    Why?

Having been there, the only credible threat that Cuba poses to the US is in the Olympic boxing, judo and wrestling spheres. It seems counterproductive to keep holding a grudge over the failings of the petit Machiavellis of the US State department from more than fifty years ago. Having a cordial neighbour who you can readily access is far better for the spleen than an outright hostile one who you can't.

Besides which, Obama will be looking to his legacy. “Solving” the Middle East is looking just as unlikely as it has for most of the last century, Moscow is being just as, if not more, belligerent as Russia as it was as the USSR, China just keeps growing to its own inscrutable agenda, the best thing that you can say about him from the European view is that he was better than the alternatives (remember how well Romney did during his pre-Olympics visit), so any win (even if it's the obvious one of not being nasty to your neighbour because you don't like their politics) is still a win.

Who knows, in a few months time, following this example, maybe Christina will start thinking of looking for a win of her own?
