A major earthquake just offshore rattled Chileans, killing at least five people and shaking the earth so strongly the tremor was felt in Argentina, Peru, Bolivia, Paraguay and even Brazil. Authorities worked into the early hours on Thursday assessing damage in several coastal towns that saw flooding from small tsunami waves set off by the quake. Read full article

I hope our Chilean contributors are safe and well.

Most of my friends are shaken but fine , just waiting for a couple more to make contact.

I am like 1,000km away from where it happened and it was really bad. Everything in my building moved and shacked. Nobody was hurt thankfully, but we all spent some time on the sidewalk until it was done.

Pretty intense moment. And certainly unpleasant.

Let´s hope our friends in Chile are safe.

Yep the lights were swinging in my house. Just glad so little damage and casualties from such a large quake.

    @1, 2 and 3
Thank you for your kind words.

Shaken but well. Luckily it was evening so the children were home. The aftershocks have been rolling in all night, some as big as 7M.

The sea came in some way to the lower parts of Coquimbo but not with damaging force. Some old adobe walls have collapsed in the center of La Serena. Last big quake in the “little” north was 1997 so we were due a sizable one.
    ...

This is the 3rd quake over 8M in Chile in 5 years! (the article omits last year’s 8.2 in Iquique) Any one +8M event is a catastrophic event in any country. Once again I am proud of the way we cope.

Nothing shouts ¡Viva Chile, mierda! like an earthquake on the eve of the 18th!!!
Las Fiestas Patrias have started a day early this year.
    ¡Viva Chile, mierda!

Good to hear. I have heard from almost everyone now and they are being amazing as usual. It is frightening at the time but a real determination to soldier on. Never beaten.

Due to visit the Elqui valley next week - so I hope my hotel is still standing! Glad to hear that there have been very few causalities.

Some of my relatives in Buenos Aires, in a tall building, shook too.

Are you also worried about your friends in Argentina? :))

Thankfully my wife's family in Melipilla was good to go. My sister-in-law lives on the 26th floor of an apt building in Santiago and she was scared shitless. She said she's moving to a house ASAP, :). I'm glad the damage was minimal for an 8+. Way to go Chile being able to handle what would be far worse situations in other countries.

The tectonic fault in South America has the serious effect of slowly press the tectonic fault in North America through the common mountain range to the Americas (Andes, Madre Dios and Rockies).

When the tectonic plate moves in South, increases pressure on the tectonic fault in the North.

When the pressure becomes unbearable for North failure ....San Andreas will destroy the western North America.

@8 I have friends in Argentina and Sao Paulo but none were concerned. It could hardly be compared to being close to the epicentre of an 8+ earthquake. (Are you feeling left out) Minor tremors are very common in Chile and although I have never experienced an earthquake of 8+ in Chile, I have experienced many that rattle the fillings in the teeth, the highest at 7.4. They rarely make a fuss about it.

Especially for pgerman, I hope all the Argentine contributors' cousins-twice-removed are recovering from a slight rattle and they were able to get an appointment with their regular therapists so they could deal with the trauma. Because the Chilean earthquake is all about them.
