The Argentine government and media agree that the country does not have the military capacity to attack the Falkland Islands as feared by Britain. A report in daily La Nacion points out the Argentine armed forces lack landing crafts, troop transport vessels and even the Mirage fighter planes are banned from flying on cloudy days because of repeated problems with their instruments. Beyond any wish or fantasy of domestic policy, the 650 kilometers separating the Malvinas islands are an insurmountable barrier“ no shit Sherlock, that will be the Southern Atlantic that separates you, cos the Islands are no where near your coast line. At least someone in Argentina has figured it out!
Mar 28th, 2015 - 10:27 am - Link - Report abuse 0Someone forgot to tell Mr Daniel Gallo that the Islands are an enclave and not having them disrupts their territorial integrity. Bet he will get a telling off from the Government. Dooohhhhh
They are STILL flying Mirages?
Mar 28th, 2015 - 11:12 am - Link - Report abuse 0Ha, ha, ha, you know the rest.
Hmmm lets see now. They have more than enough troop transport planes that are also capable of para dropping troops and cargo such as tanks on to the islands. When they have their new fighter jets, as good as the typhoons are its likely 2-3 out of the four are operational at any one time, therefore 18-24 jets against 2-3 typhoons won't be a long fight, so they will get Air Supierority quickly, as it also won't take long to knock out the 1 Rapier unit (Yes only 1 on the islands). Though the Rapier unit will probably be taken out by special forces mission timed to coincide with any air attack. They will also attack when they know the South Atlantic Patrol Vessel is days away from returning to the islands to defend them. So yes they have the ability and do not need Sea Superiority, they could once they have their new jets do it by air by para dropping their mean and Armour on to the islands a safe distance from mount pleasant, whilst their air force pound mount pleasant ready for the troops to capture it and the runaway. Which if intact can be used for their own aircraft to defend against our attempts to retake the islands. Bear in mind they will have their jets before our aircraft carriers are operational as it be early 2020's before we have a full contingent of F35's for the Queen Elizabeth carrier alone.
Mar 28th, 2015 - 11:17 am - Link - Report abuse 0Plus the Argentines are well known for their lies. So when they say one thing, such as they do not have the ability to invade, they mean that they do have the ability to invade, as per my first paragraph makes clear.

Argentina, despite what they say, would love a better military but there are two things stopping them:
1. Crisis Fernadez de Kirchner can't risk a decent military turning against her.
2. She can't afford it anyway.
3. Argentines lack the English warmongering gene...
Mar 28th, 2015 - 11:48 am - Link - Report abuse 0@7 Stevie
Mar 28th, 2015 - 12:03 pm - Link - Report abuse 0Since when? The 'warmongering gene' as you call has been around since BEFORE there were English people, and continues in many countries and people who are NOT English. So we can only surmise that this 'warmongering gene' is actually a part of Homo Sapiens genetic make up.
To remind YOU that the ONLY times that there has been violence regarding the Falklands was when Argentina initiated it.
Argentina is a VERY war mongering nation. You only have to listen to the bile your government spews out regarding the Falklands. You only have to look at Argentina's warmongering history where it STOLE land from the indigenous population, followed by STEALING land from your LATAM 'brothers', followed by your attempt to STEAL land from the British.
There is NO DOUBT in anyone's mind that IF Argentina had the military capability they would attack the Falklands in a heartbeat. Then you would follow up by attacking all your LATAM 'brothers' because you also claim their land as your own.
So the 'warmongering' gene is very, very much part of Argentine nationalist makeup, and a very large part of that genetic makeup.
But you knew that anyway, didn't you?
And as others say, Argentina is an untrustworthy nation that always says one thing, and then does the opposite. Your country has never met a treaty or law, or made a promise, that it hasn't planned on breaking.
If it were up to me I'd divert some of the troops and equipment, that are leaving Germany to return to the UK, to the Falklands and give your pathetic government something to really complain about.
-Infantry battalions
-Artillery regiments
-Armoured regiments
-Apache helicopters
-More RAF fighters & bombers
-More RN vessels
And of course the nuclear powered submarine that may or may not be cruising around beneath the waves of the South Atlantic.
@7 Probably why they lost in 1982 when they embarked on their armed military invasion of a peaceful island.

