United States hedge fund billionaire Paul Singer is a big fan of Argentina’s new president. For one thing, Mauricio Macri doesn’t call him a “vulture lord” or a “bloodsucker,” as his predecessor Cristina Fernández did. More important, the newly elected Macri recently paid Singer’s firm US$2.28 billion in debt. Read full article

I think there's something mentally wrong with most of the population in Argentina.

Apr 22nd, 2016 - 11:24 am - Link - Report abuse 0Argy goods are too expensive and shoddy.
Their cost of labor is too high, they have too many crazy regulations and their taxes are too high.
Until they get all of that fixed they can not and will not have a recovery.
I don't think Singer paid Macri a cent. Any evidence? The bond sale was strongly over subscribed indicating a positive outlook for the economic development of Arg via increased international investment. This would improve the lives of the citizenry.
Apr 22nd, 2016 - 11:37 am - Link - Report abuse 0Seems right wing is now exclusively defined by social issues e.g. gay marriage, abortion, drug legalization, to the total exclusion of economic policy. Doesn't economic policy matter anymore? What about Macri's economic policies designed to improve the lives of the citizenry? How does one measure the right wingedness of such economic policy and where is Macri on that? Is paying legal obligations right wing?
p.s. If requiring protestors to get court permission before blocking highways and access to airports (like in most civilized nations) is right wing, then count me in as a right winger.
p.p.s. Aren't massive, crippling restrictions on imports right wing? Wouldn't eliminating them be the opposite?
p.p.p.s Is establishing nepotism ala Campora not right wing?
p.p.p.p.s. Is not artificially maintaining a black market in the currency right wing and wouldn't eliminating it be the opposite?
p.p.p.p.p.s. Is an executive branch of government that seeks excessive control over the judiciary and media not right wing?
Do Macri's critics really want a continuation of the failed policies of the K regime?

Apr 22nd, 2016 - 12:55 pm - Link - Report abuse 0Argentina's best time financially...
Here comes the champion of military coups and the killing of opposing citizens.
The origin of the monstrous debt that led to the default in 2001 happened precisely during the dictatorship that started in 1976 and ended in 1983. Oh, and the assumption by the state of the private corporations' debt also happened during that time.
Only admires of brute force can still praise the military coups. Shame on this shady YB character.

Good opinion article in Clarin today, though the choripaneros are convinced that Clarin slavishly supports anything that Macri says or does. Essentially the theme is this: the end of the default is the beginning of a financial bubble that the Macri government is promoting, with dubious promises of foreign investment and other manna from heaven. Those feel-good speeches are for consumption by those foreigners who don't know better. That with this end to the default the government has no solution for the truly greater problems of an economy in deep recession, rocketing levels of unemployment, and rapidly increasing prices. That investment is stymied while lending rates here are about 38 percent annually. That this new government shows no coherent fiscal and monetary plan. That we are looking at 5 percent inflation just for the month of April. That the government is (hopelessly but desperately) counting on Argentines going to the dollars to the tune of US$6 billion that they have in their mattresses, which Argentines everywhere know very well are better off staying in those mattresses.

Apr 25th, 2016 - 12:41 pm - Link - Report abuse 0 On Friday, Argentina paid all of the holdout creditors who had agreed to deals — a total of $9.3 billion, the economy ministry said. Elliott received $2.4 billion, a 392 percent return on the original value of the bonds, according to the ministry.
Several years late and some dollars short, but still a little shy of the 1600 percent that Kicillof and CFK were telling anyone who would pretend to listen.

It was a pain in the ass when they started it because the US airlines was clueless of what it looked like and if you did not have it, you could not board the jet in the USA.
