Falkland Islanders are very satisfied with the Chile links and health services in Santiago, was the first reply to media speculations in the Buenos Aires media regarding possible changes in the Argentine government attitude and policies towards the disputed Falklands. Read full article

Chile has long (and friendly) links with the Falklands. Many of the people living in Punta Arenas can trace their lineage to islanders. The sheep industry in southern Chile that provided meat and wool to the UK was started with Falkland sheep. There is a new regional hospital in Punta Arenas that is available for treating the islanders, who also receive significant low-tax advantages (paying no IVA) in the Punta Arenas zona franca.
May 26th, 2016 - 02:02 pm - Link - Report abuse 0Argentina really doesn't have much to offer the islanders except grief and an occasional visit by Natasha Niebieskikwiat .
Come to think of it, the development of southern Argentina was also due to the sheep industry that was introduced and developed by the Falkland islanders who came to Argentina and made it productive.
I have always thought by reading the media, basically based on what the islanders and the British Foreign Office said, that there is an economic, and diplomatic, argentine blockade that damaged the islanders and make them angry. Noone can blame on Argentina about the islanders's decisions...
May 26th, 2016 - 02:12 pm - Link - Report abuse 0I have always said that argentine moderate positions would denude the extreme positions on the islands. Nothing better than extreme positions in Argentina to justify extreme postures in the Islands and the United Kingdom. They are both of the very same kind. They need each other.
Ignoring the islanders and the islands might and acting as if they don't exist be the best solution for Argentina.
3 - Yes - and that means Macri can follow in footsteps of Christina- living in fantasy land - spouting bullshit - getting nowhere - and meanwhile the Falklands carry on with no real problem - I agree - both sides happy!

Pgerman, at least the Islanders have a reason to have an extreme position unlike Argentina. You make out it's the Islanders that have caused the whole issue, did you forget they were invaded. Typical twisting of facts. Give it a couple of generation where Argentina have dropped their puerile claim and have only shown a friendly hand, demanding and expecting nothing. Then you may see the Islanders soften too.
May 27th, 2016 - 09:17 am - Link - Report abuse 0I still see you are blaming 'the others' for your problems and not taking any responsibility for your own actions.
The Islanders do not need Argentina, they have lived in peace for many, many generations until Argentina decided to invade their homes. It is Argentina that needs the extreme position to beat their chests and show how macho they are.
'Ignoring the islanders and the islands might and acting as if they don't exist be the best solution for Argentina.' I agree, the Islands have been doing it to Argentina for decades and look how well they are doing....

May 27th, 2016 - 11:44 pm - Link - Report abuse 0And yet then the British blast me for my extreme positions on Britain.
Britain is a country that has said on multiple occasions they want to conquer, or destroy, Argentina. Never has Britain backed off from those remarks. Who in their right minds would be friends with scum like that?
Not only that, Britain simply denies it has ever done anything wrong in world history, they claim they have saved the world! No slavery, no colonialism, no cultural supremacism, no wars of aggression started... Britain is a beautiful limpid lake of goodness and benevolence.
My views and attitudes towards Britain, Brittos, and Anglos are completely justified, completely expected, and completely required.
Off with you... when Britain publicly apologizes for Empire, pays its fair dues to the victims, stops engaging in COLONIALISM TODAY (Antarctica), and starts teaching proper history to it's children, then I may actually address you with a dose of respect. When you stop threatening my country with stealing our territory, particularly the land south of Mar del Plata, and threatening it with weapons, then after 3.590 years we could start considering some friendlier terms.

