    The only REAL “bone of contention” between our two nations is the status of the Falkland Islands - which are undoubtedly British. Relations between our two nations can only enter a “new era”when Argentina acknowledges its claim to sovereignty of the archipelago to be absolutely “null and void” UNLESS it takes its claim to the International Court of Justice and the matter is resolved in its favour.

    The ambassador in London recalled that back in 1997, Macri was interviewed on the issue and his reply surprised everybody. He minimized the claim and stated, “I never quite understood the sovereignty claims of such as big country as ours. We don't have a space problem such as Israel, for example”.

    That mythical Malvinas stuff is wearing a bit thin on the imagination: https://www.academia.edu/17799157/Falklands_-_Some_Relevant_International_Law

    Perhaps Macri knows the truth and is preparing the way to drop the claim?

    Or just punt it into the long grass and leave it there maybe drag it out once a year to appease the malvistas but otherwise ignore it?
    Don't think he will be able to drop it easily but maybe improve relations with the uk with a nudge nudge say no more approach.

    Oh, Macri has no alternative but to assuage the Malvanistas or CFK will use it as a weapon to beat him with.

    Where the two countries can work together is trade, protecting fisheries, transport….. Macri can see the difference between acknowledging a disagreement and making it a barrier to all other issues.

    @4

    Where the two countries can work together is trade, defense and cooperation against liberty and global terrorism, investments...but...fisheries? transport? Who the hell care about these issues? Only those who live in the FI....

    I thought, based on plenty of posts in this site, is that there are three parties, Argentina, the UK and the FI...Macri seems to talk about Argentina and the UK. Most probably nothing would change between Argentina and the FI in the short term. It is implied in Macri's words.

    In addition, What are you, Islanders, going to offer if you want “cooperation” in fisheries, transport, etc?..nothing is free in this World (this last is my own opinion).

    It's fortunate in particular that fish respect national boundaries and stick to their own side of the border. It simplifies fisheries management enormously.

    the simple fact is that the FI don't need Argentina for anything. Short-term or long-term.

    The simple fact is that Argentina don't need the FI for anything at all but the FI needs, or decided that needs, the Latam continent. Which country would have more influence in the region? Argntina, the UK or the FI.

    Argentina could perfectly well made the air connetcion between Punta Arenas and Port Stanley be cancelled. For political, and humanitarian, reasons the country prefer not to do that.

    You know that. So, if the FI government prefers not to offer anything new to Argentina most probably nothing, between both points, would be changed. I'm just guessing. I don't know Macri's ideas about this point.

    I hope Macri is only doing this to get loans approved. More trade with the UK would give them leverage.

    Where do you get this strange idea that the Falklands are somehow being denied the Latam continent?

    @9 pgerman

    But you are wrong (as you are so often). Argentina does need the Falkland Islands, desperately, desperately, desperately needs them.

    Why? Because the Argentines truly believe that IF, just IF they could get their thieving hands on the Falklands that ALL of their problems would disappear like magic.

    It is Argentina that is desperate, not the Falklands. Yes mutual cooperation in the preservation of fish stocks would be beneficial to BOTH Argentina and the Falklands, but the Falklands fisheries conservation has been praised, whereas your last President (the really insane one), did her best to destroy the fish stocks in the whole South Atlantic, to try and harm the Falklands. However, as usual with Argentina it was a case of cutting of your nose to spite your face, because it was Argentine fishermen who were most affected.

    The Falkland Islands also have a great relationship with countries in South and Central America. These countries can see the benefits of trading and cooperating with the Falklands. They spew a few words of insincere support to Argentina, but not one of them would back Argentina up.

    But as we've been saying for years. If Argentina's sovereignty claim is so solid, why won't they take it to the ONLY body in the WHOLE world that can order a sovereignty change? Only the ICJ can do this, yet Argentina has consistently avoided it like the plague. Instead you whinge, cry, crawl and beg to anyone who will listen. It's embarrassing. Very embarrassing for a supposed democracy to act in this manner.

    So either put your money where your mouth is and call, or fold your cards and accept that you have never had a case, and never will.

    Maybe once this is done, Argentina can grow up and move on, even become a successful country.

    I'm not going to hold my breath though.