Mar 28th, 2015 - 12:27 pm - Link - Report abuse 0Lets not bring that gene up, Klingon. That's simply not fair....
Mar 28th, 2015 - 12:34 pm - Link - Report abuse 0@4. I'm sorry, but where are all these troop transport planes you refer to? I've had a look through the argie air force and army equipment inventories and I can't see anything capable of carrying more than about 75 passengers. Nor can I see anything capable of lifting a tank. When it comes to the Typhoons, you might want to remember that there are already 4. And the slightest sign of any sort of attack would probably see more leaving from the UK. Perhaps you might want to take account the capabilities of Typhoons AND their pilots. WHEN exactly is HMS Clyde 'days away'? Perhaps some research on these Chinese aircraft? Start with the J10. Pakistan signed a deal for 36 of these aircraft, that look remarkably like a Typhoon, in November 2009. They are still waiting. But then China has been accused of covering up statistics on the number that have crashed. Then there's the JF-17. It will take some time to supply. It's fitted with a Martin-Baker ejection seat. That'll have to come out. And have you read the specification and compared it to the Typhoon? The Typhoon's loaded weight is twice that of the JF-17. Something to do with munitions? The Typhoon is 180 mph faster. The Typhoon flies at least 10,000 feet higher. Compare number of hardpoints. The Typhoon has nearly twice as many. Have you worked out how many Typhoons/Tornados can be refuelled in the air by an RAF Voyager? Shall we say 4? The RAF has 14 Voyagers available. That'll be 56 Typhoons/Tornados arriving. Perhaps they'll 'spot' some Voyagers 2,000 miles each way from Ascension. Perhaps the Typhoons/Tornados will fly down the west coast of Africa and just need a refuelling 'spot' halfway between Ascension and the Falklands. Let's say 4 out there. Leaving the other 10 to transport troops at 300 per aircraft. And also refuel C-17s and A400Ms.
Mar 28th, 2015 - 12:48 pm - Link - Report abuse 0But I do agree that argies are well known for lies. Important to remember to shoot down/sink anything argie. Cruise ships/'research' vessels? Sink 'em. Aircraft? Destroy!

Accurately? Are these aircraft provided with a device that stops the prevailing South Westerlies?
Go figure.
When they have their new fighter jets, as good as the typhoons are
Which ones exactly ? J10, Thunder?
What if they can't get these jets before Meteor enters service?
therefore 18-24 jets against 2-3 typhoons won't be a long fight,
Depends on their armament, but 18 jets (unless invisible to radar) are a bigger target than 3 aircraft. Also how much combat experience have Argentine pilots got recently?
If there is a British sub in the area, these jets might not have a runway to return to.
Bear in mind they will have their jets before our aircraft carriers are operational as it be early 2020's before we have a full contingent of F35's for the Queen Elizabeth carrier alone.
Aircraft carriers (with or without F35s) would take a few weeks to get to the Islands; a force of Tornados and Typhoons (etc) will reach the Islands within two days, i.e. well before 2020.
Do you think Typhoons sail to get to MPA?
s it also won't take long to knock out the 1 Rapier unit
By air or ground forces?
whilst their air force pound mount pleasant ready for the troops to capture it and the runaway. Which if intact can be used for their own aircraft to defend against our attempts to retake the islands.
If their airforce pound the runway so Typhoons cannot take off, it's not going to be intact for their use, is it.
If they don't hit the runway, they'll find it difficult to attack Mt Pleasant if the Typhoons are operational.
And if they try to land aircraft on MPA they will have to approach the runway from the East which will give more chance of our guys using infantry weapons or Starstreak to take them down (i.e. without Typhoons, without Rapier).
Also how will they land if we barricade the runway? Will our lads unfurl a banner saying 'Please land here'?

