LATAM Airlines Group will consolidate all its carriers, including Lan Airlines and Tam Linhas Aéreas S.A., into a single brand over the next three years, the company announced Thursday. Since Lan and Tam merged in 2012, they've operated as separate brands, but the parent company's goal has been to provide a carrier that can provide seamless coverage to the entire South American continent. What a complete mistake to make!

I thought they wanted to grow the business in the Northern Hemisphere and calling it LATAM is going to do this? They can't have thought this through, isn't Aerolineas Argieshiteras in LATAM? Isn't that going to ride on the coat tails of LATAM or, more correctly, LATAM is going to suffer the same very low reputation so deserved by the argie morons?

We always travel LAN, no other carrier is acceptable, especially Iberia with their terrible LatAm level of dis-service.

Chris, please explain. I loyally fly LAN and although TAM is a tier below, this is not much different from LAN Argentina or LAN Peru. What am I missing?

BTW: many years ago, despite my wise financial counsel, my independent minded wife, sold her shares in CTC and used the proceeds to buy the first public offering of LAN Chile. She has never sold the shares and constantly gloats about what they're now worth...

    Surely this is progress?

But will they service Venezuela, whose government is still refusing to pay the $4 Billion still owing to various international carriers?

    @ 2 Chicureo

I always think of LAN and TAM as being interchangeable.

My real concern that anything called LATAM is considered second rate at best which is clearly not the case.

Does it really matter that there are two airline names from one entity on a contract? I fail to see it myself. People don't expect EUROCAR to be operated directly by the Franchise company but by a local company with local knowledge tied contractually to the Franchise for service level security and recognise that is the case.

BTW, good choice by your wife, I would let her do the rest of it if I were you! :o)

90% of people outside the region won't even know what LatAm means. Just as most have no idea what QANTAS means and who wouldn't have known what bmi stood for either.

LATAM isn't taking on some moniker that will prejudice people to expect a certain standard. However by rebranding they are becoming the dominant airline in the region. A region that sorely needs a dose of competition.

By becoming dominant and then expanding outwards they can hopefully reduce the exorbitant prices it takes to get there from this side of the Pacific. I only have 2 choices to get to a South America. Via Santiago or via LAX. And Santiago is bloody expensive to fly to be aside there is no competition.
