Members of the Australian Olympic team were robbed during a fire evacuation at the Rio de Janeiro Olympic Village, in the latest of a series of complaints about the athletes’ housing complex. The Australian building was evacuated Friday after a fire in the basement, which was likely started by a cigarette. Read full article

Aug 16th, 2016 - 10:59 pm - Link - Report abuse 0I thought that such things only happen in Argentina.
Aug 17th, 2016 - 12:21 am - Link - Report abuse 0The Australian team is obviously being targeted for all the public whinging they did early on.

There is not one post and not one thread (argentina related or not), where you cannot refrain yourself from writing the magic word. It is a physiological compulsion. It must be deep, the scar.
Oi Nostril, what does your alter ego Brarsehole have to say about such crimes. Something like - Well, tbe Argie team are next door, what do you expect? Or, it wasnt us guvnor!
Aug 17th, 2016 - 08:42 am - Link - Report abuse 0Everyday there are multiple clips of athletes being robbed. Not just on the streets but also by the Brazilians working in Olympic village!!
Aug 17th, 2016 - 10:31 am - Link - Report abuse 0But I think that the green, algae pool water for water polo was my favorite story. The one the swimmers complained that smelled like farts!!
lol
My father was in the Sydney Olympics and much before in the Olympics in Atlanta.
Aug 17th, 2016 - 01:20 pm - Link - Report abuse 0In his opinion the Olympics in Rio are the most organized, cheerful and fun.
And yet there was no terrorist act or even theft or aggressiveness.

Brasshole is so funny. But he was funnier when he was writing speeches for CFK and Kim Jong-il.

Aug 17th, 2016 - 02:12 pm - Link - Report abuse 0You lie! You are not trustworthy people.
And now? Police forbidden from leaving the country these athletes.
@3 Comment on high probability of such robberies being done in Argentina was based on the rather well known and perhaps indisputable ranking of Argentina having the highest rate of robbery in the Western Hemisphere, something CFK can be proud of.
Aug 17th, 2016 - 04:07 pm - Link - Report abuse 0Míralo y llora.
So Buenos Aires province has about double the murder rate compared to the US? No surprises there. And that's the rate that Kirchnerism would admit to, so it's probably much worse.

Aug 17th, 2016 - 05:59 pm - Link - Report abuse 0@13. Not surprising. There are a lot of bad Argie actors. Both homicides and robberies went up enormously under the Kirchners.
Aug 17th, 2016 - 06:34 pm - Link - Report abuse 0Also not surprising is the high robbery rate in Chile. Supposedly the second highest in South America.
Right after Argentina, of course.
Aparently the police want to talk to the American men who claimed they were robbed and told not to leave Brazil,
Aug 17th, 2016 - 07:01 pm - Link - Report abuse 0the Americans have already left, apparently the police say their statements don't add up,
it seems quite a few athletes and officials and members of the public have seen first hand of being in the wrong place, at the wrong time,
don't know if this is true,
From what I read here, the American swimmers were detained after getting aboard their plane to leave, basically yanked off the plane (no pun intended, eh?). And the Brazilians aren't allowing the swimmers access to US diplomatic personnel. Or so goes the story.
Aug 18th, 2016 - 03:57 am - Link - Report abuse 03# The Australian team is obviously being targeted for all the public whinging they did early on.
Aug 18th, 2016 - 06:54 am - Link - Report abuse 0The 'whinging' that you refer to was a legitimate complaint about the low standard of accommodation afforded by the host nation (Brazil) and the safety of the athletes. Water leaking from electrical fittings and the fire (but no alarm) confirmed that these concerns were well founded.
But according to your comment it is ok to rob people if they complain!
You Latin Americans certainly live by some strange standards.
According to sky new, just now,
Aug 18th, 2016 - 12:47 pm - Link - Report abuse 0a British athlete was robbed at gun point, is in a terrible state but otherwise unhurt,
dangerous in brazil it seems.
I have no idea why First World countries even sent their people into what could be considered a warzone compared with what they live in usually.
Aug 18th, 2016 - 07:23 pm - Link - Report abuse 0Seems the 'Drug Lords' of the favelas have carried out what they said they would do well before the Olympics started.
Brazil, such a shame.
It's been a great games. Fantastic scenery, excellent facilities and GB has won loads of gold. Shame it ends at the weekend.

Has any other Olympics in the past, ever had these safety problems,
Aug 19th, 2016 - 06:53 pm - Link - Report abuse 0I don't remember it happening before.
Reporting in the UK has been largely positive helped by all the medals of course. But the empty seats and today's news about the Paralympics is something that a PC press cannot explain away. The Brazilian women's beach volleyball was played in front of a half empty stadium and the BBC explained that this was because the locals don't come out until later in the evening. But if Brazilians couldn't even be bothered to show up for their own country playing in their own sport then that probably explains why most venues have been almost completely empty. And the betrayal of the Paralympians if it happens is absolutely disgraceful. If Rio messes this up as looks like is happening then it will be hard to take South America seriously again for major events. They should not have gone for these games until they were in a position to host them. I wanted these games to be good, I thought the very opening sequence of the opening ceremony looked good and then it quickly deteriorated and ended up quite embarassing. The road race for the cycling was a disgrace, I thought the Dutch rider had broken her back when she fell - though no-one would have known as no-one could be bothered to stand on their own doorstep and watch it. The BBC can make excuses for poor ticket sales but watching the road races is free so where is everyone?
Aug 19th, 2016 - 08:47 pm - Link - Report abuse 0A good point.
Aug 20th, 2016 - 07:09 pm - Link - Report abuse 0So, what is it about you Brits. Do you have 'sucker' written all over your face? Well, you do and that makes you likely candidates for muggers.

Wouldn't be nice to see some comments from the above writers who jumped to quick conclusions?