Mar 28th, 2015 - 03:00 pm - Link - Report abuse 0It's actually good that the UK is currently addressing the Falklands defense issues as apparently Argentina is aggressively increasing its offensive abilities as well by focusing on its national defense industry which will provide an economic stimulus and increased employment to rebuild its military.
FADEA Official News Release
Buenos Aires
March 25, 2015
Public Distribution
“Directors of the Argentina aircraft factory Fabrica Argentina de Aviones SA [Fadea] announced plans for significant revival of the company, by the purchase of all intellectual and design rights to build the famed Breda ba.88 Lince, as its primary fighter attack bomber, to be known as IA-15 whose first completion will be ready by early 2017. This aircraft will allow pilots to pass training in the mentor to the Pampa IA-63, an advanced trainer aircraft, receiving the modernization of its engine and avionics, to make it competitive in the new global aviation.”
As I have explained ad nauseam about this topic. Argentina has no serious plans in invading the FI and any other ally like China or Russia even less as the South Atlantic has null strategic value for them.
Mar 28th, 2015 - 03:11 pm - Link - Report abuse 0Any comments like the ones here are just that or fantasy or the usual MP Argentina bashing comments.
If Argentina is interested in 3 generation air craft, my best guess is that it has more interest in leveling the power balance with neighboring southamerican powers and having a nominal air dominance over its own territory and borders.
Not even Britain is showing a real will to substantially enhance the islands defenses.

While true, that is certainly not a bragging point, that you intentionally turned your modest muscle into soft, repulsive fat.
As usual a lot of hot air from Argy ministers about what is not the issue and was not said, even suggesting British Gov policy is set by articles in the Sun no less. Yet again they try and divert from the real issues.
Mar 28th, 2015 - 03:58 pm - Link - Report abuse 0What Mr Fallon actually said was “The principle threat remains... the quite unjustified claim of Argentina to those Islands.”
Nothing about Argentina’s present military capabilities.
The issue, the threat, is Argentina’s continued “quite unjustified claim of to those Islands.”
With Argentina’s aggressive pursuit of those “quite unjustified claims”, with Economic blockades, harassing of fishing vessels, insulting and abusive language when referring to both the Islanders and the British and so on.
Not to mention the need for the British to protect the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the other British territories in the region, from continued Argentine incursions and encroachments.
About the only thing the Argentine military has managed to do is maintain its presence in British Antarctic Territory. A presence which in the not too distant future will probably have to be removed, by force.
Ultimately it is no business of Argentina what the British do in British territory. One way or another they will have to come to terms with that.

@13, 14. Good idea not to mention that 'gene'. After a relatively short period, it has the same effect on argie women as it does on spanish and italian women. They become fat, ugly, shrill, desperate sows. CFK is an example. Seen the very few full length pictures where you can see the paunch. The turkey neck. By her own admission, the shovelfuls of 'foundation'. Haven't we all heard the screeches over the tv and radio? And seen the bandy legs?
Mar 28th, 2015 - 05:47 pm - Link - Report abuse 0@18. You can't beat brains. 'Beautiful' argie women versus Margaret Thatcher. Never heard Galtieri & Co being called 'beautiful' before. Although they were undoubtedly 'women'. Much like most of the argie 'armed forces'. Apologies to proper women.
@21. Why have you 'explained ad nauseam about this topic'? Admitting, for the moment, that many of your comments make us nauseous, what do you hope to achieve? Are you in a position of authority in argieland? Can you make CFK go and shove it? Then quit trying to tell us not to be concerned. We believe what we see and hear. We see argieland desperately seeking the most up-to-date combat aircraft it can afford. For offence or defence against whom? Unable to pay your debts but buy aircraft at US$30 million a time? Putrid Jelly reckoned that argieland could take the Falklands but for the British garrison. Timoplonker reckons that the Islands will belong to argieland in 19 years. (Yep, we're counting). Then you come along. Just go away.
@23. I agree completely. Especially the need to remove argies from Antarctica. Just think. A proper nation travels from close to one pole of the planet to the other to conduct research. It GIVES a polar station to a sub-normal repressive state. A while later the same sub-normal state 'claims' territory of the proper nation. Check out illegal argie military activity in the Antarctic. Fortunately, British submarines can break through the ice and open fire.

