Sadiq Khan, the son of a bus driver, became London's first Muslim mayor on Saturday, despite a Conservative challenger who attempted to link him to extremism and securing a much-needed win for his opposition Labour Party. Khan's victory, which also makes him the first Muslim to head a major Western capital, was confirmed shortly after midnight following a day of mixed news for Labour in elections elsewhere in the United Kingdom. May 07th, 2016 - 11:39 am - Link - Report abuse 0YOu may not be entirely familiar with the concept as you are the sons and daughters of illegally squatting southern european rapists and murders... refusing to give the lands back to their rightful owners... and forcing them into praying to a big beardy man who lives in the clouds and has had his best and filthy rich fiend in a luxury compound in Italy for a couple of millennia whilst millions died for him.
Hows that for Irony eh?
@2 showing off his religious bigotry and racist credentials . Marcos the bigot will be along soon. We are greasing tbe spits and stoking up the coals for both of them when they arrive quite soon.

May 07th, 2016 - 02:18 pm - Link - Report abuse 0According to the Brazilian census of 2010[15] there were 35,167 Muslims living in the country, primarily concentrated in the states of São Paulo and Paraná, compared to 22,450 Muslims in 1990 and 27,239 in 2000.[16] There are significant Muslim communities in the industrial suburbs of the city of São Paulo and in the port city of Santos, as well as in smaller communities in Paraná State in the coastal region and in Curitiba and Foz do Iguaçu in the Argentina-Brazil-Paraguay triborder area. The community is overwhelmingly Sunni; the Sunnis are almost completely assimilated into broader society. The recent Shi'ite immigrants gravitate to small insular communities in São Paulo, Curitiba, and Foz do Iguaçu.
A recent trend has been the increase in conversions to Islam among non-Arab citizens.[17] A recent Muslim source estimated that there are close to 10,000 Muslim converts living in Brazil.[13] During the past 30 years, Islam has become increasingly noticeable in Brazilian society by building not only mosques, but also libraries, arts centres, and schools and also by funding newspapers.[18] The growth of Islam within Brazil is demonstrated in the fact that 2 of the 3 existing Portuguese translations of the Qur'an were created by Muslim translators in São Paulo.[13]
You have had muslims in Brazil since probably since the mid 1500's when the Portugese were importing african slaves :-) ever heard of the Malê Revolt? The São Paulo city council even has a Muslim Councillor by the name of Mohammad Murad, he was a lawyer I believe. You also have mosques all over the place :-)
Fews!

May 08th, 2016 - 04:14 pm - Link - Report abuse 0That there are Muslims in Brazil is nothing new ; Their largest concentration is in the region of the triple frontier, between Brazil, Argentina and Paraguay, where their presence is considered a national security issue, due to potential terrorist activity. This risk has increased over the last 10 years, thanks to the lax immigration policies implemented by the PT.
According to the 2010 census, there were roughly 35,000 Muslims who followed the faith, so percentage wise, they are less than 0,0002 of the total population, which is irrelevant ; however, Islamic organizations estimate they are more than 1 million......whichever extreme is more accurate, the fact remains that those in São Paulo are pretty well integrated into the Brazilian way of life.
You also have mosques all over the place.....not really - there are reported to be 30 in São Paulo, and another 70 around the rest of Brazil..
But they have nothing to do with the recently-elected mayor of London, so what's your point ?
Companheiro Brasilero gave MP commentators an opportunity to totally avoid saying anything about the topic of the story above.
May 08th, 2016 - 10:30 pm - Link - Report abuse 0For climate change deniers, free-market, small government partisans such as many in this forum, Sadiq Khan's victory must be a nightmare and a sign their world is crumbling.
That's what happens when you stay in your ivory tower, nursing your old prejudices while the world is changing all around--and one day wakes you up with a slap on the face.

May 09th, 2016 - 02:48 pm - Link - Report abuse 0Your comment is as stupid as the Brasshole's, but being birds of a feather...
Your use of Companheiro proves it .....
Ryr That's what happens when you stay in your ivory tower.....
You must be the blind, idiotic type that believes that by 'loving' the Muslims, they will love you back......when they invade your neighbourhood, demanding Islamic schools, that dozens of mosques be built, and start to balk about your customs, I suppose you'll be ready for that slap on the face before they make you bend over ?
Just to put some light on the actual subject:
May 10th, 2016 - 04:57 pm - Link - Report abuse 0There are many areas of London life that are affected by the work of the Mayor of London and the London Assembly, such as policing, transport, housing, planning and the environment. The Mayor plays a key role by putting together plans and policies and running and funding projects. Before finalising his or her major strategies the Mayor must consult with Londoners and their elected representatives on the London Assembly.
So, don't panic Mr. Mannering!
This is just Democracy in Action, London has spoken, after a robust debate.
His religion is not an issue, his policies are. If he fails to prove to be a good Mayor for all London, I do not doubt that Londoners will be slow to show their displeasure and boot him out.
(PS: Khan was inaugurated in the Christian SouthWark Cathedral and the next-day attended a Jewish Holocaust Memorial.)
