Multi-millionaire members of the US Olympic basketball team have rented a massive luxury cruise ship to call their home while they compete at the Rio Olympics. Super rich members of the 'Dream Team' are shirking the nightmare of the Olympic Village, still undergoing finishing touches in some areas and likely to remain “under construction” throughout the games in others. Members of the women's team are also reported to be calling the cruise ship home. Read full article

    It would make a lot of sense to use such ships if the Olympics are held in a coastal city. Why go to the expense of a village when one of these can simply sail up for the duration.

    Silver Cloud a “massive” cruise ship? Nonsense: at roughly 16,000 tons it is one of the smallest cruise ships in the industry, but it is, like all the Silversea ships, super-luxury. By today's standards, “massive” would be something like 150,000 to 225,000 tons, carrying upwards of 5,000 passengers, more of a floating hell than super-luxury.

    @4 “.... that's the American Way....”

    I see that the Silversea company is headquartered in Monaco.

    And the inability to provide decent housing for Olympics participants is headquartered in Brazil.

    Of course, there was always that massive luxury airliner that Argentina pressed into military service in 1982.

    Mr. Idlehands;

    Good thinking on the part of the US Americans.

    They control their own hygiene, food, Security, and they take away all the stress and much of the health risks from their athletes.

    It's hardly a novel idea. It's one that's been used before, to house military and police nearby such events.

    One would have thought this would have been the back up plan for more than one team.

    Brasil could have done it themselves, but construction was to be one of the economic returns to the people.

    The writer makes much of the “luxury” of the accommodations. I can't see what the alternative would be, house ones's athletes in a sweat boat ?

    Im sure we could do much better than the Americans,

    the British team could have hired HMS Illustrious ,
    kitted it out/towed it to Brazil and bobs ya uncle,

    mmmmmmmm, as for the technical bits, just forget it.

    lol.just an idea.

    Mr. Marti;

    It's obvious from these posts that there is some back history that I am missing, but I get some of what you are saying. It's not too hard.

    However, I am somewhat baffled by our argumentative friend.

    “Yeah.....that's the American Way....
    Love it.”

    I'm not sure that I get his point. Is that praise or sarcasm?

    And, why?
    The overriding issue surrounding these games is that the Brazilians were and are unable to provide appropriate accommodation for foreign athletes, and unable to ensure they are competing and living in a healthful environment.

    The article merely states that the US team has found a suitable and clever solution, while others make do , with a sense of humour.

    The only interjection from Mr. Voice is a brief and somewhat enigmatic comment on the American team.

    Now, he is off on an irrelevant tangent.

    Good night.

    I wonder who's paying for the security? 250 officers, presumably round the clock, the cost must be staggering...If I were one of these megabuck athletes and the choice was between the Olympic Village 'accommodation' and a cruise ship gazing upon the huddles masses....I'd just stay home.

    (11) Mr. Kanye;

    It's obvious from your comment that there is a lot of “back history” that you are missing... and that you are getting zip of what is being said....

    “You are not sure” if you get Mr. Voice's crystal clear point at (4) about the “American Ways” of the American Billonaires Basketball Team, you say.... “Is that praise or sarcasm?”, you ask...

    ..........Try “Ironic Praise”, I say.............

    And, why?
    One of the overriding purpouses of the Modern Olimpic Games is to promote the human fellowship between athletes in a shared Olimpic environment...

    The article clearly states that the US Billonaires Professional Basketball Team has found a “Suitable” solution for themselves.. whilst others (rest of the Yankee Olympic Team included) may do with their sense of Olympic Spirit...

    Have a nice day...

    Apparently the accommodation, is not much, neither is the food ,

    but hey,

    Think, of all those medals , that should more than make up for lack of amenities,
    if indeed one wins any medals,

    still, is the fun that counts, so they say.

    What the article “forgets” to tell us is... that that the US Billonaires Professional Basketball Team has found a “Suitable” solution for themselves in Seoul (1988), Barcelona (1992), Atlanta (1996), Sydney (2000), Athens (2004), Beijing (2008) and London (2012)....whilst other Olympians (Yanks included) keep the Olympic Spirit high...

    Mr. Think,

    How do you do?
    I see that you and Mr. Voice have some back history, also.

    Nevertheless, t's kind of you to come to his aid.

    “One of the overriding purpouses of the Modern Olimpic Games is to promote the human fellowship between athletes in a shared Olimpic environment”

    That your response should be so naive, is ironic.

    Everyone knows the overriding purpose of the Modern Olympic Games is to make oodles of dough for the IOC.

    Rest well, don't give the plight of the athletes another thought.

    #18 NBA players are now billionaires?.....athletes make a lot but suffice it to say that they are not billionaires.

    I think the Olympics proved this year that they are beyond corrupt, are a waste of economic resources and it they must continue.......stay out of 3rd and 4th world countries. Thank Boston decided not to bid future games......

    Are the Brazilian police still welcoming people at the airport with signs....“Welcome to Hell”?

    Michael Jordan is no longer an athlete, unless I've been in a cave longer than I thought I was. And, I believe my statement was “NBA PLAYERS are now billionaires?”.

    a million seconds is 12 days

    a billion seconds is (almost)32 years

    A big difference of billions from millions......former and active too. But, at the end of the day, bball sucks as a sport......in my opinion. Like futbol, watching the last 5 minutes of the game you see the entire game.

    Hey, did you watch Messi in the COPA games live? I did. I never knew RG's tailgated in parking lots for futbol games.

    Well it stands to reason that you would assume such. Most people who make (such as yourself) baseless decisions without any facts or information are more often wrong in their thinking and erroneous assumptions, as that one you posted on.

    Now, along those line you should be able to tell me my favorite foods and drinks and vacation spots, considering that you have no information on that as well. You know think, I may have to return to calling you stink because Think is far too flattering for you after that. You obvious have an ego issue because I pointed out that basketball players and millionaires and not billionaires. You seem to have something in common with Trump......the inability to say....“.I stand corrected and walk away.”

    I did ride motocross on an Ossa 250 as a kid, does that count? No wonder I was what I was in thew Army.

    BTW.....if your memory serves you, I've stated many times my favorite sport during the yankee boy years when his operator was allowing him out of the closet. When do you THINK he will return?...or has he?