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/southamerica/falklandislands/11501211/Argentina-wouldnt-dare-to-invade-the-Falklands-again-says-Colonel-Tim-Collins.html
Getting past the Royal Navy would be a challenge. In the South Atlantic, the Royal Navy deploys at least one of the new Daring Class Type 45 destroyers. Doesn’t sound much; but with each one capable of tracking up to 1,000 targets from 400Km simultaneously and engaging up to 300 targets in layers from 120 km to 30 km (provided the targets are larger than a tennis ball)
In effect, if all the serviceable attack aircraft in all of Latin America – including Cuba – were attacking the Falklands, a Type 45 could cope comfortably.
Argentine Navy? With 17 war ships
The bulk of the navy is confined to port because of a lack of spares and engine problems. The ships’ on-board ordnance is past its sell-by date. There isn’t even the money for petrol to run the engines. One of the corvettes, Spiro (P 43), is out of service having run aground. So is one of the elderly submarines, Santa Cruz. The Submarine fleet has achieved a grand total of 19 hours of submerged training since 2012 against a minimum requirement of 190 days.
Training is very poor. The list of disasters is endless. The Sarandi – one of the destroyers – managed to damage the Brazilian Frigate Rademaker by firing on her during joint naval exercises, injuring four Brazilian sailors and an Argentine observer when her fire control system went haywire.
The Destroyer Santisima Trinidad capsized and sank at anchor due to poor maintenance. the ships up to 40 years old and with the RN’s submarine fleet not even considered.

What on earth does Malvinas cater for us in 2015?

We were deflowered in 1833 ... Arg did nothing for over 50 years ... now we peacefully claim: Hey you shit ... this land is ours!!!

Just look at the facts Enrique, we Argies love to play the victim role, but do very little to improve ourselves.
For any practical purposes, Malvinas is clearly out of our league. We'd rather focus on improving our living standards than looking out on a fantasy lost cause.

#87 Posts an enigmatic poem in Spanish and you reply with a video of an Irish band whose name is the war cry of the Campbell clan.
This group give a biased anti-English song about the Jacobite rising forgetting or omitting the fact that more Scots were against the rising than were for it AND that there were regiments of Scots...including Highlanders,(Campbells))....on the govt. side at Culloden.
I am rather surprised at your liking for this song as you proffer a hatred of all things European and the Irish appear more European focussed than the British.

Well congratulations on once again proving my point about European education, and in particular Anglo knowledge of other cultures, music, writers, etc. Non-existent. Your life scope is so limited and narrow it is not even worth to make fun of.
Imagine only listening to rock bands from only one English county, or readings books from authors from one single village. That's the analogy of the Anglo scope on life vs most people in the rest of the world.
Sad existence and you will die not know 90% of the great things of this world.

@29. Drunk again? £180 million over 10 years is £18 million a year. The current UK defence budget is £45.6 billion. It works out to less than 0.04%.
Mar 29th, 2015 - 02:20 pm - Link - Report abuse 0@40. Yeah, right. You don't know much about British armed forces, do you? Especially NCOs and commissioned officers. We ALWAYS say things like that. We said it about the Zulus after Rorke's Drift. French and Spanish after Trafalgar. French after Waterloo. Germans after WW1. Germans after the Battle of Britain. Germans after WW2. We say it after we've won. Just to remind ourselves of how good we are.
@43. Just as a matter of interest, because it's long in the past, let me mention the Battle of Rorke's Drift. over 22-23 January 1879. 139-141 British Army regulars, 11 colonial troops and 4 civilians defended the mission station against 3,000 to 4,000 Zulus. Now, replace the British troops with argentines. Want to guess the likely result?
@53. I don't understand why 650 kilometres should be such an insurmountable barrier. As I recall, Pacific Islanders used to paddle thousands of kilometres. But argies can't paddle across the Argentine Sea?