    Since when do the FI need Argentina ? They've done pretty well without them, thank you - since 1982. And allow me to remind you, Argentina is far from being the LatAm continent. The rest of it - at least the part that counts - has no beef with the UK or the FI.
    Regarding flights, these can be chopped and changed, as necessary......or do you think they are carved in stone ?
    Your statement “Argentina don't need the FI for anything at all” makes my point. Insisting is rather stupid. When will the Argies realize that what they want and what they can have are two totally different things ? History and 1982 have taken care of that.

    I bet he does, somewhat of a coincidence coming days after that lunatic Jeremy Corbyn stated he wanted to hand back the Falklands. ;-)

    When thinking of obstacles to friendly relations between Argentina and the UK one has only to read the stupid comments of pgerman and other trolls here. He is a self confessed racist and hypocrite. He lives in Canada, not in Argentina, wrapping himself in the safety and wealth of a Commonwealth country. Halfwits like him are Mr Macris problem. He cant see that years of Peronism have ruined his country. But, Macri is no fool he needs friends in the City of London and for that reason he will visit the UK very soon and hopefully meet representatives from the islands too.

    I don't remember having insult you...did I? Ok, don't worry I know that being balanced and moderated is not something that helps you to get friends. Stupid people tend to love hard posts and comments.

    It might be the time to go to a pub and drink cheap alcohol until getting some extra courage to keep with your patetic life....it might help you to feel confortable too.

    @11, 12, 13 and 14

    Ok them. If everything is perfect for Falklands islanders I don't see the point of complaining for any argentine attitudes. Nothing needs to be changed by Macri so, nothing will change. Everything is prefect in the South Atlancit Ocean. It is a perfect, peaceful and friendly world...excelent !!!

    @16 pgerman

    The Falkland Islanders and the UK would be quite happy never to hear from Argentina EVER again. But it is Argentina that can't keep its mouth shut.

    It is Argentina that continuously embarrasses itself on the world stage. It is Argentina that constantly lies about its sovereignty claim and history.

    All the Falkland Islanders and the UK do is counter Argentine lies with the truth. And that is what YOU can't stand. That is what YOU don't like.

    And that is why, when you comment on these kinds of threads, sooner or later you start your faux 'outrage' on behalf of the British taxpayer regarding the defence of the Falklands.

    Tell me, pgerman, if Argentina's intentions are so peaceful why are they (and you) so desperate for the British to remove their defences? The British defence of the Falklands in NO WAY threatens Argentina at all. So why all the fake concern about the money being spent, and the constant lies told by the Argentine government?

    Lies such as:

    The UK has placed nuclear weapons on the Falklands!
    The UK has nuclear armed submarines off the Argentine coast!
    The Falklands are the largest NATO base in the world!

    These statements that are so easily disproved make Argentina the laughing stock of the world. Just like Timerman's assertion before the UNSC that the UK's Type 45 destroyers where akin to the Death Star! And how can 1,200 military personnel and short range surface to air missiles be a threat to Argentina?

    Oh yes Argentina needs the UK. 12 years of Kirchner rule has destroyed Argentina's economy. Macri will be heading to the UK, US and others to try and get them to support loans for Argentina.

    Difficult to do with all the hate spewed by your idol CFK, so Macri is desperate to change things.

    But it won't affect you as you don't have to live with the consequences of living in Argentina following Kirchner's rape of the country, do you? You just cheer people like her on from the side lines whilst children starve to death.

    Of course everything isn't perfect in the South Atlantic. Not when you've got a petulant, aggressive, hostile neighbour with a history of violence. But you seem to be having some difficulty with the concept of cost/benefit. The fact is that the cost of meeting Argentina's demands vastly exceeds any benefits that might accrue. Under these conditions, the status quo isn't perfect, but it's the best of all possible worlds.

    As Isolde says, I hope this helps.

    Pgerman, this morning I visited the Charles Dickens Museum, this afternoon I went to the National Theatre to see As you like it and tbis evening I enjoyed a nice Italian Meal in Soho. I dont need to go to a pub. You are a noxious hypocrite, you rail about your wonderful country, but dont live there and suffer like the millions of poor, the cartoneros, the residents of the villas. You and your kind try to intimidate the long term inhabitants of some peaceful South Atlantic Islands. You are a disgrace to your country.

    Haven't read all the comments yet, but sod off, Macri.

    I have this wonderful idea where British combat aircraft bomb and missile argieland.
    And British submarines missile argieland.

    Try this new era. Piss off.
