In his first press conference as Argentine president-elect, Mauricio Macri announced on Monday he would not have a Secretary of Economy but rather an economic cabinet with six members, and anticipated that the team that will be taking office with him, as well as those in the province of Buenos Aires, will include many officials which do not come from the political system. Disclaimer & comment rulesThis is the perfect time for Macri to get rid of the Peso and convert the economy to U$.
Nov 24th, 2015 - 01:26 pm - Link - Report abuse 0It would solve most of every economic problem he's going to have.
I hope he considers it.
I hope that when he sees the full extent of the terrible state of the economy he is completely transparent about it with the Argentine people. He should show just how much they have been lied to.
Nov 24th, 2015 - 02:00 pm - Link - Report abuse 0It will take years to sort out this mess. If I'm right ( as usual :) ) every entity that's supposed to have cash doesn't and they have cross loans to each other that are all worthless. This includes the provinces.
Nov 24th, 2015 - 02:07 pm - Link - Report abuse 0Also every company the gov't has control of has been looted with deals signed where the payments come due next year.
The Ks have looted the country, Macri will have to start all over again with stats, firing 10s of thousands of people from the gov'ts just for starters.
Its going to be ugly.
He could mask a lof of it by adopting the U$ as their currency at the same time. It will confuse people but in the end its the right thing to do. The only reason Ecuador has not been dragged into the BoliSocialism nightmare has been because they use it.
@3 Macri has not been shy of firing the noquis. I think he laid off about 2,500 when he was voted Major. But he has tempered this with stating he will not reduce welfare in the immediate future. If he did he could have a riot on his hands.
Nov 24th, 2015 - 02:37 pm - Link - Report abuse 0He has talked about putting businessmen into the state owned companies like Aerolineas which will cut off the funds flowing into La Campora and may even make some money in the long term.
I cannot see them adopting the dollar any time soon. Remember Macri has to appease the brainwashed significant minority of voters that still believe Kirchnerism is the answer. I have no doubt that CFK will revert to activist mode and they have all the La Campora youth movement revved up in the background.
Macri is going to have to be clever about the moves he makes but he does have the majority wanting change and he should capitalise on that.
If it were me I wouldn't care about the population uprising. They're going to do it anyway. I'd implement everything I had to all at once and let the dust settle.
Nov 24th, 2015 - 02:45 pm - Link - Report abuse 0Aerolineas will never be profitable. They should just disband it.
The whole problem with Argentina is that they have a large landmass filled mostly with lazy uneducated people. They've never invented anything. They demand EU benefits and work rules but produce like an African.
Tough love is needed.
Everyone in the civilized world is talking about an IMF bailout for them.
@5 Aerolineas has a monopoly and could at least break even (most airline don't even do that) but he needs to keep it for two reasons. 1) To stop the flow of money to La Campora and 2) An awful lot of Argentines believe owning it is right. Years of brainwashing has them believing it is better to own a loss-making firm than for it to be privately owned; seriously. So, I would suggest he doesn't make this an issue the Kirchners can exploit.
Nov 24th, 2015 - 02:59 pm - Link - Report abuse 0Yes, there is a cultural problem in Argentina regarding working and being responsible. But this has been cultivated by successive governments and won't change over night. That is the long game.
There is something to be said for profiting from the moment of having the majority onside and wanting change. I hope he does.
Yes, I suspect there will be outside help for Argentina now Macri is running the show.
Argentina can't afford an Airline. Just like they can't afford to own anything.
Nov 24th, 2015 - 03:14 pm - Link - Report abuse 0Get rid of it and give the routes to LAN.
He needs to let the USA DEA investigate the Kirchners and indict everyone below them with whatever crimes they committed during their reign.
He has to neutralize them immediately and send a message.
These people are not civilized Elaine, they're ruthless maniacs that need to be put down like a rabid dog.
@7 See now you have gone all weird again. I have many civilised friends in Argentina none are maniacs or ruthless and certainly should not be murdered. Your generalisations just make you look like you a waging a personal vendetta.
Nov 24th, 2015 - 03:57 pm - Link - Report abuse 0I realise you think the US is the only country in the world that can solve problems but the last thing in the world they should be doing is getting involved in the matter of law and order in Argentina. The country has to be the master of its own fate and clean it up.
A member state of NATO shot down a Russian fighter jet and I think that is slightly more pressing for the US government.
You need to take off the rose colored glasses. I am not at all generalizing when I talk about the Ks.
Nov 24th, 2015 - 04:07 pm - Link - Report abuse 0They're animals with no conscience.
The USA DEA is an elegant solution to rid Argentina of a terrible problem.
Watch how well it works in Venezuela when it call comes crashing down.
And Turkey can take care of itself.
Russians should know better than entering their airspace
Or maybe they know now
Blame idiot Obama for creating this mess. Liberals always create huge messes that Conservatives need to clean up.
It happens every 30yrs or so.
Errr... Like the last time you had a Conservative! W was one of the biggest fools this planet has ever seen. Primarily responsible for the whole mess in the Middle East. I wouldn't say he was evil, just a prize turnip ( in the words of our dear departed Mr Think/ Voice). And then we had Mutt Romney, he was somewhat short of stuff up top. And now what do we have - Trump, a prize moron, a beligerant racist bigot. The days of the US Empire are over. The US is the last country on the planet to sort anyone's problems out, it still has problems of its own in Spades!
Nov 24th, 2015 - 04:20 pm - Link - Report abuse 0@3 If we adopt the US Dollar as currency we are proving we are inferior. We must learn to manage our own currency or else we aren't human beings.
Nov 24th, 2015 - 04:23 pm - Link - Report abuse 0Macri isn't going to dollarize the economy anyway.
@9 Ahhhh, you were only referring to the K's. Hard to argue against them being ruthless and self-serving.
Nov 24th, 2015 - 04:35 pm - Link - Report abuse 0I don't wear and coloured glasses but I honestly do not think the US will be helping Argentina with anything other than a possible bail out. To do anything else will inflame the opposition. Their could be some soft assistance.
If Macri asked the USA DEA we would jump on it. Other stuff I'm not so sure. They've burned a lot of bridges and they have 200 yrs of not living up to agreements. I don't see that changing in the near term no matter who the Prez happens to be.
Nov 24th, 2015 - 05:01 pm - Link - Report abuse 011. Your history proves you can't manage a currency/economy. Argentina has more currencies and economic crashes than any other country in the history of the world. If you think that makes you sub-human that's your own nuttness.
I can only pass on the things I heard from Argentines in the run up to the election. Most people were heartily sick of the corruption around the K's and CFK's bombastic, arrogant style. The inflation and insecurity were very real problems that did not seem to be addressed and it bothered people a lot. But even people wanting change were worried about the alternative of Macri selling off everything of any value to foreign companies because they associate this with the policies of the 90's.
Nov 24th, 2015 - 05:37 pm - Link - Report abuse 0Now, we all know it is not as simple as that but Macri has to handle the significant minority and not give the opposition ammunition. Times are going to get tough before they get better and blatantly acting as if the only solution it to let the US 'sort things out' would backfire. You have to know your audience, as it were.
Besides, I think the US has enough problems of their own to be bothered to go in to a whole lot of trouble in Argentina. They do have a vested interest in have a better relationship with Argentina.
I suspect that when the few reserves that the Banco Central has will turn out to be a lot of worthless IOUs from the government so they may have no real reserves at all.
Nov 24th, 2015 - 06:23 pm - Link - Report abuse 0Ohhhh, it's not all that bad Elaine in the USA. Besides, we have El Donald to keep us laughing through these tough times.