The only decent rock bands were anglos. No Latam/Hispanics were any use at it.
As to literature I have read French literature ...in French, some Indian, Japanese, Chinese, German, Italian, Russian, Icelandic, Swedish, Norwegian, Danish, Greek etc but nothing Argentinian as I don't believe anything worthwhile emanated from that place. Your postings have only reinforced that belief.
As to dying and only knowing 10% of the things in the world, I take that as a complement as I would have put it at o.oooo1% at a guess

Mar 29th, 2015 - 08:32 pm - Link - Report abuse 0Something I noticed in the times replies, true or not, it was interesting.
It might encourage a few sentiments,
• The British Army has served alongside the Argentine contingent (regular army/marines) in the Cyprus United Nations operation UNFICYPT for quite some time now, the opinion of them being that they motivated and well trained. A Australian Federal Police senior officer (a former regular army commando officer) made comment to me recently when he returned after a 12 month tour, that the Argy troops were far more switched on, and fit, than the three British Army Reserve units that came through whilst he on the island
Equally, in other UN operations similar comments have been made by other armed forces.
Since the current US administration the Argentine armed forces have received a great deal of training and combat support equipment such as parachutes and airdrop equipment, helicopters, FM radios and the list goes on. Equally China has been giving immense amounts of support, financial, technical, physical and moral over recent years.
It soldiers are now all volunteers, of a high physical standard, and a good quality of education. The various corps training schools turn out motivated fit young soldiers, led by well trained corporals and senior NCOs. Equally their officers are of a similar standard. The army is vastly different to that of 1982.
Apart from normal exercises, every combat unit also attends a battle school for a 2 or 3 week course each year. According to a US Marine Corps officer they are virtually clones of those run by the French Army, and the training is tough and appropriate. A lot of the army's training is imaginative, and is training for war not counter-insurgency.
Their special forces are all trained on French army or the Navy's Fusiler Marin's principles.
In every way it is a different force to that of 1982.
If the Argentines want to play at soldiers, all they have to do is make a special forces raid on the Falkland’

Argentina's best path is to end its harassment of the islands, just quietly drop the matter from official business (if really needed just press a small memo every year reaffirming there is a ”dispute), and then end diplomatic relations with the United Kingdom, United States, Canada, and possibly Australia. We should not have relations with racist, nazi-ideological nations.

Whether the Argentinian claim has merit or not is irrelevant.
Mar 31st, 2015 - 08:11 am - Link - Report abuse 0No, it's not. The merits of the Argentinian claim are quite relevant. If the Argentinian claim has no merit (as the facts prove undisputably), then they have no moral or legal right to complain about Britain's right to ensure viable self-defense measures are in place on the Falkland Islands.
The UK will be returning the Malvinas within 25 years in any case.
Can't return what never belonged to you in the first place.
Far more likely that Argentina will drop it's false claim and agree to stop lying (as you should do).
In response to those that do not agree that my hypothetical scenario would result in successful invasion by Argentina. Well here is my response to some of the points i have seen raised.
Mar 31st, 2015 - 09:09 am - Link - Report abuse 0Yes they do have transport planes capable of para-dropping troops and cargo such as tanks and artillery. They have 5 Hercules transport planes and 1 super Hercules. Yes they may well be only able to carry 75-100 troops. However out of the 1000 troops at Mount Pleasant, only 150-200 of them are actual infantry, the rest are grounds crew and support staff (i.e. non combat roles) so just 5 Hercules with 75 para troopers would mean the argentines would have over 375 troops compared to our 150-200 infantry.
The Argentines will launch an air attack against mount pleasant first, not necessary all of their 18 jets at once, but in groups of four every couple of hours. Are all 4 typhoons combat ready at any one time? no only two (at best 3) are ready for combat at anyone time and can the typhoons remain in the air without refueling or rearming to take down all 18 Argentine jets? No they can not, therefore if the typhoons are not shot down its highly likely they will be destroyed whilst on the ground refueling by one of the waves of attack Argentine jets. Same for the rapier, there's only 1 on islands, it can not take out all Argentine jets not shot down by the typhoons. This isn't a quality, technology and pilot training, experience scenario, its a numbers scenario. Simple fact is the Argentine numbers make it possible to take out the typhoons and the rapier.
Anyone who thinks 4 typhoons and 1 rapier system can take out 18 or more jets are stupidly ignorant. Yes our forces are personnel are among one of the best in the world, but no one is as good or as capable, against such numbers of jets attacking, as some here would like to believe! Hell we lost 5 ships in 1982, that was with far more than 4 harriers and 1 x anti air defense battery's (landborne and shipborne) to defend them!!!

