The defense of the Falklands must take centre stage in Anglo-Chinese relations

Full article 53 comments

By Alex Calvo (*) - Chinese Leader Xi Jinping’s state visit to the United Kingdom has been met with grand-sounding headlines, including references to a “golden era”. Public statements by both governments have focused on growing economic links, while some voices referred to human rights and US commentators expressed their concern at London’s closeness to Beijing at a time of increased tensions in the Indo-Pacific, above all the South China Sea. As for Chinese support for Argentina fake claim to the Falklands, who cares? The Islanders and the UK Government will decide their destiny, no-one else.

The British claim on the Malvinas is so laughable. I'm surprised England can claim anything these days as a second-rate world power. They will ultimately have to call on the USA for help as they always have. Hopefully, as the USA is broke, they will not waste their time and money even thinking about helping the “Queens subjects” in the Malvinas.

@5. We, the people, have this wonderful plan. When we finally get out of the EU, we have terrific ideas. We can start by cutting off benefits for scroungers. Like children living in their home countries. Next might be benefits for dependents. No job? Leave because there won't be any money. Then the others without jobs. Found in the country beyond a specified date and it's deportation. I reckon by this time that no EU migrants will want to be here. Then we can turn to the non-EU migrants. We can use the Police National Computer to find a lot. No job, on benefits? Custody until deported. The result? Lots of housing, lots of available benefits, lots of jobs. Human Rights Act? We'll repeal that. Then the most the ECtHR could do would be to suggest an opinion. And British courts can be directed to put British law first.

And we shouldn't forget that there's no point in worrying about education, healthcare or housing if someone's occupied or destroyed your country. It's about priorities.
    @6. Agreed.
    @7. Also agreed.

How about an extra £550 million to spend every day? What does the EU do for the British people that Britain couldn't do for itself? However did we manage before the EU? We shouldn't forget that when the EU “gives” us money, it's our money!

Perhaps we'll have an Irish-type solution for scotland. Divide it north to south. The ones that want independence can have one part and the ones that want to stick with the UK get the other part.

Goldman Sachs??? HAHAHAHA. The people famous for honest, angl0-saxon values like these:

    http://www.fool.com/investing/general/2010/04/19/goldman-sachs-and-the-art-of-ripping-your-clients-.aspx

“”Traders and salesmen would boast about 'ripping the face off' their clients -- structuring and selling complicated deals that clients did not understand but that generated huge profits for the bank that was brokering the trade.”

So, if the future of the global economy is corrupt, criminal banking activities led by debauched, thieving, duplicitous, morally barren Anglos... Then yes, in fact by 2030 the UK may surpass China at that point! 7% growth guaranteed for the Anglo.

If however the future is honest production of goods, sane regulation of banking, full refrain from invading other countries to steal their resources, and good food and healthy teeth... then by 2030 the UK will be looking up at Poland no doubt.

And btw, Goldman Sachs can't predict what will happen in the 3rd quarter of 2016, and the fools here are placing their bets on 2030 (that's 58 quarters from now...)

hahaha, deluded morons. Anglos will be Anglos.

“which claims the Falklands ...and without renouncing the use of force”

I am afraid that the last sentence is not entirely accurate. The same (absurd) constitutional provision that sets the (absurd) claim over the FI states that “ ... The recovery of said territories and the full exercise of sovereignty, respectful of the way of life of their inhabitants and according to the principles of international law, are a permanent
and unrelinquished goal”. (Temporary provisions, first. http://www.biblioteca.jus.gov.ar/argentina-constitution.pdf)

Unless Mr Calvo considers that the use of force (to gain territories) is a principle of international law, I don´t see where it says that argentina does not renounce to the use of force. Not even our most retarded officials , not even TMBofBA has even named the use of force.

I am very disappointed, and if he failed in such simple concept, I wonder what else could be wrong in that article. Sad.

I am one of those who think that building close ties with China is a risk. I am all for business, but marriage is a different story. They will f*ck us up, period.

funny, we have heard for ages that the “evil Brits” would take patagonia away from us. Now we are gladly giving it to the Chinese. oh, the irony.

We have noticed in the past that the GoA’s interpretation of international law, or UN resolutions for that matter, can be very different from our own understanding of them.

In fact completely the fu*king opposite of what you think they say and/or mean.

Given the selective editing of resolution 2065, I would fully expect to hear:

“ ... The recovery of said territories and the full exercise of sovereignty, are a permanent and unrelinquished goal of international law, irrespective of the way of life of their inhabitants and according to the principle of any means necessary.”

As being what the constitution actually, really, was meant to be interpreted as saying, when you understand it properly!

The Chinese are willing to pay lip service to discredited politicians around the world such as Corruptina Fernandez de Kirchner but they have absolutely no interest in her farcical claim to the Falklands. Beijing knows it is becoming more and more embroiled in numerous territorial disputes over isolated islands in the South China Sea, especially the Spratly archipelago. At a time when the United States has demonstrated its military might by sailing into Spratly's waters, China has to tread very carefully in disputes over territory. The Falklands are the last thing it cares about. Corruptina's Falklands fantasy is heading deeper and deeper into the depths of the South Atlantic.

So 'gay' is now an insult?

Err, yeh, for some time now common parlance in the vernacular.

Used far more often nowadays as an insult than to refer to someone’s sexuality.

Unless of course you’re living on another planet, or in the rarefied atmosphere of PCdom, where street language, what the common people speak, doesn’t penetrate.

    I wouldn’t know about the 50s, wasn’t around.

But I can tell you that the meaning of words changes, like Dyke common use amongst LBGT people, the N word amongst black people, gay as an insult.

The Gay Gordons, a bagpipe tune, with no reference to homosexuality whatsoever, means their happy, that’s all.

For example. You can probably accurately assume, on average, the personal traits for some of the following names:
    Tyrone and LeBron.
    Ainsley and Nigel.
    Svetlana and Natasha.
    Chaim and Mosha.
    Fritz and Hans.
Bruno and Butch and TroyTempest and Diesel and Sebastian the pool boy.

“I stand by what I say”

Well, thanks for demonstrating exactly my point.

I stand by what I said, too.

And here is what the Urban Dictionary has to say,

    “Gay:
    1. jovial or happy, good-spirited

    2. a homosexual male or female

    3. often used to describe something stupid or unfortunate. originating from homophobia. quite preferable among many teenage males in order to buff up their ”masculinity“

    My Opinion:

Don't say that something is gay as an insult. I find this highly immature, mostly because it is often used when people can't think of a proper insult even when there is nothing homosexual about whatever they're insulting.”

    Nice try... LOL

I am only offended that you tried to use ”gay”
as a way to insult people.

Perhaps I should have just assumed it was #3) - using “gay” in the vernacular,
“...often used to describe something stupid or unfortunate. originating from homophobia... ”

    which you just confirmed @44
”I didnt say it as an insult, rather that it sounds like it (your name) belongs to a certain community. “

At first I thought you were too stupid to know what you were saying, and you were just using it as juvenile slang you, but it seems you know perfectly well, and you've embarrassed yourself.

Your use of ”gay“ to describe others, emulates exactly the other LATAM Trolls, Paul Cedron, Tobi-Nostrils, Stevie, and ”voice”, who use it as a derogatory term to insult people.