Nov 24th, 2015 - 06:27 pm - Link - Report abuse 0Yankeeboy has got out of his basement. He is jubilant in the belief the U.S. will rule again in Argentina.
Yankeeboy's delusions show the mind frame of the now decadent neo-colonialism rot that kept many developing countries--most of the Latin American ones--in the Dark Ages for too long.
Tough luck, YB and like-minded.
Too much water has gone under the bridge. Things may become worse, but they will not come back to where they were. Argentina may pause, but will not go back to being on its knees--not sir.
And Macri hasn't got a strong enough backing that would enable him to sink the country Menem-style.
Reeeeeeeek, you are going to continue to be disappointed in the failure of your aspirations for rotting roadkill.
Nov 24th, 2015 - 07:09 pm - Link - Report abuse 0Oh Yankee is accurate about events alright.
Nov 24th, 2015 - 07:20 pm - Link - Report abuse 0I still remember the time he predicted rioting and burning cars.
And thats exactly what happened.
Unfortunately he got the location a tiny bit wrong.
Turned out it was Baltimore not Buenos Aires.
Still laughing.
@16 Ah, I know it is not that bad….I spend a lot of time there. But I cannot imagine that Argentina is a high priority for the US and they certainly don't want to meddle in domestic affairs. They pretty much ignored a lot of provocation from the Kirchners and look what happened; the people of Argentina got rid of them all on their own.
Nov 24th, 2015 - 07:51 pm - Link - Report abuse 0Cap'n glad you can laugh about Trump, but stranger things have happened - wanut brain Raygun, and then W! The best thing about the latter were the lookalike Chip pictures. Who could have believed either of those?

