Bring back Lula QUICK, before he croaks!

He does look as though his cancer is on the way back or perhaps it's the worry of having his teeth knocked out in prison AND having to bend over!

    GREAT.

@4. It's difficult to put a criminal in power. Except for a criminal country. There's no doubt that LULU is a criminal. Just a clever criminal where the evidence is still being collected. Has LULU had all his accounts investigated? And he gets the money for his current political activities from where? He's a crook. Put him in a cell and torture him until he explains how he did it!

    Hi Jack,

You know although your country is in recession, over the past few months here in Santiago, the city has been overflowing with Brazilian tourists. Wherever you go to lunch or dinner, you here Portuguese being spoken.

The talk however here among Chilean businessmen is that of concern, because if the recession in your country is going to be as severe as some are predicting, our economy (wAlthough not as dependent as other Latin countries) will be hit hard as well. Do you think that Lula and Dilma will be eventually incarcerated or get away with nearly destroying Brazil?

    @8 Chicureo
Good question. The unstable political atmosphere here, at the moment , is obviously the result of the PT's and their allies' actions. First, you've got Dilma overspending in 2013/14 in order to try to impress the population. The result we all know : a whopping deficit in public accounts. Instead of a primary superavit of R$ 99 billion, a massive primary deficit of 19 billion. This tendency had already been verified in 2013, when although a superavit was posted, it was way below the projected figure. Despite this, they kept on spending - and stealing. So, besides the igross incompetence in managing the public accounts, things became worse when compounded by the discovery of the corruption at Petrobras - a continuation of the 'mensalão', with many of the same players involved, even some of those condemned but enjoying light sentences. With all this, plus the perspetive that the corruption has in fact spread to all State -run companies, and especially the BNDES, the lack of confidence to invest has slown the economy down to a standstill, and now, officially in recession. The PT however still does not admit they have any blame ...it's always the same old story, it's the international crisis...the effects of which Lula classified as insignificant as far as Brazil was concerned...Now, Dilma has admitted it was more like a tsunami, but still refuses to admit guilt. The fact is that to the PT, the only truth is their truth. That Dilma is/was corrupt , is doubtfull...she's more like a victim in that she was forced to play along with Lulla, who without a doubt is up to his eyeballs in shit...but discovering the proof is another matter. Lulla has obviously hidden the product of his theft through others, who are now taking the fall for him. On the other hand, with what is already out in the open, Dilma could be impeached. But to answer your question, this is Brazil, and no-one knows what will happen.

    Jack,

Thanks for the analysis. In Chile as you well know, we have a moderate Socialist, who's son's “hand was caught in the cookie jar”, but in all fairness corruption on all sides of the political spectrum has been minor for our continent.

New investment has somewhat dried up as Bachelet's administration's new tax laws have made Chile less desirable. She made outrageous expensive promises for several programs, especially free university education, that are going to be very difficult to pay for. Complicating matters is that we derive directly an important part of our national income from copper who's prices are currently averaging $2.25 a pound, 27% lower than last year's levels and near a six-year low. China is our number one export market, I need to say little more.

The good news for Chile, with the exception of the region near Punta Arenas, is benefiting tremendously with low cost petroleum imports.

    ¡Saludos!

@10. It's a pity about Chile but, barring a miracle, Brazil's fate is sealed. I recall what happened under a Labour government in Britain. It was spend, spend, spend, borrow, borrow, borrow. And so many other things that were bad for Britain, while the Labour Party was “the saviour”. And, at the end, when the people could see what was happening and voted differently, the Labour Party left a little note with a joke on it. It said “I'm afraid to tell you there's no money left”. Very funny - not!

The only answer was “austerity”. Because the country had to be rebuilt. And it is being rebuilt. But still labouring under incredible burdens. The constant demands for money by the EU, the mass immigration, legal and illegal, that Labour liked because it gave more grateful voters, the benefit culture. And the devolution that persuaded a chancer like Salmond that it was time for scottish independence.

I can't tell you exactly what is in store for Brazil, but you should get the idea. The matter of Petrobras is a symptom. I gather similar corruption and fraud is being found in Eletrobras. It's probably the same in all the state-controlled industries.

You say “She made outrageous expensive promises for several programs, especially free university education, that are going to be very difficult to pay for.” Surely Chileans have the sense to see that, whatever she promised, it was they who would be paying? What government has its own money? For most, if not all, countries, major promises should be seen as warning signs. They are bribes.

As for whether Lula and Dilma get their just desserts, that's a matter of proof. But start with https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dilma_Rousseff and follow through the links about corruption. Are Dilma and Lula stupid? Because they are either stupid or corrupt.

That their judgement should be questioned is fair enough. As the the Harry S. Truman adage said “The buck stops here” was right on the money. But your grand flourish “Are Dilma and Lula stupid? I could not agree with you more. Chile does have some positive advantages during this crisis. First is that culturally corruption is rare here. Police are especially honest. That may not really impress someone from Europe, but in Latin America it's rare. Same thing for our regulatory authorities and our independent central bank.

The result is that we have an outstanding credit rating and a conservative national budget that is normally balanced each year.

