Malcorra does not discard a trade agreement with US; Obama could visit Argentina next year

Full article 43 comments

Argentina's foreign minister-designate Susana Malcorra said the FTAA (Free Trade Area Of the Americas) is not a bad word suggesting the country could eventually sign a free trade deal with the United States in the future. She also referred to the Falklands/Malvinas dispute, “an urgent claim” but focusing on things in common and “not differences”. Read full article

“It is an urgent claim” because the archipelago is part of the “territorial integrity” of Argentina.

That all you people need to hear, no talks until they either take it to the ICJ or withdraw their claim,

they will now try to conn you all, and intimidate you,
apparently the worlds leaders will pay homage to the great Argentine , the usa president may visit, the German and French leaders, the Spanish and the European leaders, African leaders will also pay homage and visit, china and Russia perhaps,

then humiliate Britain into paying homage,

A dream maybe , seems these argies have not changed one little tiny bit.

    just my humble opinion.

Perhaps Macri could take an hour or so out of his busy schedule to read up on the history of the Falkland Islands. Then he could take another hour to read up on relevant international law. Finally, he could take some time to consider the balance of forces and think that Galtiera thought that the UK would just give in. Perhaps, if he reads the right stuff, he'll realise that argieland's “urgent claim” has been over since 14 June 1982. It is now neither “urgent” nor a “claim”. It is, at best, a whinge. Will he be amongst the first of modern argies to grow up? Then he could require Malcorra to read all the same stuff. As a thought, he should sack Castro for suggesting that Corbyn is “one of us”. Corbyn is, of course, a traitor to Britain. He wouldn't defend our country. He wouldn't allow British forces to operate abroad. He believes in handing the Falklands over to argieland despite the wishes of the Islanders. Isn't he a true colonialist, imperialist? How else would he think he has the right to hand over an allied country to another state?

Could we even begin to hope that Macri has enough intelligence to recognise reality and demand that his government does the same? One day, the UK will hand the Falkland Islands over to someone else. To the Falkland Islanders. Never to argieland.

With regard to rottingroadkill's claim on the Falklands:

The whole narrative reminds me of a child who stole a very small but treasured item and held it for only a very brief time before it was wrested away from him by the rightful owner and then the child thief spends the entire rest of his life trying to justify his original act of thievery and in lament of his loss of something that was never rightfully his in the first place.

    And in just one sentence.

It's been over 180 years. They lost a war they started. It isn't an urgent matter at all, it's a dead in the water matter.

But if they want to spend what little money they have flogging this dead horse instead of sorting out their own country, then so be it.

”She (Malcorra) also referred to the Falklands/Malvinas dispute, “an urgent claim” but focusing on things in common and “not differences”.

Off to a bad start. If she keeps plugging away at this insane claim, Argentina will carry on being regarded as a nut case by the 1st world.

As Conqueror says @7, it would be a bloody good idea if both she and Macri, took some time off to become familiar with real facts about the Falklands - instead of taking her cue from idiots like A.Castro and CFK .

Jack, as an Argie politician, she has to say that about the Falklands. She must have been talented diplomatically to hold the UN position she had. My guess is that its just essential posturing. If she is any sort of sensible person she will understand that threats and intimidation must be deplored and cease. Argentina hasnt tried being nice generous and reasonable for many years. Lets hope she recognises that cooperation and genuine friendship is the best method of fulfilling Argentinas desires although it may take many years and possibly never succeed. Latinos are very concerned with 'face', and she will pursue a line that keeps that intact.

So let's look at the list:
Ministry of Education Esteban Bullrich / Ministry of Education Esteban Bullrich: are these related?

Ministry of Transportation Guillermo Dietrich: is he part of the car sales outfit in BsAs? At least he would know about cars!

Ministry of Science and Technology Lino Barañao: Macri will be able to wipe the floor with him!

Belgrano Plan Responsible José Cano: bit of a waste of money and similar to the film “Raising the Titanic” to which the producer, Sir Lew Grade, claimed 'it would have been cheaper to have sunk the original'.

Poor start from the apparently malcontent Malcorra but she may have been lying to keep the morons on the streets sucking their dummies.

OK, Malcorra is a politician and a career diplomat, and has to throw some bs around every now and again, to justify her existence...however, Macri has not even been sworn in and she is already blowing her stupid mouth off ....given the bad results of this policy over the last 8 years, one would think she'd give it a rest and then - if she is still stupid enough to believe what she's saying - go about it more 'diplomatically'...