Argentina is not going to dollarise.
Nov 24th, 2015 - 08:10 pm - Link - Report abuse 0Argentina is not going to shut down Aerolineas.
Argentina is not going to allow a foreign country in to investigate criminal activity.
To think otherwise is to be a delusional idiot.
Argentina is finally treading a new path that it has never done before. A peaceful handover from an economically illerate and incompetent government. Doing the above things people be the dumbest thing possibly and destroy faith on all sides of politics.
Yankeeboy's predictions haven't been that good. It is easy to make vague predictions and then retrospectively fit them to a situation.
Argentina is fully capable of retaining its current currency, reigning in inflation and eventually rebuilding foreign reserves.
Aerolineas can be reigned in and maybe it won't make a profit but could be made to be less unprofitable and cease being a siphon of funds for La Campora.
And Argentina might finally realise the best part of democratically alternating power when the lies start being exposed. CFK was only able to lie so often and for so long because there was no proof she was. In a normal democracy that proves impossible because the next person in the job gains by exposing them.
Countries can change. And the US is not the best country to emulate on all things.

Nov 24th, 2015 - 08:11 pm - Link - Report abuse 0Elaine, yours is wishful thinking from somebody who brags about having anecdotical knowledge about Argentina but is blinded by prejudice.
The Argentines did not get rid of the Kirchners. The result was less than three points difference.
While 12.9 million voted for Macri, 12.2 million still trusted Scioli. Not bad for a party 12 years in government.
Getting rid of is what happened in Canada last month when we elected Pierre Trudeau's son Justin on a landslide. Former PM Harper was really sent packing and Canada is back to where it always was: a generous, compassionate, peacekeeping, environmentally friendly country that can be an example to many--including in this board.
Likewise “one of the reasons why Argentines decided for a change has been precisely because they want a government that reports to them, and tells them the truth about the situation, and that we will have on 10 December”.
Nov 24th, 2015 - 08:15 pm - Link - Report abuse 0A dose of reality will be painful but hopefully enable Argentina to recover and face realty. CFK was like Galteiri, who told Argentina it was winning against the UK in 1982, right up to the surrender , hence the reality hit harder. Once Argentines know how CFK lied they will be angry but accept that they have to live with reality, not a myth.
@23 The majority of Argentines voted for Macri thus getting rid of the Kirchners. You will just have to accept it.
Nov 24th, 2015 - 08:18 pm - Link - Report abuse 0I do have a lot of first-hand knowledge of Argentina which is more then you can say.

Macri is a smart guy who's been around a long time. He knows how things work.
Let's see if the lazy corrupted scumbags allow him to do the right things.
My guess is they won't but I hope to be pleasantly surprised.
@13 Your history proves you can't manage a currency/economy. Argentina has more currencies and economic crashes than any other country in the history of the world. If you think that makes you sub-human that's your own nuttness.
Nov 24th, 2015 - 09:42 pm - Link - Report abuse 0Regardless of history, we should still learn to manage a currency. Or else we will be forever a joke like Zimbabwe. And I don't think anyone on Earth values Zimbabweans the same as Americans... not in practice at least. Even the most politically correct lefty regards Zimbabwe as inferior to the USA. It is human nature to judge nations which are not civilized as inferior as countries that are. And one of the measures of civilization is to have a currency.

