolitan shithole??

    @16 Enrique Massot

Well good on Argentina doing these deals, but just what benefit do the ordinary Argentine citizen get out of it?

    Jobs?

    A stable economy?

The magical disappearance of Argentina's debts?

    None of these things.

The money China 'loaned' Argentina actually went straight to Chinese companies, no chance for Argentine companies to compete for contracts. The workforce will be Chinese, so no chance for Argentine citizens to get jobs.

The Chinese workforce also won't be paying tax in Argentina, so no income tax for the Argentine coffers. And after ALL of that Argentina has to pay China back with very high interest. In fact some of the deals have certain projects considered to be Chinese, including the land they are housed on. So your government has actually given away parts of Argentina, where Chinese law rules and only the Chinese have the authority.

All Argentina has gained is NOTHING except a small amount of infrastructure, which will benefit very few people.

No jobs. More unrest. More insecurity. And then there'll be another country you are indebted to. Oh and they won't forget the fact your President insulted them. They'll get their pound of flesh with interest from Argentina.

But at least your corrupt leader has gained some breathing space so she can run away with all the millions (if not billions) she has stolen.

Very few of the other countries that China trades with, or does deals with, have surrendered their sovereign territory to them.

You should be very, very worried right now.

You know, Carlos Menem was a lovable scoundrel of a president, who stole an enormous fortune and put Argentina into bankruptsy. Saying all that, he showed he had great appreciation of women in his second marriage and was a hundred times better than the K's. Menem was a crook, Cristina is pure evil and has sold Argentina's heart and soul to the Chinese.

Like I said, he is a scoundrel, but a likeable one as well.
I think half of Santiago ran into Carlos Menem and Cecilia Bolocco during his self imposed exile in Chile. He's surprisingly short, dark completed and exceptionally charming. Quite a contrast to Cecilia! I never spoke a single sentence to him, but I was very impressed with his warm personality and smile.
Another interesting observation is that during his presidency, diplomatic relations between Chile and Argentina were the best in last 50 years.
As far as spousal abuse to the former Miss Universe, there was no gossip.

Nahhh, its not that bad, Argentine industry needs competition...And most likely the Chinese will invest the minimum possible in Argentina, get some Chinese State companies harvest resources but as much as they can get to secure jobs for their own people and bypass Argentine labor law.

In ten years time a Peronist government we will confiscate their assets as they will also have the Unions putting pressure on them until they get a piece of the Chinese workers paycheck and Argentines will call them imperialist, colonizers, pirates and so on if they do their business honorably ....I’m sure you know that history all too well

There is no competition, your stupid president has seen to that.

China gets everything it wants. All the contracts have already been signed, no chance for Argentine companies to bid at all.China is even bringing in its own workers, so. It's Jobs for Argentines.

I agree with your second paragraph, but China isn't the west, it will get all of its money back or destroy Argentina completely.

Your politicians only think in the now, wheras the Chinese play the long game, and they will already have plans in place to counter any backtracking by your government.

Remember that on 10 years time the Chinese will have perfected the aircraft carriers and will be able to project themselves militarily as well as economically.

    34,
China is not as naive as the West, when they go to do business with crackpots in VZLA and Argentina they make sure they get paid in raw materials. In any case they will give us Yuans to buy their own junk.

As you realize they have no experience in naval overseas campaign since the XIII Century, but they will adapt soon, however they have to become the dominant power in South China sea and the Indonesian straights. That is yet to happen before they send carriers to extract blood away from a dead corpse which is the equivalent of getting legitimately paid from Argentine State.

The whole foundation stone of Peronism was total independence from foreign interests and capital , with state ownership of infrastructure at it's core .
With a stroke of a pen , Kletina has signed away the country's independence to a rapacious commercial colonizer for the next 50 years .
Maybe this is the end of Peronism ?
If the chinese also export their anti corruption practices , things could really turn out all right , with firing squads preceding the matches at the Monumental and the Bonbonera every sunday .
