As the green has said, there are likely to be other car manufacturers doing this.

Caterpillar and other large diesel engine makers were caught out about 5 - 7 years ago doing a similar thing.

Removing the algorithm that detects this abnormal system of running the engine (which the testing regime is) will reduce the power and efficiency of the engine of these 'new' high power, low consumption designs in road use.

The government tax departments won't like the knock on effect because diesel fuel is always overtaxed and the fall in sales numbers which will inevitably occur will reduce the take.

Don't you just love the hypocrisy of the present 'Californios' (the correct name of the original inhabitants) who have the highest drug use and consequent deaths in the US but want “really clean” vehicles for their health?

    Stupid buggers.

PS 40 times almost nothing is still nothing.

Love how Chris starts showing us how much he knows about VW's deception (it will end up costing to the tax department etc.) and then skids sideways, blames “stupid Californios” for an unrelated matter, and ends up excusing the automaker--hey, what's the fuss after all?
Come on, Chris. This example simply shows us what corporations are: soulless entities that couldn't care less how they make a buck.

it's clear you do not understand the EPA or what this means to on-going diesel technology.

BTW, it seems 'Herr' Merkel was aware of the software 'fix' as well.
