An Argentine flagged yacht “La Sanmartiniana” belonging to a political group which responds to Argentine president Cristina Fernandez son, Maximo Kirchner, was detected abandoned in the high seas by the Falklands Islands Fisheries Protection Vessel, FPV Protegat and is being towed to Port Stanley, reports a release from the Falklands government. Do the Falklands have a Sea Cadet unit? They could give it to them?
I can see the headlines in the Argie press, Pirates board the La Sanmartiniana on the high seas crew taken off by unknown fishing vessel Pirates understood to be operating form Port Stanley Falkland Islands. PMSL, nothing floats in Argentina ( for long ) anyway.

Something a bit odd about this - the Argentines say it was abandoned because 'bail pump' (presumably a bilge pump) wasn't working yet here it is three weeks later still afloat!. Not much of an emergency then!
Oct 09th, 2015 - 10:26 am - Link - Report abuse 0Nor it seems, did the crew take to the life rafts as there just happened to be a 'fishing boat' nearby.
Equally strange is that the 'fishermen' who rescued the crew didn't attempt to salvage a $90,000 yacht.
Looks to me like the crew came up with a nice excuse to not go through with their idiotic plan
Well, I´d personally chop it to pieces, then I´d send the remains in a cute box to Mr Maximo with an note that reads as follows: Please don´t park your trash in our islands. Love, FI, but I tend to be a little bit violent some times.
Oct 09th, 2015 - 10:54 am - Link - Report abuse 0I am not aware of what LOS may rule in cases like this. They can probable call the owner and request them to tow it away (after paying a bill for the use of the Port), if no notice is received then they should take ownership and sell it / donate it to the local school. That sounds cool also.
Oh, and I would certainly let a trained search Dog to spend one or two minutes inside, just in case the campora kids forgot something ... if you know what I mean.
It's a nice looking ketch and dirt cheap at 90k. Whomever found it abandoned and towed it owns it.....admiralty law.

Oct 09th, 2015 - 12:46 pm - Link - Report abuse 0@16. Here's the way it is. The boat was abandoned. That's already been admitted. Two issues. The cost of the salvage. How far is it going to be towed? Should be good for at least US$50,000, maybe more. Then there's the offence of leaving a vessel adrift. Perhaps someone will decide to prosecute the crew and owner(s)!
Oct 09th, 2015 - 12:50 pm - Link - Report abuse 0#16 tobi you ignorant pig, do you understand what abandoned means? Admiralty law appeals here under salvage rights. The salvor who tows it in can charge the owners damn near anything they want to.
Oct 09th, 2015 - 01:08 pm - Link - Report abuse 0Good luck with your theft claim idiot.
16 - Go and look up the International Law of Open Sea Salvage you idiot!
Oct 09th, 2015 - 01:12 pm - Link - Report abuse 0I think you will find that under Int Law that vessel is now the property of the Captain and Crew of the vessel that salvaged it.
They will probably invite her owners to make them an offer to buy it back if they wish - at a fee that would cover the ship,s towage and time costs
and a bit of a profit for the crew.
Or she will be offered to anyone else who wants to bid - or if no bids, then all fuels and oils etc removed to ensure no maritime pollution - taken out to see and sunk. Any bits of equipment of value would be removed and sold off.
Get real Brasileiro!
I think this is hilarious. The Argentine navy has warships that sink on their own and the campora had a yacht that decided to float rather than sink like the navy boats. I would recommend taking it to Stanley and put it up on display still with the campora flags on it. Turn into a kids playground or something.
Oct 09th, 2015 - 01:35 pm - Link - Report abuse 0I think that they FIG should rename Falklands Freedom, paint it in a huge Falklands Flag, and get a capable crew to sail it around South America telling the truth about the Falklands, and as an added bonus to sail it up and down the coast of Argentina laughing at the impotent Argentines.
Oct 09th, 2015 - 01:57 pm - Link - Report abuse 0And then when they've had their fun they can either sell it to Singer or let the RN use it as target practice (using our nuclear power penguins of course)!
But the whole thing is just so funny. These Argentine muppets can't even sail a yacht between Argentina and the Falklands without getting cold feet and abandoning it and running back home.
Just how do all these Argentine muppets think they're going to get their glorious military over to the islands?
Use it for target practice but sink it.