Mar 31st, 2015 - 12:08 pm - Link - Report abuse 0Interesting scenario. That would be a declaration of war with all it's consequences for Argentina. However, you are omitting the retaliation of sub. launched cruise missiles taking out targets in Argentina. They have NO defence against these. Would it be worth the gamble ?
Another assumption you make is that ALL the Argentinian aircraft would be serviceable and have fully trained crews in all aspects of this mission. If they are configured for air-ground attack, then they are sitting ducks. The typhoon can carry 6 bvraam and 2 sraam and remain on combat patrol for 3 hours at a range of 110 nm.
It is a fact that against Eastern produced fighters provided with Thrust Vectoring, throughout the years the Typhoon has showed an embarrassing (for them) kill-to-loss ratio.
Read the following article. If the Typhoon can take on the F-22, I think it could cope with chinese produced fighters. Read the following:-
http://www.businessinsider.com/f-22-wont-win-a-dogfight-thrust-vectoring-raptor-typhoon-eurofighter-2013-2#ixzz3VxnyRPwm
Also, do you think that the prelude to thisinvasion could be kept secret from the UK ? I am sure that word of this would be reaching the MOD and suitable action to reinforce the garrison would be made.
As to dropping heavy armoured tanks in the Falklands, my impression is that you could not find a more unsuitable terrain for tank warfare . I may stand to be corrected but boggy ground is not best suited for this kind of warfare.
You can't compare a battle 32 years ago and draw the same conclusions today.
Again, these are only my opinions and are as valid as yours.

You said that about China last year.... Or was it the year before?
Mar 31st, 2015 - 01:55 pm - Link - Report abuse 0You couldn't predict tomorrow's weather, not even next week....
Well firstly the response from Sub launched cruise missiles would be limited, we don't have an endless supply of them, whilst yes they could take out Argentine airbases they would not target civilian airports, and Argentina can simply land any returning jets there as well as take of from those civilian airports. Frankly once Mount Pleasant has been taken by Argentine forces, who probably would only take Artillery and mortars with them and not tanks. What no matter how many cruise missiles aimed at airfields on the mainland will stop that. Once they have control of mount pleasant that's its, we will have lost the islands. So the cruise missile response would only cause temporarily damaged that could easily be repaired well before we can get any sort of task force down there.
Mar 31st, 2015 - 01:56 pm - Link - Report abuse 0As for the typhoons, yes they would win against an F-22, but your missing my point. As good as the typhoons are and as good as the pilot flying them, they won't last long against 18 Argentine jets. 4 v 18 means each typhoon will have 4 or 5 Argentine jets targeting it if Argentine attacks with all 18 or more of their new jets in one swoop. And if they come in low and below radar, well bye bye typhoons as they wouldn't even get on to the runway let alone in to the area. That's how quick it could be.
As for intelligence as to a MOD knowing about a planned invasion - May they will, but they wouldn't know what the actual plan was, as only those in the need to know in Argentina would know!
You also missed the point of the my comparison to 1982 and the present. Point was, we had more airplanes and anti aircraft defenses back then, than what are in the Falklands now, and Argentine planes in 1982 attacked mostly in pairs or groups of 4 in waves. They still sank 5 of our ships and damaged other ships. So it would take them long to take out one rapier and 4 typhoons if they attacked with all 18 jets at once or in waves.
Being over confident is the biggest mistake we can make. We're not invincible!