Is that so?
Trudeau got less than 40% of the popular vote; but thanks to the first-pass-the-post system for MP's, got 54% of the seats.
There was less than 7.5% separating your golden boy Trudeau and the man you dislike so much, Harper. How is such a spread considered a landslide?
Over 60% of Canadian voters did not vote for Trudeau.
You are incorporating a very bias yardstick.
Yankeeboy,
Nov 24th, 2015 - 11:03 pm - Link - Report abuse 0You usually have a lot of correct information, but your predictions fall very far from usually right.
I just remember about a year ago when you predicted that Citi group would close operations in Argentina. My account is still there and in good health.
Now you insist for the nth time on you crazy idea about Arg. adopting the USD. I'll leave that up to you to ponder why the adoption of a stronger foreign currency does not work for not so developed countries.
How about Greece, huh? I don't think they did too well with the Euro. What about our very own One to One? Guess I don't need to remind you about that one. You're pretty good at researching, that's for sure. I'd suggest you dig into some of those pertinent books that college sophomores have to read if they ever wish to get a major in economics. The Euro could have and should have worked if they didn't live like they were Germans or French but MAKE NOTHING.
That is only one side of the problem which I happen to have learnt from direct experience during the 90's.
The biggest factor you are overlooking here is that for a mostly commodity based economy like ours, a local currency acts as a counterbalance allowing to absorb the swings of the global market.
Certainly mismanaged in Arg. for political reasons. Not lack of talent.
As for the rest of your post, including previous posts as well, you sound nothing short of a full fledged bigot who has developed very notable traces of Kirchnerite mindset.

Enrique, as to your comment @23,
Yankeeboy's delusions show the mind frame of the now decadent neo-colonialism rot that kept many developing countries--most of the Latin American ones--in the Dark Ages for too long.
Argentina's problems are of their own making - poor decisions, arrogance and incompetency.
You will be the first to admit that Argentina was once great, had everything going for it, blessed with vast resources and commodities - 5th largest economy in the world.
In the 1940's, they sat out the war, hedged their bets with both sides, struck out on their own, Nationalised industries, carved out their own destiny... surely they were the enlightened ones, living in a golden age of promise, masters of their own fate?!
Argentina has been in steady decline ever since, and led themselves into your so-called Dark Ages.
The K's have only made things darker by emptying the bank, not paying the mortgage, and borrowing again, from the Chinese.
Along comes Macri, giving the people hope with a new direction, and settling of accounts - and you don't want that. Why?
It is not up to you, and the people committed to living and working, and raising their families in Argentina, DO want that new chance, and showed it in the last election.
Perhaps you should respect their choice and support Macri as he tries to make Argentina recover.
33. My prejudices, as with everyone's are learned. I liked Argentina a lot and still have a few friends there but even some of them are lazy and more arrogant than I can tolerate sometimes.

Psst this one is a bit past due.
Maybe you lazy entitled people should think of saving...gasp... yes savings when commodities are high so you can ride out the enevitable downturns like Chile.
This is just common sense and good gov't.
None of which is in high supply in Argentina.
You spend too much and get poorer and dumber every year.

My people? Fact is you have by your statements given full support to a government that countenances the enslavement of Guarani speakers in Corrientes, forced to work on the yerbales for no pay by K oligarchs. Not to mention the elimination of the tribes of Chaco and Formosa, of which the Qom are but one, via disease and denial of the most basic medical care. Who was in charge of Corrientes? Why Coqui and his brother, along with the K oligarchs there who continue to operate, destroying the forest and chopping down endless truckloads of quebracho and other woods in protected areas, all with the connivance of your beloved Narco-Kleptocracy.
When you support people like that, you merely highlight the fact that you are just another Fascist Peronist, an Anti-Semite who smirks and questions that Nisman was murdered, when even the Chief Ladrona admitted he was, and who would know better? As the Paraguayans would put it, (in Guarani of course,) you are nothing more than a stinking pigskin.

So their economy has been reduced in the last two cycles after the tech-bubble of 2000 to depend on real-estate boom, speculation and bust. First on in 2000s, now another which will quickly implode. In the meantime no new real industries have arisen to add more diversity to growth. It's not a good situation.

You're a sad guy Toby.
If you weren't such a dick I would feel sorry for you.
Its sad that when you started posting many years ago you were kind of fun to chat with but now you're just pathetic. You post stuff not even you could believe. It's just lies based on an inferiority complex.
Someday you should come to the USA. Its not like anything you've ever seen. My Arg friends come here and are flabbergasted. Its fun to take them to see NYC. Their jaws drop. My one friend said they have no idea meaning Rgs have no idea how amazing it is.

Why are you trying to pretend? You couldn't be more obvious.

You may try to impress the gallery by showing off numbers for your country--how much of it is your merit besides being so smart to be born there?
However, when you resort to the old argument of calling people in certain countries lazy you invalidate yout own arguments.
According to your ignorant, pathetic rants, no matter what, Argentine, Greece and the rest of the countries in your lazy category will never be OK by your standards-not even with your Macri hero at the helm.
You show serious lack of self esteem when you need to brag about its wealth and power.
Your country, by the way, with all its unresolved social problems, is by better than what you show to be--are a failed product.