May 28th, 2016 - 11:16 am - Link - Report abuse 0I have always said that argentine moderate positions would denude the extreme positions on the islands.
Argentina are either aggressive to the Islanders or when'friendly' offer the Islanders what they have already.
How stupid is that?
Offering Islanders medical services is not very smart when they already have access to services in Chile.
What is the point of an islander studying at Argentine educational establishments when the Islanders can study anywhere in the world, usually the UK where the education is far superior to that available in Argentina?
Argentina will never work out in a million years that if they want to offer something to the Islanders, it has to be better than what they have already.
The question is, to you, WHY is a massive country like Argentina incapable of offering anything worthwhile to only 3000 Islanders?
If Argentina do not have cordial relations with the Islands it is Argentina that loses, not the Islanders.
What you have never had, you don't miss.
@11
JUst take care of the dying pensioners in the uk..
Time to wake up your few brain cells. The Falkland Islands Government do not have responsibility for pensioners in the UK. They are the responsibility of the UK government. And I agree that pensioners in the UK are not always as well cared for as they should. However your assertion that the FIG are to blame shows how mentally deficient you are.
The FIG are responsible for pensioners that live in the Falkland Islands , (ie. 8000 miles away from the UK).
So is there a large crisis with dying pensioners in the Falkland Islands then?
With folks like you championing the Malvinas Myth argument it's easy to see that the Islanders have nothing to fear.
@13
engaging in COLONIALISM TODAY (Antarctica
Antarctica is a separate continent to South America, so Argentina practises colonialism. If you despise the worst aspects of British Colonialism in the past then why is Argentina trying to copy it?

May 28th, 2016 - 11:16 am - Link - Report abuse 0Britain is a country that has said on multiple occasions they want to conquer, or destroy, Argentina.
[ please provide proof of this ]
Not only that, Britain simply denies it has ever done anything wrong in world history,
[ absolutely rubbish, in the last 10 years British politicians have forever apologised for the past, this is a matter of fact and public knowledge.
Britain is a beautiful limpid lake of goodness and benevolence.
[ and this is a true statement, Britain is not paradise, but a close second..
My views and attitudes towards Britain, Brittos, and Anglos are completely justified, completely expected, and completely required.
[ everyone is entitled to ones views ] but based on facts Britain is no worse than the worse, but better than most.
, stops engaging in COLONIALISM TODAY (Antarctica),
please prove this, tell us or provide links as to British colonies or territorial ambitions.
and starts teaching proper history to it's children,
[ British children are NOT brainwashed, as sadly Argentinian children are.
then I may actually address you with a dose of respect
if you ever read British history you would understand that respect is earned, and not demanded, and history Respects Great Britain, unlike some doctorial states,]
. When you stop threatening my country with stealing our territory,
[ facts= Argentina invaded an innocent unarmed and peaceful tiny islands
and ever since they got beat, Argentina has abused ,threatened and intimidated and abused the rights of the islanders, this is fact and in the public domain.
, and threatening it with weapons,
[ the British have never ever threatened Argentina with weapons since the end of the war, if you know different, then please support this with evidence.]
then after 3.590 years we could start considering some friendlier terms.
[ no terms are acceptable with an aggressive country that wishes only to destroy their way of life and their freedom to be British.
Given Argentistan's history and present policies of imperialist expansionism and armed aggression against its neighbours, there is ample cause for placing it in the category of nations that require containment, to place some limits on the aggression of this North Korea of South America.

#28 CHICKEN SUPREMO. Nick Clegg was hardly a figure of great note, even at the time (2011) when the article you linked to, was written (can't you even come up with something a bit modern than that?) To all the Argentine trolls just something for you to think about.
May 30th, 2016 - 09:10 pm - Link - Report abuse 0The Falkland Islands were British in 1690. They were British in 1746. They were British in 1810. They were British in 1832, and 1833. There were British in 1850. They were British in 1900. They were British in 1914. They were British in 1940. They were British in 1945. They were British in 1965. They were British in 1982. They were British in 1990. They were British in 2000. They were British in 2010.
They ARE British today in 2016. They will be British in 2041. They will be British in 2100, and so on and so forth.
They ONLY way that the Islands will no longer be British is when the Falkland Islanders use their self determination to decide whether they want to be British, or to become independent or to become Chilean.
I can guarantee that they won't ever be Argentine because your corrupt and benighted country will have destroyed itself long before then.
So when the FIG says the Falklands are most satisfied with Chile links and excellent health services what they are actually saying is feck off Argentina, we have never needed you, we don't need you now and we will never need you.
I wonder how long it'll be before Mr Macri realises that he can't buy the Falkland Islanders and he'll resort to normal Argentine operating procedure of crying, whining, crawling and begging any tin-pot dictatorship to come to Argentina's 'aid'?