@17 Expect better diplomacy and nothing more than that. Even if Macri wanted to he cannot drop our claim. He would have to change the constitution, and he has no hope of doing that. And even if he could, the people would burn him at the stake if he wanted to drop our claim.

I think she is playing to the home crowd, (“urgent claim...”), whilst internationally-speaking, she is quietly putting it on the 'back-burner', (“... things in common and “not differences”.”).
An experienced diplomat after all, something for everyone to take home, perhaps?

Who knows what she really thinks?

I think that, irrespective of who is president in Argentina or the other American countries, the FTAA is not going to happen any time soon.

Agreed, but with the amount of FTAs being signed by the Pacific Alliance countries it probably isn't important.

Add the TPP which includes 5 countries in the Americas (including the 1st, 3rd, 4th and potentially if Colombia signs 5th largest economies) and the FTAA is quickly being overtaken by others.

Well Macri is riding the streets and will finish his term on December 10th 2019, just as said in 2012 that EX-PRESIDENT Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner would finish her term today.

It is the way of things. I don't particularly like democracy, but the term must be respected, just as I said CFK term must be respected even though everyone here was calling for a COUP.

I bet no one here now is calling for a COUP.

I am the only democrat here, even though I don't believe in democracy.

You are confusing forms of governance with economic systems.

China is not a democracy and capitalistic. Sweden is democratic but not capitalistic.

I think democracy is a scam, a better system is direct virtual vote, where there is direct democracy at the level of small towns up to 2,000 people, and those elect a representative that casts votes on legislation posted online.

    @29 Pooping glass
I see 'democracy ' as more than just a form of government...how can you separate them ? in a true democracy, anyone who choses to can be an enterpreneur, which is the basis of capitalism....which in turn is an economic system.
As to Sweden and the other Scandinavian countries, they are socialist democracies that entertain capitalism.....the State does not get involved in production or other economic activities....it simply collects taxes for redistribution where needed, and monitors the free enterpreneurship to ensure nothing gets out of hand......and ONLY countries like those in Scandinavia, that are not governed by imbeciles from the radical left, can afford to keep such a system going.....but the day that the spongers outnumber the contributors, the system starts to fail.
As to the voting system adopted, direct or indirect, in large cities and small towns, this is a political option which 'can' be changed, but is not necessarily a result of capitalism. What other system of government, or what other economic system allows personal freedom to make your own choices, and rewards hard work appropriately, obviously respecting certain reasonable limits ???

“OUR CONSTITUTION SAYS IT IS OUR, SIMPLE”

And the Falkland Islands constitution says it is theirs.

And the current inhabitants of the Falkland Islands are?

“ WE DONT WANT TO COOPERATE WITH THE SQUATTERS”

OK, expel your European squatters from Argentina and return the country to the indigenous population who were evicted by the Spanish.

“WE NEED TO RESOLVE AN ISSUE”

Yes, you're broke and hopefully Macri will repair your economy which is in shit street.

“WHO TNHE HELL TLD YOU THE CLAIMING IS OVER SINCE 1982”

You can claim as much as you like , your sovereignty claim is invalid.

“AND YOU ARE WELCOME TO OUR ARCHIVES IN BIUENOS AIRES ”

Yes, we've read them, and they prove what you say is inaccurate, but it's clear that Argentina never reads it's own archives. Try reading what Pinedo wrote, it does not back your claim.

Try finding out about Mestivier's mutineers who were sentenced to death by firing squad, in Buenos Aires, by the Buenos Aires Government, (Captain Onslow did not order their deaths).

Try finding out about the South American settlers who were allowed to stay on the islands by the British and at the time of 1833, perhaps only one of the settlers was English out of 22.

Try explaining why most of Pinedo's sailors were British (NOT South American), so most of the Buenos Aries Government forces sent away in 1833 WERE BRITISH, many in fact were E.N.G.L.I.S.H,.DUMBASS.

“ CHECK YOUR CUTS FROM THE LAST YEAR ON EDUCATION POLICE, ELDERS BENEFITS, FIRE DEPT. RENT GENERATION OUT OF THE MARKET, WORRY BOUT THAT INSTEAD OF US AND THE ISLAND, DUDE”

    Hello, are you out there?

Education in the Falkland Islands, paid for by the FALKLAND ISLANDS GOVERNMENT, NOT the British taxpayer.

Old age accommodation at the KEHM, is paid for by the FALKLAND ISLANDS GOVERNMENT, NOT the British Taxpayer.

The Falkland Islands Fire department-funded by the FALKLAND ISLANDS GOVERNMENT, NOT the British Taxpayer.