Anyhoo China isn't ever going to make it to a developed country. It has more debt than the USA. Its reserves are not enough to fix what ails it. Only a market correction will do it. That will bring mass civil unrest.

retard.
You do realize they've been stimulating the economy for 8 years and its run out of steam.
They have so much debt all that is left are Zombie banks with worthless assets.
You do know all this I presume.
What you are postulating IS that Argentina could mount a surprise attack with ALL of it's forces without the UK having any warning.
Mar 31st, 2015 - 05:23 pm - Link - Report abuse 0No one would notice personnel being recalled from leave, a build up of forces travelling to selected airfields and increased radio traffic.
All this would show up on satellites and intercepts at GCHQ.
There would also be a need for the Argentine Air force to practice the attack formations and a large scale air drop.
You are missing my point. The Typhoon could take out 6 incoming aircraft beyond visual range before they were even detected. If it came to a dog-fight the chinese built aircraft would have no chance. Also if you mean attacking in a wave of 18 aircraft, the chances are that the Argentinian's would shoot down some of their own aircraft in a melee. The airport at Stanley could take Typhoons. They only need a runway 300 metres long to get airborne with a combat load and landing with reverse thrust is just as feasible .
This is a typical take off by a Typhoon and I would estimate this at about 250 metres having spent upwards of 35 years photographing aircraft from this spot.
www.youtube.com/watch?v=tkP2dfjjgCg
In dis-similar combat exercises the Typhoons of the RAF and German air force creamed their larger opposition forces with no losses.
I think you are being over pessimistic. In 1982 our air cover was based on two carriers with Sea Harriers with what would now be called a primitive airborne radar system and a short range. I am not sure what you mean by more anti-aircraft defenses in 1982. As far as I know we had none when Argentina invaded.
Even if Argentina had the aircraft now, it would take a minimum of 2 years to get the crews and engineering staff up to combat readiness..
I don't think we are being complacent, but realistic in our ability to defend the Falklands.
As I said, we would be in a state of war with Argentina with all the consequences if a surprise attack took place. I think the possibility is slim.

Mar 31st, 2015 - 05:48 pm - Link - Report abuse 0You are assuming that Argentina could, “acquire” 18 combat aircraft and all the necessary trimmings with combat ready pilots, as well as all the other capabilities (which they currently do not have for such an undertaking) required.
With nobody noticing, not even the Chileans.
Fair to say the current deployment is equal to the current threat posed.
However if the threat increased, for any reason, it is reasonable to assume the British would increase their deployment accordingly.
Those 18 aircraft could be met by much more than just 4 Typhoons.
Also it is somewhat difficult to come in “below the radar” over 400 miles of ocean, with the curvature of the planet as the only thing to hide behind.
Since the current US administration the Argentine armed forces have received a great deal of training and combat support equipment such as parachutes and airdrop equipment, helicopters, FM radios and the list goes on. Equally China has been giving immense amounts of support, financial, technical, physical and moral over recent years.

Their special forces are all trained on French army or the Navy's Fusiler Marin's principles.
In every way it is a different force to that of 1982.

Argentine special forces are feared to be preparing some sort of landing on the Falklands,
The elite unit could occupy one or two of the 700 islands around the Falklands,
Any landing would cause an international incident etc etc,
It only takes one landing to gain CFK her victory and humiliate Britain,
Rumours of training by USA military and French military are worrying,
See more.
So they say…
.
Rumours, exactly. I am sure our military would be aware of this from contacts in the U.S and French armed forces.
Mar 31st, 2015 - 09:59 pm - Link - Report abuse 0If they landed then we would bomb the shit out of them. We still have 12 Squadron equipped with Tornados at RAF Lossiemouth. They are up-to-speed having spent time in Afghanistan and could be down there within a couple of days.
But again, what is the problem. We have it in tablets of stone that the Argentinians will never again use force but only seek a peaceful negotiated solution to THEIR problem.
The methods of war have changed in the last thirty years...it's now all about removing the enemy's ability to propagate a war...communications, arms caches, airfields etc....

