Guyana is turning to the United Nations to reach a legal settlement in its border dispute with Venezuela, describing Caracas’ claim of a portion of maritime space where oil was recently discovered as “a baseless and shameless attempt” at usurping Guyana’s territory. Read full article

It must be quite handy, when you're a collapsing demagoguery, that your designated external enemy is of a different ethnic and cultural background to you. That should help get the rest of the PIMPLE (*) bloc on board, as in the case of the
    the Falklands.

The Minister's language is a lot more diplomatic than mine would've been were I he, replete, as it would be, with many colourful anglo-saxonisms, the last two words of which would be ____you!

I wonder if they're regretting their support for Argentina over the Falklands yet?

Does anyone know of a map online that highlights the contested claims?
I've read bits elsewhere that summarise the claim as bonkers but I can't find anything that depicts how bonkers it is.

Done my best to research this. It's typical of latam 'countries' to declare things null and void when they are found to be inconvenient. Possibly a nice posting for the RN and USN. Conducting coastal bombardment on venezuela.

.... despite decrying UK support for the Falklands

I imagine the UK will support them regardless, but people who live in glass houses shouldn't support stone throwers.

We should cut immediately any foreign aid to Guyana and fully support Venezuela to get their territory returned which was unjustly stolen back in 1833 apparently.

You really could not make this kind of shit up. The UK should tell Guyana come out with a statement denouncing Argentine lies and aggression then the UK will support Guyana until which our mouths are zipped.

@13. We should be 'measured'. I didn't know that we sent aid to Guyana. So, yes, cut it off. And no RN presence either. Unless we can broadcast videos to Guyanian tvs showing British sailors laughing their heads off as venezuela attacks.

Venezuela claims the whole of Essiquibo province which makes up two thirds of Guyanas terretory. The province appears as with the mythical Malvinas with Argentina as Venezuelas national terretory on their maps.
Suriname also claims a smaller slice of Guyana.
Interesting to see which way the cats will jump in the future.

I just find it two faced of Guyana who in its support to Argentina, denies the rights of the islanders,

yet claim they have rights, its seems ok for Argentina to claim the islands,
but not ok for Venezuela to take their territory,

    two faced I think,
and no the British government should not get involved .
    just my opinion

Not much Guyana can do, it has virtually no Navy no armed forces. Venezuela is at the verge of collapse, but its far too big. It can just walk over Guyana. Surprisingly it hasn't done so, so far.

Maybe not quite yet. Venezuelan politicians are calling for a “defensive military mobilization” to counter aggression from the 600,000 strong population of Guyana.

We owe Guyana nothing, they have turned their backs on the UK 'other than happily receiving significant handouts from us'. The way they have treated a fellow Commonwealth member in their own back yard is disgusting.

Let Venezuela do what they will.

All this is really just a provocation for the US, Maduros chosen enemy, to intervene on Guyanas behalf

Guyana has certainly betrayed the Falkland Islanders, and the wider Commonwealth, with its tacit support for Argentina. However, I believe it is right for the UK to stand up for Guyana. Firstly, despite their betrayal, Guyana is still a member of the Commonwealth. Secondly, the UK has a history of intervening even when it is not in its interest but is nevertheless right. Thirdly, Venezuelan politicians can't be allowed to mess up another country.

Moreover, Guyana's support may be driven by a desire not to alienate the rest of the continent, particularly important if you face being bullied by your big neighbour.