LEprecon that is a fantastic idea. Call if the Freedom Falklands and sail it around South America. You could probably sail it into Puerto Madero and out again and the Argentine navy could send out a destroyer to capture it. That is if they have any boats that are sea worthy.
Oct 09th, 2015 - 03:14 pm - Link - Report abuse 0Actually you could send it into BA to capture the city. They have no navy to oppose a 2 masted skiff.

You know, the really nice thing would be for the FIG authorities to send a very nice note to the Casa Rosada informing nicely to the current resident that her son's sail boat was found abandoned and that she's very welcome to personally come to Stanley and recover it. She of course would need to sign the normal documentation recognizing the FIG transfer...

Oct 10th, 2015 - 10:14 am - Link - Report abuse 0This going to get a little interesting. because no one from Argentina actually recognizes the islanders and run a mile from speaking to them. However the law in this situation make it very clear that they will have to talk to the Salvers.
Oct 10th, 2015 - 10:53 am - Link - Report abuse 0The right to be rewarded for salvage at sea under common law is based both on equitable principles and public policy and is not contractual in origin. Historically, salvage is a right in law, when a person, acting as a volunteer (that is, without any pre-existing contractual or other legal duty so to act) preserves or contributes so to preserving at sea any vessel, cargo, freight, or other recognized subject of salvage from danger. This is the typical case of salvage and is distinct from Prize law, which is the rescuing of property from the enemy at a time of war, for which a reward is made by the Court of Admiralty sitting as a Prize Court.
The law seeks to do what is fair to both the property owners and the salvors. The right to salvage may not necessarily arise out of an actual contract but is a legal liability arising out of the fact that property has been recovered. The property owner who had benefit of the salvor's efforts must make remuneration, regardless of whether he had formed a contract or not. The assumption here is that when faced with the loss of his vessel and cargo, a reasonable prudent owner would have accepted salvage terms offered, even if time did not permit such negotiations.
And seeing as the owner is that daft idiots son who has run Argentina into the ground, this could and should be a major embarrassment to Argentina,
The idiot Maximo is denying that it is the same vessel, which apparently wasn't abandoned (despite being reported as being abandoned by the actual crew of the ship) and that this is all a British 'conspiracy'.
Oct 10th, 2015 - 11:47 am - Link - Report abuse 0No doubt he's got a lackey running around trying to buy an identical yacht to 'prove' it.
I'm see the 'usual' suspects aren on here desperately trying to deflect attention away from this huge embarrassment for Argentina, but as usual it doesn't work.
I haven't laughed this much since the Libertad was impounded in Ghana, and then the government threw a 'victory' parade to ensure that the whole world knew just how pathetic, impotent they are, and the fact that they are a bunch of deadbeats who won't pay their debts.
Living where I do I've been around boats all my life and I've seen yachts come in out of Atlantic storms with their rigging, mast, sails all torn away. I've seen yachts with 20 degree lists and with holes in the hull patched with sails but still got into harbour. It's no co-incidence that there is a RNLI lifeboat based at Valentia Island.
Oct 10th, 2015 - 12:47 pm - Link - Report abuse 0Looking at the pics of this tied up in the FI it looks to me to be in pretty good nick. It's on an even keel, slightly down at the head but only very slightly, the masts and all the rigging seems to be intact and the sails are reefed. Although it does look like they were trying to run a spinnaker or a foresail which wouldn't help them a lot in a serious blow. I find it difficult to believe that it only had one bilge pump and the fact that it's on an even keel suggests to me that she wasn't taking on much water, if any.
I suspect that they got into a bit of a swell and panicked. perhaps they didn't have any experienced seamen with them - who knows. Whatever, they seem to have made themselves look very foolish.
Apparently La Nacion is trying to pretend that they weren't heading to the FI at all and were just calling in at Argentine ports.
OH, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, BAhahahahahahhahaah!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Oct 10th, 2015 - 12:54 pm - Link - Report abuse 0Just too funny for words, BAhahahahahahahahah!!!!!!!!!!!!
Where to begin, ohhhhh just where to begin, BAhahahahahahahahah!!!!!!!!!!!!
Perhaps it’s got 'Stiuso' on board, BAhahahahahahahahah!!!!!!!!!!!!
Or is this a case of Argentine people traffickers who forgot to put the refugees on the boat.
An attempt to “suicide” the boat, it knew too much perhaps.
Either way, Maximo don’t got no boat no more. Conspiracy theory explanation required quick.
Nice present for the Islanders though, I’m sure they will find a good use for it.
Unless of course the Vulture Funds get an order to impound it.

