Falkland Islanders also participated in Sunday's elections in Argentina by sending congratulation messages to president-elect Mauricio Macri while celebrating the fact that president Cristina Fernandez time comes to an end. Read full article
Macri is a business man so he will want to forge a good working relationship but he has bigger problems to deal with and he needs to keep the 40+% that voted for Scioli happy. I think at best the FI can expect at this time is that the spiteful campaigning will stop. The Argentines certainly don't have money to waste on a fantasy.
@2 Agreed. There is nothing super critical to resolve with the Falklands/Malvinas issue in the short term. As ElaineB says, he has bigger problems to deal with.
But if you think about it, even just reducing the frequent news and demands regarding the islands will be pleasantly received by many people worldwide, regardless of their opinion on the issue. It's just NOT the most important issue impacting their daily lives. Jobs, the economy (investment, trade and inflation), safety, etc., is what needs to be addressed first.
It's good to see that no-one here is being euphoric. Many have pointed out that Macri has a lot to do. He could start by getting rid of the First Temporary Provision of the Constitution and replacing it with a permanent section stating that argieland has no claim to certain South Atlantic Islands or, for that matter, any part of Antarctica already claimed by anyone else. Then he could get on with paying argieland's debts. Remembering to apologise to Judge Griesa and asking whether the judge would like Kick it Off in his court for punishment.
You will never get your wish since Antarctica is not a claim, but a territory that does not belong nor will it belong to your country. That is a certainty.
I do not think the President-elect can just make a sharp U-turn and drop the claim all together. It is too sensitive a question within Argentina. But , it would be step forward if he just scales down the anti-F.I.-activities performed by the previous government. For instance to abolish the government post curretly held by Mr. Filmus.
Hardly anyone outside La Cámpora gives a flying f about Las Malvinas. There won't be any rhetoric in that regard as long as Macri is president. If the islanders are smart they'll convince UK to pull some levers behind the scenes at the IMF because Argentina will need financial aid immediately. It's in anyone's interest that Macri finish his term and then another one.
Sorry, but I cannot square the facts of the matter.
1) many more people voted than usual and they voted for Macri it seems given that La Camping-it-up ran out of money trying to bribe the stinking poor.
2) who did The Dope of an Argy Pope say WHO people should vote for? He didn't, so any voter could claim they voted with their conscience. Or are you saying the sensible people didn't vote with their conscience?
3) does anybody with half-a-brain take any notice of The Dope of an Argy Pope, even Argentines. People with a brain vote for the candidate that they think is going to be best for them (and therefore the country). Or do you vote for who you are told to by the missus?
4) and the most compelling one: it seems the Argentine people don't want to be robbed any more and they have woken up to TMBOA and her scumbags.
Why on earth did you switch to the RCC, wasn't the UK book of fairy tales (the St. James bible) good enough for you?
@9. It's time for you to understand that the days of Faggot Annie are nearly over. Therefore, it's no longer appropriate to lie at every opportunity. If you were to look up the history (that's real history, not the ever-changing argie version), you would find that NO-ONE, with the possible exception of Chile, ever accepted argieland's CLAIM. Therefore, a claim it was and a claim it remains. Not interested in such idiocies as shipping pregnant women out there. Notable that, when Britain submitted an application to the International Court of Justice in 1955 for adjudication, argieland and Chile refused to take part. As with adjudication over the Falkland Islands, this proves that argieland doesn't have a valid claim. Not least because Britain claimed the territory first. About 35 years before.
In my opinion, I understand that Argentina has much more important objectives to waste the time on those two islands in the en. If the isd pf the world. If islanders feel British, are welcome and do business with them that we have plenty of territory
Are you sure?! Argentina's largest newspaper claims Falklands voted in country's election
ARGENTINA's most popular newspaper has bizarrely claimed the Falkland Islands took part in the South American country's presidential election
Agree with Peter (#23). ...
(#24)... is a newspaper opinion (or editor's opinion)... no more than this one... I'm a runner ..not a politic... never believe in politics... only I regret not being able to run the next 42km marathon in the islands because it is too difficult to travel from here.
just make sure you don not screw it up before time with Macri.
Are you going to quit the cheap propaganda you are spreading on malvinas?
the malvinas is present in the Argentine constitution: Macri won't quit. http://www.parliament.am/library/sahmanadrutyunner/argentina.pdf
@26 marasilver
These authorities were ejected by violence and not allowed to remain in the territory. Most of them had been forced to leave after the 1832 attack. On the contrary, they were replaced during those years of usurpation, by a colonial administration and a population of British origin.
You seem happy with Ruda's glaring omissions and inaccuracy. Fine, see where that gets you at the ICJ.
Because according to the history from 1833 (present in B.A archives), it's bullshit.
Most of them had been forced to leave after the 1832 attack
What 1832 attack?
The only attack came from the USA in 1831 (notice the difference between USA and Great Britain)? And notice the difference between 1831 and 1832? Obviously Ruda doesn't, with elementary mistakes written in his piece.
Who were forced to leave? The UP authorities (who arrived in October 1832), or the civilian population?
2/- The so-called UP authorities consisting mostly of prisoners conscripted into the army arrived in October 1832. So they were only on the Islands for three months.
The British issued a protest upon hearing that the militia (made up mostly of convicted criminals)were being sent to the Islands. Ruda 'forgets' that.
It does not say on Ruda's post that 10 of these murdered Mestivier and raped his wife in front of his children and were tried in BA,most of them shot by firing squad. (In Buenos Aires-not in the Falklands).
On the contrary, they were replaced during those years of usurpation, by a colonial administration and a population of British origin.
So is Ruda saying that Antonio Rivero was British?
He chose to stay in 1833.
Is Ruda is saying the gaucho Antonina Roxa who ended up buying a ranch near Stanley originated from Britain?
She chose to stay in 1833.
You have confidence in Ruda when he seems to have a false notion of history, perhaps rather than research history properly, my educated guess is that Ruda spends more time getting gassed on his own farts.