http://www.defensenews.com/story/defense/policy-budget/budget/2015/03/31/white-house-lifts-freeze-on-egyptian-weapon-sales/70718296/
WASHINGTON — The White House lifted an executive hold on weapon sales to Argentina Tuesday, as part of a broader attempt to modernize the military relationship between the two countries.
President Obama informed Argentinian President Christina Fernandez kirchner of the change in the administration's posture,
In a statement announcing the change, National Security Council spokeswoman Bernadette Meehan noted that the administration has been tracking the Argentine situation since that 1982 freeze went into effect.
”
There are both immediate and long-term impacts of the change in posture. In the short term, the US will clear the sale of 12 F-16 aircraft, 20 Harpoon missiles and up to 125 M1A1 Abrams tank kits, which had been held up. Obama has also pledged $1.3 billion in foreign military financing (FMF) for argentina.
That is good news for both an argentinian military that has been awaiting upgraded equipment, in its stance against the British,
Also in 2018, the FMF funding for Argentina will be targeted to four specific categories – counterterrorism, border security, maritime security and an improved modern navy – as well as sustainment for existing weapons. Although not stated in the news release, guiding how FMF dollars are used will allow the US to help shape Argentina military strategies against her enemies
.
In a statement, House Armed Services Committee chairman Rep. Mac Thornberry, R-TX., praised the decision.
We encourage the government of argentina to continue its democratic process, and the recovery of its or any lost territory, Thornberry said. But argentina is also a strong regional ally. Maintaining that relationship must be a priority for the U.S. Email: amehta@defensenews.com

Apr 01st, 2015 - 02:58 pm - Link - Report abuse 0Flying under the radar is easier to do over the sea than it is over land. Your forgetting what the term flying under the radar stems from. Well if the radar transmitter was at a height of 70ft above sea level (am not saying this is the case for the radar at mount pleasant or the type or capabilities of the radar system there), then anything flying below an altitude of 70ft over the sea would be below the radar level and unlikely to be picked up on radar until its too late to respond or scramble our jets.
As for training and preparing the Argentine pilots to be combat ready, well that won't take long at all, a matter of 3-6 months after the new jets arrive and the planes and pilots will be combat ready. As for their being more than 4 typhoons or even other fight jets at mount pleasant? Its possible, but i doubt they'll be more than 6 at most, with only 2-4 on scramble alert at anyone time! And even then, if the Argentine jets fly in below the radar our planes may not even get the chance to get of the ground!

Apr 02nd, 2015 - 05:10 pm - Link - Report abuse 0Simple geometry, Radars are in effect “line of sight”, when placed on mountains such as in Cyprus or other Island locations, they see down to sea level including wave height, for some considerable distance (shall we say). Until the earth’s surface curves away.
T45 Destroyers are designed to deal with swarm attacks and have a what, 30 meter tower with radar on top, look at the effective distance of that system and it will give you some idea.
If the British had any time to reinforce (Argentina getting new aircraft would be the cue) then with just SAM and shoulder launched systems in place, 18 aircraft would last minutes at best, before you even engage Typhoons.
Which would be better engaged in an anti-shipping role.
#234
Apr 02nd, 2015 - 06:30 pm - Link - Report abuse 0Argentine pilots would NOT be ready to fly the new aircraft within 3/6 months.
My understanding is that the current Argentine air force have very little fast jet training at present. They would have to convert to the new aircraft and be proficient in it's handling characteristics. Then they would have to go to a tactical training unit to learn how to use it's radar, weapon systems and practice low level flying for long distances over the sea with no radio communication. Then be proficient in air to air refuelling.
First of all, they will have to train a cadre of pilots to train both air to air and ground attack skills. These are not interchangeable.
If the experiences of other airforces are followed then the chances are of losing a couple of aircraft/pilots in training.
In addition, the ground crews have to be trained in all aspects of the aircraft's maintenance.
For RAF pilots who were already proficient in flying the Typhoon, it took a lot longer than your timescale to be combat ready for the ground attack role.
At RAF Lossiemouth we have two dedicated air defence squadrons and one configured for ground attack.
You are suggesting that the Argentine pilots are superior to those of the RAF or USAAF or USMC in acquiring combat skills. Not likely.

If Argentina is serious then it has to build it up very slowly,
And when they think they are ready,
Then a decision will have to be made,

Every decision will have a consequence,
In this case, I would say in all honesty