Common sense really but these Campora guys do not seem to have any. The boat looks in remarkably good shape having been towed for quite a distance so the question of whether the pumps work or not is irrelevant as it reached its destination, albeit not under the command of the Argies.

Oct 11th, 2015 - 01:35 pm - Link - Report abuse 0A ketch this size - what is it 50 - 60 footer would have at least and I say again at least 4 bilge pumps, two would be high level at around 16 -20 thousand litres per hour and two lower level at around 3 - 5 thousand litres per hour each of which should be individually connected to separate 32v batteries and would quite possibly have internal ballast pumps to maintain an even keel in case of major leaks but the fact is that the pics of her in the FI show her on an even keel just slightly down at the head. As she had been abandoned three weeks ago and was still afloat demonstrates quite clearly that the bilge pumps or at least most of them were working well (they would switch on automatically when the water in the bilges reached a certain depth). Also the pics of her in the FI seem to indicate that they had tried to rig some sort of foresail though god only knows why because that wouldn't help them in a gale or heavy swell. Any experienced sailor would take in all her sails, keep her head into the wind as much as possible and use her motor to keep forward momentum and head into the swell at about 45 - 60 degrees.
Now if they said that their engine had failed in heavy weather I would agree that it would be opportune to abandon ship if possible but I stick to my previous post, I think they were far too inexperienced for ocean sailing and they panicked when a swell started running but I am still amazed that the fishing boat didn't try to salvage her.
Argentina is an object of ridicule in Latin America because of its pathetic resort to gesture politics, carrying out some stunt or other that aims to have one effect but always results in the opposite effect.
Oct 11th, 2015 - 03:05 pm - Link - Report abuse 0The greatest example is, of course, the cowardly invasion of the Falklands which ended in a humiliating surrender and which has guaranteed the islands will remain British for generations to come.

Oct 11th, 2015 - 03:31 pm - Link - Report abuse 0Speculation...you don't know the details, most bilge pumps don't fail, it's the electrical system that controls them that does....
Also usually a bilge pump fail is not noticed until there is a noticeable amount of water lying that has not been pumped out...
The same system that controls one may control more than one....
Pumps designed to move thousands of litres per hour are not working...will the hand pump do.....
A boat full of youths hundreds of miles from the shore in a stormy Atlantic.....
Make a decision Captain....carry on or take the fishing boat....
If they stayed and the Captain knowingly endangered all of the passengers....
Manslaughter....
Are there any sensible people on this forum....at all....
Should we follow Old Man Voice's suggestion.....Get the saucepans out lads...

Oct 11th, 2015 - 04:01 pm - Link - Report abuse 0Ha Ha Ha.
You may call it speculation but it's speculation based on experience.
Of course electrical systems sometimes fail but that's why they are independent for each bilge pump and why they are insulated against influx of seawater. Any experienced seaman would be immediately aware that a bilge pump had failed by the 'feel' of the boat and by the big red light that would come on on his control board.
I repeat it's clear to see from the pictures of the ketch in the FI that the bilge pumps have worked admirably after she was precipitously abandoned by an inexperienced crew three weeks ago - how do you suppose she remained afloat all that time??.
No sensible skipper would ever get into a situation where he had a mob of hysterical passengers and no experienced crew, certainly not in the South Atlantic which I seem to recall is quite famous for stormy weather.
Quite clearly you are not one of the sensible people on this forum or you wouldn't keep on blathering about something which you clearly no nothing about.

Oct 11th, 2015 - 04:08 pm - Link - Report abuse 0Another of your juvenile suppositions! As a true Brit I support England, Wales, Scotland and, to a lesser degree, the combined Irish team.
It is disappointing to see that England, the host nation, did not progress to the quarter finals but I can still cheer for the other home nations. Indeed, I am also supporting the Pumas as their play is very entertaining.
I don't know where you are located, indeed I don't really care, but England is the host nation and a good job of organisation is clearly present. And, of course, we are at home.