As far as the to intelligence of both Lula and Dilma, I can assure to that they are both very intelligent, cunning and resourceful. They are exceptionally good at diverting billions of Dollars in state revenues into the hands of their political cronies offshore bank accounts.

Anyone that has had serious business dealings in Brazil will attest to the outrageous widespread government corruption in Brazil. (I personally was involved in an agricultural irrigation project in Petrolina during 2004-2009. It was not as terrible as Argentina is, but I was appalled.)

You can find countless references to the problem on the internet. Forbes published an article quoting solid sources that the level of corruption in 2013 was estimated to cost the nation over an astounding 53 billion Dollars a year.

Unless you consult some mindless PT marsupial, any Brazilian with an IQ above 60 will tell tell you Lula and Dilma have been very much aware and part of the theft.

Terence, I guess you don't read the news much.

Currently, Brazilian judicial authorities are investigating more than 90 politicians, of which most are members of the Worker's Party on alleged kickbacks paid to win contracts with Petrobras. Other government investigations have began of other state-run companies with similar accusations. Rousseff’s previous chief of staff, Senator Gleisi Helena Hoffmann, is under investigation for graft and police have detained the former treasurer of her Workers’ Party for laundering money. The Worker's Party obviously deny the allegations, and it's interesting that both Lula and Dilma participated on the board of directors of several companies now being probed.

The thing that disgusts the world is that these “public good” Socialists have been stealing state funds destined to assist improve the lives of the downtrodden and poor.

You may eventually be proved correct. But until then, certainly they're entitled like every one else to the benefit of the doubt.

    FOLHA DE S.PAULO 08/24/2015
“There Are No Reasons to Remove President Rousseff from Office,” Says President of Itaú Unibanco 08/24/2015
One of the most influential voices among Brazilian businessmen, banker Roberto Setubal set out in forceful defense in favor of the permanence of President Dilma Rousseff in office.
An impeachment on the grounds of corruption, “judging by what I have seen so far, is not justified,” said the president of Itaú Unibanco.
“Quite the contrary, what we have observed is that Rousseff has allowed a thorough investigation on the theme.”...

Well if the rule of law breaks down judicial executions are definitely not going restore it are they? Perhaps if the police stick to what they're supposed to be doing it would help matters. Otherwise they are just criminals in uniform. Which will assuredly confirm the complete breakdown. If there is a perception that there is no justice then the system fails, because the police need the trust and co-operation of the citizenry in order to carry out their duty effectively. You should remember the adages “the policeman's lot is not a happy one” and “the constable has blundered”.
But then if you're armed with a flame-thrower that will solve the problem won't it? So knock your self out. So you believe an individual like yourself should be allowed on the streets with a fire-arm. I suspect most ordinary people would consider you as just another criminal.

Who the hell is 'debating' on here ?? By your rules, which you don't even follow yourself, you try to deny people the right to express their opinions freely - unless they coincide with 'your' truth. Liberal sh*te.
    Piss-off Terence...
Ah, before I forget, when is the silicone being applied ?? will your bra be L, M or S ?

Aha, I see the Fuck-Up Fairy has visited us again!
Just because you have one doesn't mean you have to act like one.
I don't know what makes you so stupid, but it really works.

You always take the bait, don't you ? it's amusing to see you tie yourself in knots while trying to explain - unsuccessfully - that you aren't an insignificant little man.
Keep your “superior” sh*te coming, numbnuts ! and try posting your own opinion for a change.....oops, I forgot, you don't have one.....unless it's about those who see through all your crap.

So not only do you have comprehension problems, and don't a clue as to what ironic is. You still can't grasp fundamental logic, that no one has disprove another's assertion.
“It's amusing to see you tie yourself in knots while trying to explain - unsuccessfully...” To which you have not, nor can you prove, resulting in that you have simply revealed yourself as a liar.
If your IQ was any lower, you'd need watering.
This is no battle of wits between you and me. I never pick on an unarmed man. If you're gonna be a smartass, first you have to be smart. Otherwise you're just an ass.
    Shock me, say something intelligent.
Can you die of constipation? I am a little concerned how full of shit you are.

having a bit of trouble understanding your rambling and shitty English. Crawl back under you stone, you complexed idiot. You 'turdy' little fart ....

But I'm surprised....you didn't resort to quoting someone else's opinion this time...and showed us that when you express 'your' opinion, it is quite irrelevant. MP should create an 'entertainment' section.

“having a bit of trouble understanding your ...English.” Not surprised you have difficulty understanding anything; you couldn't tell your ass from a hole in the ground. Once more stupid, you made an assertion in post 45 “it's amusing to see you tie yourself in knots while trying to explain...”, you have been challenged to meet the burden of proof and prove your claim . Which you have not, simply because it's never happened. So the only obvious conclusion as to why not? is because it's a lie.
A very wise man once said, “it is better to let people think you are stupid than to open your mouth and proove you are stupid”
If stupidity was a disease, you would be dead right now.
I wish I had a lower I.Q., maybe then I could enjoy your company.
You are a man who always sticks by his convictions. You will remain a fool no matter how much you get ridiculed for it!
What's the difference between you and a sack of warm puke? Let me know if you come up with anything.
