The Spanish Government’s measures toward Gibraltar are ‘bearing fruit, Spain’s Foreign Minister Jose Manuel García-Margallo said in a weekend interview in which he vowed to maintain pressure on the Rock. Although the minister’s tough language on Gibraltar was nothing new, it was the second time within the space of a week that he had spoken out on the Rock. Read full article

Aug 27th, 2015 - 06:05 am - Link - Report abuse 0What does he mean by bearing fruit? Gibraltar is no more likely to join with Spain than it was last year or the year before etc. He seems to be confusing hand-waving with progress.
Aug 27th, 2015 - 07:05 am - Link - Report abuse 0I've always wondered what invisible fruits looks like....
Aug 27th, 2015 - 07:52 am - Link - Report abuse 0Now I know! And I'm quite unimpressed.
Not one mention of what this fruit is.
Aug 27th, 2015 - 08:13 am - Link - Report abuse 0All I can see is the Spanish making fools of them by acting spitefully towards a neighbour that won't surrender to them and which they can do nothing about.
García-Margallo said relations between the UK and Spain were very important, adding that as EU and NATO partners the two countries shared common values and principles.
Aug 27th, 2015 - 08:18 am - Link - Report abuse 0Quite clearly, this isn't the case.
EU is of course as useful as a chocolate teapot in any kind of situation that requires fairness to people living in Gibraltar. Definitely time to leave this defunct single issue organisation that is only focused on crushing Greece at the moment.
Aug 27th, 2015 - 08:52 am - Link - Report abuse 0He noted that the Rock’s 30,000 inhabitants had the world’s third highest per capita income. Curious that, I found Gibraltar to be joint 24th with Taiwan.
Aug 27th, 2015 - 10:50 am - Link - Report abuse 0The EU is, of course, largely irrelevant. It has no jurisdiction on the subjects of sovereignty or territoriality. One therefore wonders how it thought it had the authority to agree a spanish environmental protection area within British Gibraltar Territorial Waters. It was right, of course, for Britain and Gibraltar to take the matter to an EU court to have the area to be declared illegal. How strange that their case has repeatedly refused, on technical grounds, by a spanish judge. The spanish judge should be replaced, forthwith, by a judge of a more appropriate nationality. How about a Danish judge?
The only 'fruit' Gollum 2 is going to suck on is sour grapes.
Aug 27th, 2015 - 11:16 am - Link - Report abuse 0Perhaps that explains his sour puss look and waving the flies away from his shit-head while he is talking impresses nobody.
Same old, same old, I just love the hypocrisy Gollum 2 is showing here:
García-Margallo was also asked what he thought of Gibraltar Chief Minister Fabian Picardo. “I have not spoken to him nor had correspondence with him,” he told ABC.
“He says some pretty strange things and acts more on electoral criteria than what is good for Gibraltar”, concluded García-Margallo.
Ha, ha, ha. I think he should start looking at Picardo as a role model; he might just come to his senses.
Bearing Fruit........????? WTF
Aug 27th, 2015 - 11:35 am - Link - Report abuse 0call me old fashioned but i dont see any fruit bearing from the spaniards point of view, lets see numerous reported incursions into Gibraltars waters, forced border delays, and catalonia pushing more for independance, strained relationionships with UK and gibraltar , what have they gained sweet FA....
oh yes sounds like massive progress, Deluded imbeciles.
Self-Determination who do those apples taste im guessing sour.
Bearing fruit must be Seville Oranges then.
Aug 27th, 2015 - 11:49 am - Link - Report abuse 0Trying to bully and upset Gibraltar is the same act as trying to bully and upset the UK. The UK has already compared the current Spanish government with that of Argentina in the way it is treating Gibraltar, that is about the most offensive insult we could impart on any country. I can't see how he feels the relationship has not been damaged, because it has.
Aug 27th, 2015 - 02:44 pm - Link - Report abuse 0Always a good idea to go to http://gibraltarpanorama.gi/ to see how Gibraltar sees things. And, occasionally, offer advice. Like arming Royal Gibraltar Police personnel and vessels with a defend yourself or even a shoot first policy. Like deploying suitable British forces. Anyone British should be demanding that their MP explain why the RN Gibraltar Squadron only has two 16 metre patrol launches and three RHIBs. When it would be better off with four new-build, as a matter of urgency, corvettes. Armed and armoured hovercraft. Attack helicopters. See what the spanish do before bringing in tanks and self-propelled artillery. Although armed drones might be a good idea.

In the supermarket today no Spanish fruit or vegetables went in the trolley and no Spanish or Argentinian wine. Instead excellent Chilean and Portuguese wines plus fruit and veg from elsewhere.
Aug 27th, 2015 - 04:50 pm - Link - Report abuse 0You reap what you sow.
Thank you Captain for your excellent consideration of Chilean wine! With just a few high quality exceptions, Argentine wine has dramatically declined due to economic pressures. Our wines from Chile are an exceptional value and quality.

SPAIN SEEKS TO DEFUSE SVA ROW - REPORT
Spain has signalled its “full willingness” to improve cross-border law enforcement cooperation with Gibraltar, according to a press report in Spain.
The left-leaning El Pais said the Spanish Government was seeking to defuse the fallout from last Saturday’s incident at sea, during which warning shots were fired
https://twitter.com/GibMariner
but still demanding its theirs,
Gibraltar has demanded that the UK government does something instead of talk talk.
But of course the British government struggling heavily with yellow and white stripes finds it hard nowadays to say YES, as being mates is cheaper,
Just my opinion.
besides Spain letting Russian ships into her territory finds nothing wrong.
boy what strange allies we keep.
*19 - what strange allies we keep- you say.
Aug 29th, 2015 - 02:40 pm - Link - Report abuse 0Spain can say the same and with more reason. What strange allies we
keep ( UK) who are are Spain´s EU and Nato partner AND YET THEY HAVE A COLONY IN SPAIN.
what Spain does with its port (Ceuta) is up to them and nobody else.
Actualy now that theyare letting the Russians into Ceuta. I ask myself
why are they not letting the Russians into the other enclave called
Mellilla. Handsome profits to be made....
you opinion only and not even true,
Aug 29th, 2015 - 07:45 pm - Link - Report abuse 0gibralter is not a colony as you well know,
Spain is breaking international rules on abusing and intimidating Gibraltar,
as for the Spanish colonies,
we both now that Spain, like France incorporated them into their country as an excuse not to call them colonies, and get around the whole legal thing,
but of course from your point of view Britain should make Gibraltar and the Falkland's a part of Britain,
then Spain and Argentina could not complain could they,
your anti British views are well known,
Spain has no right to intimidate abuse or threaten the people of Gibraltar,
you will disagree with this,
thus-
your opinion-my opinion.
and Gibraltar will remain British regardless.