“Pumps designed to move thousands of litres per hour are not working...will the hand pump do.....”
Obviously will, as the boat got all the way to the Falklands still afloat with no one pumping at all.
I agree they were wise to abandon ship when they had the chance, they were very stupid to take to sea in the first place, when they clearly had no idea what they were doing.

All based on a picture of a boat AFTER it has been docked....

A lot of variables ....yet you know it all without any details....
Living where you do, do you know a lot about bombs too....

Oct 11th, 2015 - 05:22 pm - Link - Report abuse 0Reality Check Here:
“Did they pump out the water after towing it in”:
No if it had been full of water it would have sunk, try towing a half full boat and it also sinks.
“are the pumps Engine run or battery, is the charging system working....”:
Whatever the system layout, it was obviously working as THE BOAT DIDN’T SINK, IT STAYED AFLOAT.
Nothing “variable” about it.

Dear deluded friend, you also need to have the courage (no chance) to admit that racism is endemic throughout your land. Any black foreigner who visits Argentina comes away with shameful stories of how they have been treated. That is one reason why the peoples of Brazil and Uruguay feel such contempt for Argentina, a country that is trapped in Thirties Fascism.

Oct 12th, 2015 - 02:07 pm - Link - Report abuse 0Of course there are those in Scotland and wales and N Ireland who would like to be independent of England(well in the case of N Ireland to join the Irish republic).
But unless they become the majority in those nations - it will not happen - simple as that.
Even if it did - both Scotland and Wales and even Ireland - would still be part of the British Isles you idiot! - Look at a map.
And both Scotland and Wales would be aiming to keep the Queen/King as their head of State, and probably the same currency(in which case their overall economy finances would still be controlled by London).
There is a very small call for Independence from Wales - count the Plaid Cymru MPs and last year,s referendum in Scotland fell quite a bit short and so is pretty well off the agenda for another 10-15yrs at least.
In May the people of Scotland did NOT vote Independence wise - they voted for their elected representatives in the overall British Parliament . Independence was not an electoral issue for the UK general election - understand?
By the way - we are aware there is also a small % of the Tierra del Fuego population who want to be Independent from that shambles north side 0f the Straits of Magellan - and I do not mean Chile!

I am well aware of the problems of our wonderful NHS which, sadly, is subject to so much abuse by many of our citizens that, at times, it is unable to cope. Oct 13th, 2015 - 09:59 am - Link - Report abuse 0We are all filled with pride that persons living in a poor, backward, Third World country spend so much time obsessing about the United Kingdom. But may we respectfully suggest that these obsessives give attention to the horrendous problems facing their own land, including the children who are starving to death. Have you heard about them or don't you care? And dying children are not the only shameful issues facing Argentina.
Read this in the Washington Post: “All is not well in Argentina. The economy is stagnant, the fiscal deficit unsustainable and growing, foreign and domestic investment pathetic, inflation running at 30 percent, drug-related violence rising and the country remains an outcast in the international financial community.”
Kirchner has been a disaster for Argentina. That is why she has to keep shrieking and screaming about the Falklands.
So can these sad people who are fixated on our fantastic United Kingdom let us all know what they are doing about the Argentine cess pit in which they wallow. But, having said that, you little people do make us feel proud when you write about our Great Britain. Make us smile.

Oct 15th, 2015 - 05:08 pm - Link - Report abuse 0I lived in Glasgow for nearly a year and no one had a problem with my English accent.
But I tell you what. Why don't you go there waving your Argentine flag and demanding the Falklands?
The Scots remember Mt Tumbledown. The remember the Falklands War. They remember that Argentina started it by invading a peaceful territory and holding its people hostage.
And the thing about the Scots is that they don't like bullies, they never forget, and they certainly won't forgive until Argentina learns some humility and common human decency and apologies to the people of the Falklands.
I've been in pubs in Glasgow when England were playing Argentina in football. And it is the ONLY time I've ever seen a pub full of Scots cheering on the English team.
The Scottish and English have a long and complicated history and a sometimes rocky relationship, which is built on mutual respect.
The Scots have no respect for Argentina at all.
And if you want to know what Scots think of cowards who do sneak attacks, just remember what they did in Glasgow to the cowardly terrorists.
