Muhammad Ali was a great boxer and a remarkable human being, not afraid of taking strong political stances.

And shoot them for what?, he said at the time. They never called me nigger, they never lynched me, they didn't put no dogs on me, they didn't rob me of my nationality, rape or kill my mother and father.... How can I shoot them poor people? Just take me to jail.
He paid a heavy price for his stance, being unable to fight from 1967 to 1970 and is conviction was only overturned by the U.S. Supreme Court in 1971.
His example gave the anti-war effort a significant boost, and Ali will be remembered for both his courage in the ring and also facing his country's establishment.
In the 1960s Ali was a rebel, a revolutionary. Unfortunately, since that time, his image has been whitewashed.
