Malcorra/Hammond meet in London: Falklands and confidence building mechanisms in a long agenda
Argentina's foreign minister Susana Malcorra will be in London this Thursday to attend a global summit on combating corruption, and is expected to meet with her peer Philip Hammond, and probably address the Falklands issue, according to Argentine official sources. Malcorra is accompanied by Fulvio Pompeo, Secretary for Strategic Affairs from Argentina's presidency, and a very close advisor to president Mauricio Macri. Read full article

May 12th, 2016 - 06:25 am - Link - Report abuse 0The latter is more accurate I would suggest. There is nothing to suggest that the brake will be released - quite the contrary as the current British Government has continually reinforced its support for the Islanders and their right to decide.
A Presidency with a begging bowl for more cash does seem to amount to much of a change.
What Malcorra tells the Argentine people is unlikely to be anything more than the platitudes that are expected in the south cone. Platitudes for the masses.
Malcorra may mention the islands, Hammond will cough and ignore the comment, and then they'll get on with the real business.
The matter is settled.
The UK has made a commitment. No discussions or negotiations about sovereignty without the express agreement of the Falkland Islands. Cameron and Hammond should be very careful. That commitment is very important to a large proportion of the British population and electorate.

Should make that item on Malcorra's agenda very short.
Pompey is going along to make sure she says very little about the Falklands and uses the begging techniques of an aggressive Romainian. Macri realises that the Falklands are totally insignificant compared with the other problems facing Argentina and Britain can be more help than most other countries in the world. Macri has also sent them to China to find out how big the hole is that CFK has dug for them. Argentina’s greatest problem is that they have been totally stitched up by China .Most Argentinian's have no idea !

Slight problem Malcorra. FI don't need Argentine airlinks-no longer a runway at Stanley that was limited to a certain range of aircraft (against Shackleton's recommendations) , now there is MPA.
Fuel supplies? Already got them.
White card to get into Argentina?
Don't need it-MPA has opened the world to the Islanders.
But perhaps some form of cooperation is on the cards, perhaps a willingness for Argentine politicians to pay a friendly visit to Stanley and recognise the Islanders exist.
Maybe an apology for the Argentine's abuse of the Islanders in 1982?

The Zona Franca in Punta Arenas, Chile, is gearing up for an increase in sales to and from the Falklands. Apparently the FI government accepts Chilean fruit and vegetable sanitary conditions without further inspection and qualification. And vehicles such as Land Rovers, well used but serviceable, are being sent from the Falklands for sale in Chile via the Zona Franca. Chilenos in that region pay only about 1.5% on the CIF amount which is better than the apprx 25% that must be paid outside of the Zonas Francas. Used vehicle refurb in Punta Arenas via low-tax import of Rover parts.

Produce is then checked on arrival Falklands but we know that most products just need a brief visual check as SAG standards are very high.
Argentine produce on the other hand can never arrive here via RioGallegos Lan once a month,simply because the Arg Govt would not allow it,s Agricultural Dept to supply the normal standard International Biosecurity Certificate - that would mean them admitting the produce is going to a foreign country!!

it is reported in the papers and TV that Argentina will try again and Spain will invade if we leave,
all a load of rubbish,
If we stay, it may well be true,
but leave and we can invest in our military to defend British interests not European ambitions.

farage will go first for 1/2 hour then Cameron but they will not face each other,
notice how the remain have been very quiet abt this so called European deal and Britain's special treatment,
apparently according to the news, this treaty has not been mentioned once since the official campaign started??
