The U.S. House of Representatives on Friday dealt a stunning blow to President Barack Obama’s free-trade agenda. A large number of Democrats in the House defied their fellow Democratic president to defeat a critical part of a legislative package, Trade Adjustment Assistance (TAA), which would have provided aid to US workers who might lose their jobs if a major Asia-Pacific trade agreement is forged.     The problem is that the median US wage has been falling since the Reagan administration. And the free trade agreements from NAFTA through to KORUS have just accelerated this metric.

    It is a red herring to suggest that the TPP is needed in order to maintain US supremacy in Asia and the world. The question is does this supremacy work in the favor of the American people. The answer is it does not. And neither will the TPP.
